i'm not really sure, i've always enjoyed it a lot.

i guess it's a little dirtier than the blue album but for the most part it's still fuzzy pop-rock so who knows..

because it was too good. i bought it when it came out... then again i was in elementary school at the time

I'm quite sure it was due to people expecting the Blue Album Pt 2, and Pinkerton although arguably superior, was nothing like that.

I was 14, really liking the blue album but didn't like Pinkton. Now that I'm older I actually get most of the themes. It's more mature maybe?

one of those sophomore slump things. people just didn't care. then when they went away, everyone missed em.

its not because it was more mature, it wasn't received well because it was much much darker and talked about more taboo subjects that pop and rock radio wasnt ready for so it didnt get played. There werent any fun gimmicky pop crossover songs like buddy holly, and thats what people expected

Perhaps it's not a universal thing but where I'm from that look (hair net, mustache, wife beater, khaki shorts [usually made from cut pants], the bandanna in the back pocket and tattoos of that nature) are synonymous with Mexican culture. The nature of the video appears to be mocking of things of that nature (as it doesn't seem likely to be a look that Rivers would adopt on a daily basis).
I would figure wearing a dress that's synonymous with one culture in a mocking fashion is somewhat questionable (I used the term borderline because it's not as if he showed up in blackface eating watermelon). If he showed up with a headdress and moccasins people might make similar comparisons.

and i grew up in new england so i see it as the status symbol of poor whites overcompensating for failing classes in high school.

it's not racist, it's mocking a specific demographic that crosses racial boundaries. generally "tough guys" who "make trouble," you know?

Perhaps a better image could have been used. Where I'm from no white kid dresses like that, unless they're looking to get their ass kicked (tough guy or otherwise) and as the west coast is a big part of where that look originated, that's how I would instinctively interpret it. Not with white flunkies on the other side of the country who rip off other cultures.

I grew up in the west coast, knew plenty of white kids who hung with mexican gangsters, dressed the same and the they never got their ass kicked. I dont see the racism.
The attire is a culture, not a race.
Even if theyre mocking the culture its still not part of racism.
Just my two cents.

i grew up on the east coast and when i watched the video (before i even read Dante's comment) i immediately connected Rivers' character to a Mexican stereotype
