Slipknot frontman blames labels for file sharing

Slipknot vocalist and frontman Corey Taylor has laid the blame for the explosion of file sharing on record labels rather than the file sharers themselves according to this Kerrang article.

Why would you blame (people who download music)? Half the fucking albums that are out there are shit. I don't download, but at the same time, I don't buy new music 'cause it all sucks. Okay, there's a handful of bands that I buy, but other than that, I just buy old shitt because old shit is good.

I think it's the quality of the product. If record companies would stop giving any fucking mook (idiot) on the street with a fringe a record deal or their own record label, maybe you would sell more fucking albums, dipshits.

Well, I'm listening to the new D4 right now. Heh. I am going to buy both the CD and the 12" when they come out though. I guess as long as people try to support the band somehow, I don't care if they hear the album early, because lets face it, record labels adhering to the wishes of distributors take way, way too long to get music into peoples hands. I don't appreciate the blatant spreading of the music once it is pirated, but I love when people are like, "hey, I just heard this awesome band, here is a CD, let me know what you think." As far as the bands I play in go, I would love to have our music spread around like that, but I doubt it would be as big a deal with us. Illegal downloading has not affected me in the slightest yet and on my level I think it would only help. On a side note, I just released an awesome split 7" with Sleeper Horse and Echoes of Harpe

i've been a street team kid for ritual detroit, i ran that street team, worked the door for st andrews, paid bands at venues around detroit for ritual, did the marketing for all the venues under 1500 capacity and now i'm a barback at st andrews

in that time somewhere i also booked a couple shows, helped some other smaller promoters out and used to place local bands on shows

also i guess i should say ritual was bought by sfx, which was bought by clear channel which spun live nation out of itself so i worked for clear channel and live nation for most of my time in the music business. for a while they let us use the ritaal name again which was probably my favorite time working for the company because they weren't pushing for every city to be exactly the same.

I can't say I enjoy his music at all, but he is absolutely 100% correct. I am a music junky, and miss the days of buying handfuls of great CDs by new artists, but those days are over. Music today sucks, but you can't be too disappointed if you get the album for free.

...it depends on what you're listening to and where you're looking. I'm sure Slipknot Guy's favorite music probably does suck these days so he sticks to the old. But I find new bands/music every day that is great, that I buy. This rant only makes sense in the context of shallow musical taste.

Well obviously there is always going to be some bands out there making good music, but as far as main stream music goes, there is really nothing out there of substance for the most part. It's all pop. The rap, the rock, the metal, the punk, all sounds exactly the same to me, all terrible. I am not shallow at all. I am very open minded when it comes to music. I don't know anyone that has half the CD collection I do. I am a music junky. I probably enjoy a lot of the same bands you guys do, but you honestly don't think the music industry is stale of late? I wish you were right.

i think that's partly true. what baffles me is how this guy can say this and not think that he is polluting contemporary music with his own music. the selling points of his band are that they wear masks and have drums that you can walk on. i don't think anyone even mentioned this on this forum. it's like we all just accept the fact that he makes okay music and can actually preach about all the shitty music out there....amazing.

I think what he's trying to say is that bands that put almost no work into their art and just walk around thinking they're the shit because their voice was auto-tuned into radio rock are getting picked up within months of starting their bands. At least Slipknot had a fanbase before they ever got signed, and they worked hard to get it.

what a terrible attitude for a multi-millionaire to have towards new music. I'm just so tired of everyone saying "oh music today is terrible" or "the scene today sucks" or "i only listen to old bands cause new bands have no idea what its like to be punk". If you are not happy with what your listening to then that's your problem..maybe you should branch out from the same boring 3 chord punk rock you've been listening to since 95. There's great artist and bands out there, maybe you just have to put a little time and effort into finding them.

Mainstream music today does suck, no question about it. Yes, Slipknot is very much a part of the problem, but why not take the money from all the idiots that dont realize it. His music sucks, but he is right when he says today's music sucks. Overall, I'd say the last 10 years or so has been one of the weakest eras of music as far as originality goes.

Originality can't be measured by only "the mainstream" though. Mainstream 80's music (in my opinion) was terrible, but the underground culture created Minor Threat and The Dead Kennedys.

Yeah I agree, but I think the mainstream is what he was talking about. The 80's was dry compared to the 70's, but some of my favorite bands came from that time. GNR, Metallica, Megadeth, AIC...Some of them niche bands I guess, but when was the last time a band had the impact GNR had. I'd say they were the last true rock n roll band. I have a ton of CDs since then that I enjoy, mostly indie I guess, but I've been waiting a long time for a rock n roll album.

i think what hes trying to say is that mainstreem music sucks and its the major labels fault that there losing money you know i actully really liked the first to slipknot albums when i was a teenager they were pretty consistent in what they were it wasnt like 4 songs that could possibly be singles and then a buch of filler put on there just to get the record out i think thats what the problem with mainstreem music is today even if there is a band who has a good song on the radio which is rare most of the rest of the record sounds like it has no effort put into it what so ever if your on a major you dont hafta write a good record any more you can write one catchy song and thats it your a celebrity instantly but i dont think that the labels or the bands should be suprised that people arent gonna pay $10 or more for a record with no gaurantee that its not

I think you will find in time that a lot of the music you find these days will not have the staying power of the old greats. I could be wrong, but it happens in my case. Just looking at your top bands quickly, I have the Bad Astronaut CDs, but how many times can you really listen to those? I like em, but I dont see my kids listening to them one day.

Well, the problem with that question is that no one can give a proper answer to it, since we just won't know until say 10 years time at the earliest. A lot of people will say, refer to the 70s as the "golden age" of music, but people only remembers the good stuff (ie Ramones, Clash, ect) and the mountains of shit that was produced during that decade has simply faded away. The same goes for the 80s and the 90s, and the same will happen to the 2000s. Like i said, out of the music that i listen to, some of my favorite music of all time has been made within the last 5 years or so. I used to think that the 90s was the best era of music, however with the amount of solid released I’ve been listening to lately, I’m starting to rethink that one. I suppose we will have to agree to disagree on that one.

I had (thankfully) forgotten about slipknot until I started working with teens. The all love it, and its really hard to explain what I like to them and why I think slipknot isn't any good. That and bands that were on the decline about 5 years ago (limp bizkit, SR 71, etc.) are still relevant to them. How?

Last year I saw six high school kids walking around with different Insane Clown Posse hoodies and shirts on. 10 years ago, when I was sixteen, ICP was seen as a flash in the pan fad band marketed to my age group that would fade away. In fact, I don't ever remember anyone wearing ICP shirts. When I saw those kids and it blew. my. mind.

Corey is 100% correct......when I love an album, I buy it. I may download it first in order to make sure it's good....but I will definitely buy it if there are more than 3 good songs on it. Unfortunately, most music blows. I will admit that there are only a handful of Slipknot songs that I like....but despite all the hate I'm sure the band will get here, they are better than 400 screamo bands.

As I would agree that 99% of all "screamo" sucks big time, I completely disagree with what you just said man. I would take any screamo band over Slipknot. They superblow dude. There are 3 bands that if you ever liked em, you probably suck.

Everyone here hates metal for little to no reason, and Slipknot got clumped in with the whole Nu-metal scene (not that it's totally untrue) so they get it even worse. They've moved beyond that crap and actually release pretty decent metal tunes.

There is way worse metal and espcially worse nu-metal bands than Slipknot. Besides I bet 99% of the people on here who talk shit abou them probably never have actually listened to them and just bash them on their own petty pre-conceived notions.
