Ben Nichols (Lucero) releases solo EP; Lucero debuts new (live) song

Ben Nichols, lead vocalist of Memphis' own Lucero, has released a new 7-song solo EP to coincide with his ongoing run on the Revival Tour with Tim Barry, Chuck Ragan and Tom Gabel. The EP is based around the novel, Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. Ben is selling the CD (and instant download) via the Lucero Website.

The band has also posted a live video of the track, "Johnny Davis" and you can check that out here.

Funny story. I was in Pittsburgh with Sleeper Horse and Echoes of Harper's Ferry. We had just crashed a girls birthday party next to the house venue and got kicked out. We walk into a bar with beer in hand and low and behold, the house band is covering a phish song. At least we were all pretty sure. Mike then proceeded to smash a beer can against my head. Thanks Mike.

Blood Merdian is fucking awesome. Blew my mind. I don't think the movie that's in the works can ever give that book justice.

Suttree is McCarthy's best, but yeah, Blood Meridian is pretty fucking incredible. And yes again, there is no way the movie will do it justice.

I'm currently reading the border trilogy and then I'll pick up Suttree. Have you read Outer Dark? It's sooo good. I can't get some of the imagery in the at book out of my head.

Outer Dark was in-fucking-credible. For some reason I never even made it halfway through Cities of the Plain, but I might have to pick it up again at some point.

Apparently Outer Dark has also gotten the cinematic treatment (although on a scale less grand than some of McCarthy's other books). Have you seen it yet?

I'm stuck on "Nobody's Darlings". I'd choose Drag the River just because of "It's Crazy".... but it's really a toss up between all three.

Yeah, it's a tough pick. I'd give Lucero a slight lead with DtR right behind. I only recently got into them so my familiarity with Lucero would be the tie-breaker.

I've got a couple of Whiskeytown songs but no albums. What are the ones I should look for?

Probably Drag The River because their most recent album was better than any of Lucero's albums. However, Lucero might have the strongest catalogue but it's very close. I'm not as big a fan of Whiskeytown.

Whiskeytown by far. I really like the other two, but they're not in the same league as WT. After that, I'd say Lucero then DTR.

This is an excellent EP. "The Kid" and "Chambers" are my initial favorites. And you can get a special t-shirt, which is great because I could never have enough of those. I am a complete sucker for the album/t-shirt deal.
