As record labels continue to struggle in the face of file sharing, free music and digital music sales, Warner chief exec Edgar Bronfman explained that all Warner-signed artists will now be required to join in so-called "360 deals." Under traditional labels, bands are primarily involved with record labels for recording and sales of their albums, but touring, licensing and merch revenues are completely separated from that relationship. Conversely, under the "360 deal," the label will receive a cut of all those different areas.
It is not completely without justification labels argue, as they are responsible for marketing and promotion of the bands and advertising can boost touring as well as CD sales revenue. Still, the move is particularly controversial since it ties the label and band together so tightly and bands with established touring careers (like Warner-signee Against Me!) may be giving up revenue that the label has not really earned, some argue. Wouldn't this be renegotiating terms of their already signed contracts? how is this even legal? 6+ Replies

Do you think they can do this retroactively in a legal way? I mean, I'm no lawyer but they can't just change a contract that's already been settled, right? So until the time came for a renewal, bands already signed on to Warner should be fine. 5+ Replies

So this means ticket and merch prices are going to get inflated to cover warner's cut? 6+ Replies

Once upon a time, a woman was picking up firewood. She came upon a poisonous snake frozen in the snow. She took the snake home and nursed it back to health. One day the snake bit her on the cheek. As she lay dying, she asked the snake, "Why have you done this to me?" And the snake answered, "Look, bitch, you knew I was a snake." 2+ Replies

I don't mean to sound all smug considering what a bad trend this is, but I warned about the unintended consequences of the filesharing thing. I said several years ago that filesharing sharing was going to force labels to seek alternative revenue streams with the artist taking it on the chin. So let me call the next five years: 1) Other labels will pile on this trend as it becomes the norm 2) The indies that don't adopt this model will eventually go out of business. There will be a consolidation of the market and we'll be left with larger labels controling a greater share of music. 3) There will be less opportunities for new artists to get heard outside of what they can finance themselves. Marketing dollars mattered before the internet age and marketing dollars still matter today. 4) The McMusic trend will continue to gro show rest of comment 12+ Replies

1. Why do the majors feel the need to make so much money? How would it hurt them to keep making what they do now, despite file sharing? I mean they are still raking in massive profits. Bloody hell. 6+ Replies

I doubt Warner Bros can stick it to major label bands like AM! because they have an existing contract.

this was fairly predictable. i have no sympathy for against me! and anyone else who was stupid enough to sign up to a major and expect anything other than to be treated like a whore. i doubt that every artist will have to do this... there can't have been a clause in everyones contract.

This is a bad solution, for the bands and maybe even for the label, many bands could decide to leave. The ones that are staying will have even less freedom and therefore they'll be producing even shittier music. Sad situation. | Features
