A video of Ian Mackaye's recent visit to Saturation Art & Music Festival is now available. The legendary musician visited The Riverside Art Museum in Riverside California for a two hour spoken word/Q&A session to discuss his long experience with music, community building, and DIY Culture.

The camera angle is a little odd, but it's worth a look.

I saw Ian Mackaye at Crooked Beat saturday. I was wearing a band shirt with a straight edge phrase on the back and I felt stupid.

Do you even care if someone is edge? I would never put my beliefs down someone throat. When i was at the Phillies parade on Friday drunk guys kept knocking me over and yet I didn't go crazy, but everytime someone mention the word Straight Edge people seem to get pissed.

I honestly don't care, but in DC straight edgers are way elitist. The local bands have songs like "Self Respect: My Anti-Drug" with some cute lyrics about how I'm lame; I tend to get bitter. I never shove my beliefs down anyone's throat, not even in song.

I didn't want my first time meeting a hardcore hero to come off as some fanboy who blindly follows a life controlling, misunderstood subculture. It's not who I am.

so you let a minority of something affect your opinion of something as a WHOLE. why the hell would you make such a generalization? There are plenty of great edgers and plenty of shitty ones. Truth is, the quality of being straight edge says NOTHING about the person

I made it completely clear that I hate straight edge for what it actually is, not the people. And being straight edge says a lot about a person. It shows how they react to influence, their enviroment, and people. Extreme life choices reflect who you are. Get over it.

Oh, shit I knew their drummer was edge but thats odd.
I can see Rollins being that guy who just doesn't drink/smoke, but refuses the label. Kind of like Ian.
I'm becoming more and more like that as I observe all these bogus edge acts and hardline assholes continuosly surface.

Anyone familiar with Minor Threat knows straight edge =/= not drinking/smoking/no sex. More people should put down "Straight Edge" and listen to "Out of Step"; the bridge basically says anything that controls you, not just drinking and that jazz. At the time, the trend was to drink and smoke, so that's the only reason he said that. Sorry for the rant.

Yea, I feel that, and I strive not to define myself in any restrictive sort of way. I just try to live a life that I see as fit for myself, which just so happens to involve a lack of foreign substances/meat/general behavior that I see as detrimental to myself. I know you don't mean harm and sometimes people just get annoyed.

haha, a few months after crooked beat opened, i went out on a bike ride, was on my way up there. unfortunately it was almost 100, with humidity was 105-110 i think. so i had to lock the bike up and metro home from foggy bottom after puking in my mouth a couple times from heat exhaustion.

next day i came in on foot to pick up a few records and bill (the owner) said 'oh hey neil, you should have been here yesterday, henry rollins moved back to dc, and ian mackaye was showing him new stuff around town and took him here, you could have met them both'.

stupid dc weather.

Yeah, almost had a harsh run-in with douchebag straightedge kids in the mid-90s. I was in Twisters in richmond drinking a beer while wearing a minor threat shirt. Idiot kids really tried picking a fight.

I do go to sherwood, and we have pretty much the most fucking Edge alumni in all of MOCOr: this edge nazi Sarah King and this girl Katie Dance who takes some hardcore pictures. We had two pages of our year book last year devoted to straight edge and they made up a quote from me.

Yeah he doesn't mind being photographed but he hates being filmed, I saw him in 2006 and he said this. My guess is maybe they were trying to hide the camera or something.

Very good.
He's pretty inspirational and passionate, if not always totally cohesive.
I think it's a shame he doesn't want his appearances posted. Not everyone has the ability to go see him speak, and those who can't are missing out on something great.
