i don't usually care if bands get big unless they pull an anti-flag / rise against / against me and go back on the words they speak / "live by." i'm sure gaslight'll be huge and they deserve it. although i still see no point in signing to a major label in this day and age.

yeah Gaslight aren't political and that is why there won't be the same level of backlash as there was for AM!, AM! got backlash for every rung they climbed (I'm not saying they should have gotten that backlash.). As long as a band writes great songs that is all I can ask for as a listener, for me AM!'s latest offering didn't produce that, although i still think they have great stuff in them. Gaslight has given no sign of writing not-great songs.

completely agree. I don't blame bands like AM! really, everyone is entitled to change their mind and alter their position, but expect the people you've left behind to get pissed when you do (again, totally understandable).

It seems to me like they would have more than one record contract with Sideonedummy, so I don't think they will be on a major a year from now, unless they pull an Offspring.

Also, bands like Gogol Bordello have succeeded in becoming pretty huge on Sideonedummy (ie selling out a 2000 person venue in Edmonton this October), no reason Gaslight can't rock that shit too.

Fuck that! The day they sign to a major will be the day I start shooting up my university while screaming it was all because of Gaslight Anthem signing to a major.

It can be interactive, you can decide whether or not I shoot myself at the end of the day by whether or not you continue to support them.

i hope they get the recognition for writing such good music. the way i look at it, id rather they make the money than some idiots writing terrible terrible so called music and make milliions off it. right now all thats mainstream is horrible.

Yeah, dude. Insisting on not listening to music is what being a music fan is all about.

the Killers second album was influenced by Bruce, Gaslight Anthem are influenced by Bruce, I don't think they sound like each other.

I don't think HWM's later work is that far removed from Gaslight's first album in parts but overall not really, although i would say the Draft work in similar territory.

Here's my take.

1. Vaguely poppy through off sounding riffs and mid tempo beats.
2. Polished enough to comfort the listener to ensure him he's not listening to Discharge, but just trashy enough to sound good on vinyl.
3. A mid-pitched whiney voice, like a punk-pop singer who grew testicles.
4. Neutral fashion sense. (which to me is still a statement)
5. Group comprised mainly of people who may act like "musicians", like people who talk about gear non-stop, which is a few notches below film-student.

Probably more, but literally, I need to go get a sandwich.

I needed the PS. Yeah, I know The Man will try to push them on everyone, and maybe everyone will like them. It's certainly possible, but I see them fitting in more with an older audience than someone that asks their parents for a ride to the Alternative Press tour.

i completely agree. i was really surprised that kerrang went with them - and according the GAs myspace gave them a stella review - as I think the chances of my parents liking them are much higher than a 16 year old.

i don't know. people that like paramore like paramore because MTV and AP.net and MySpace tell them to. that could just as easily happen to The Gaslight Anthem, whose music is incredibly accessible and poppy.

also, adults tend to shy away from stuff this close to being corny. i really like this band, a lot, but they are dangerously close to being corny.

I took that into consideration. Maybe I'm giving kids too much credit, but I'd hope that old-fashioned rock music would not appeal to them just because they were on MySpace. Also, to combat that, if their parents like it first, then there is no way the kids will like it.

My dad thinks they are boring, but my mom oddly likes them.
Not enough to buy or even show any further intrest seeing as for some odd reason she just doesn't listen to music.

that song single handedly changed my opinion of flashlight batman. when the hype started i gave them a listen and hated it...but after hearing some of 59 sound, and then finally miles davis and the cool...giant boner.

i still don't like sink or swim, though...it's got the "end of the century" thing working against it...the material's there and it's solid...but something REALLY got lost in the recording...

Yeah I'm pretty sure the Richmond show at the Canal Club will be the last non-barrier small stage show I ever see them at.

I say good for them. They've earned it.

Don't listen to bands that feed into MTV2 rotation. Seek out different genres and labels.

i actually don't think they will blow up that big for a while if they do at all. i think it will be more like the hold steady, they'll move up to mid-size venues but they won't be playing theatres at leats not for a few more albums.

I'm going to two of their shows this week in London...I wonder how much of a UK fanbase they have at this point. I'm hoping (perhaps naively) for smallish shows.

I'm seeing them next month at a place called Rock Botton Tattoo Bar in San Antonio. I've never been there, but it sounds small. Anyone been there?

I'm still kicking myself for missing them a the Zombie Lounge in San Diego last summer. The room is about the size of an average living room... and it was 3 blocks from my apartment (and I think they were playing with Cobra Skulls). I'm a douche.

First time I saw them was at Monkey Wrench Books in Austin, like me and maybe 20 - 35 people were there (including other bands) if I remember correctly. Wonder if they'd be able to do anything like that again.

As much as I love the band, and all the guys, Alex included, I cannot stand his playing. He is the weak point in the band.

it's decent. it's slow and quiet and really seems to be a better album-ender than backseat.

as for being worth the purchase, it's a fuckin' dollar man..

while i'm not exactly an expert on itunes store it does tell me that it is only available if I buy the whole album (which for someone in the UK is like $20). I'm pretty tight, but not that tight.

NO! For hardcore fans, you need to get it. But I didn't know it was a bonus, and I seriously was thinking "This is the closing track??" The Backseat is a much better album closer.

exact same thing happened to me today. nearly bought "stink" by the replacements instead, but i got distracted by a lady-friend...

Change of plans. My local record store amazingly had it against all odds, so I picked it up today. Haven't gotten to listen whole way through yet, later tonight. I only listened to 2 songs until today.

Pretty good turns in Good, Good turns into fantastic.

"The Patient Ferris Wheel," with "Film Noir," "Here's Looking at You, Kid" and "Meet Me By the River's Edge" close behind.

I actually found serious will-power and held out from listening to the album until last night because it is such a big deal for me, so it's a little early to tell favorites... but the double-shot of "Meet Me By the River's Edge" and "Here's Looking At You, Kid" hit me like a train last night.

P.S. I got the album at the record release show in New York on Saturday night and held out from listening until Monday night because that was the first chance I had to really sit down by myself with no distractions and do nothing but just listen. Sometimes I think I'm too anal about stuff like that. In any event, the show kicked ass, and The '59 Sound is already a very important album in my life. At first listen, it's absolutely flawless.

I'm exactly the same as far as wanting to actually *listen* the first N times through album I expect to care about. I've been working ridiculous hours for longer than I care to remember, and just haven't been able to devote the attention I wanted to to this album and have therefore been holding off. Now it's on about its fifth spin, and...daaaaamn.

First impression: After all the chatter on this site, I've really been dreading the reverb vocals and girding myself for a letdown. Actually, though, I love it! I think it totally works in this context, and I'm glad they tried it.

I had heard "Great Expectations" and "The '59 Sound" pretty long before I heard the rest of the album so I actually knew going in that I liked the reverb vocals. And after hearing the rest of the album, I absolutely love it too! I don't know why everyone has such a problem with it. This album is not Sink or Swim. That effect wouldn't have worked on Sink or Swim, but it fits perfectly with the theme and Brian's lyrics on this one. You can tell they just wanted a really classic-sounding, soulful record and that e

I don't blame you! I downloaded it a long time ago and somehow held off... Believe me though, I put it on a few times and wanted to keep it going so badly... then halfway through the first song I just closed the laptop and walked away haha It was NOT easy.

I like "film noir" alot...

You know what, "The Backseat" is one of the greatest album closers I've ever heard so that's up there too. Fuck it, this record is just too amazing to pick favorites.
