Fans launch petition to bring punk back to satellite radio

A number of punk fan have launched an online petition in order to convince XM/Sirius Satellite radio that there is an audience for the radio provider's former punk station, Fungus. The station has since been replaced with a 24-7 AC/DC station. While the all-AC/DC station is slated to expire in January, there is no word on what will replace it going forward. Sirius' former punk page is directing listeners to their Extreme Sports station which will include punk, hip hop and metal.

Both stations provided a mixture of vintage and recent punk rock, with Sirius promising acts like "Sex Pistols, Ramones, Misfits, Black Flag, The Clash, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Suicidal Tendencies, Pennywise, Fugazi and many more" while Fungus 53 hosted shows DJ-ed by Rancid, Joe Sib's Complete Control Radio and others. NOFX's Fat Mike even weighed in on the station, noting: "I hate the radio but I like Fungus/The only punk rock station, it's humongous." in their song, "Fungus" which appeared on the April 2005 7-inch in their monthly series.

My dad and I listened to Fungus religiously, I hope they bring it back.

Can anyone listen to AC/DC that much? If so, I'm sorry you enjoy boring, recycled blues riffs.

hey man, if they could do a 24/7 skatepunk station with boring, recycled power chord riffs and double-kick drumming, i assume you'd be satisfied?

as far as listening to them 24/7, the answer is obviously you can't listen that much, for the same reason why when the xmas station starts up, by the third time you hear 'mele kelekemaka' by reel big fish you want to stab out your eyes and/or ears with candy canes.

it's a promotional gimmick based around bringing awareness for their world tour.

One, I hate most skate punk, two you're comparing a genre with one band.

Gimmick or not, I know people who can listen to AC/DC THAT much and I don't understand how considering how mediocre a lot of their album tracks are.

Why not a Descendents station?

also, i agree to a point. if they had an ac/dc station solely consisting of the albums leading up to and including back in black but nothing after, i would be down with this station. i personally love early ac/dc though.

this whole argument is just for kicks, btw. i would also clearly prefer a punk station to an ac/dc station, i just figured i had to rep the oldtimers.

I only listen to Greek sports radio; it's funny because they only ever talk about the referees and the league being corrupt. I can't imagine a punk rock radio station being any better. I bet it comes off like a really bad fanzine.

Trade mix CDs (tapes are rather dead, but if you still got them, use them) with your friends. More fun and less predictable than the radio.

From what I can tell the punk channel is not coming back when AC/DC radio is over. On Tuesday when they started screwing everything up they put the Loft in the Punk channels place and moved AC/DC to Boneyard which now occupies the spot that used to be held by Buzzsaw. As far as I see it when AC/DC radio runs out in January the channel will go back to being Boneyard (mostly Hair metal with a little classic metal, the sad thing is the channel it replaced; Buzzsaw, was a much better channel playing classic 70's and 80's metal with very little Hair Metal)

I think the best thing we can do as fans of Punk Rock is bombard both Sirius and XM with emails expressing our displeasure with their choice to eliminate a channel(s) that has such a loyal following. We need to do this continually until they get sick of us and cave in. It's how we got the punk channel o

When sending emails please don't resort to name calling or swearing, all it does is give them a reason to dismiss us as a group goons.

In the 3 emails I have sent since Tuesday I have brought to their attention the numerous channels they decided to keep that basically share the same format; The Loft , The Spectrum and Coffee House essentially are the same channel, get rid of 1 or 2 of these. Do we really need both Jam On and the Greatful Dead Channel, this is a genre of music that is losing fans not gaining them. You know there are people at both Sirius and XM who are probably just as unhappy with the new changes as we are, lets give then some ammo.

Punk rock is one of the last pure forms of music and expression, it's survived every trend and fad and always will, it has the greatest and most loyal fans and Sirrius/XM needss to know that.
