Warner and Youtube talks break down

While it seemed likely that all the major labels would be providing their music videos to Google's YouTube, talks with Warner have apparently broken down.

The two companies failed to come to an agreement and Warner will be pulling their music from the site. According to A Wall Street Journal report, Warner executives are unhappy with the amount of money they receive from YouTube, saying the site's payment levels are below those of competitors like AOL or MySpace.

The result is that popular videos from acts like Green Day , Against Me! , Dropkick Murphys, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, Mastodon, Flaming Lips, Avenged Sevenfold and others will soon be pulled from YouTube.

Videos exist basically as commercials anyway, so why would you pull down something that was basically free adtime for you? Real smart, Warners. Keeping up with the times and everything!

Dumb as this is on their part, I do think the whole mass theft of music releases via downloading is the main source of their troubles.

You know, I do agree. I definitely think downloading hurts. I think it also has something to do with the labels living in the past and not evolving though with the rest of the masses. I mean you could blame downloading, but at the same time Lil Wayne is selling two million albums in a month. Moral of the story? People are still willing to pay for music if its worth it to them. I can't really think of too much music being released on a major label outside of hip hop and the occasional rock album that I'm willing to buy.

Warner exec.: We must be losing money because of YouTube!! Everybody on there are watching videos for free!! We want people to pay to watch them though, even if they're home made! We'll get more people to buy into this! Thank you Viacom for giving us the idea first!

In their defense, they aren't losing their free ad time, as the videos are still available on other sites. So, if they are indeed compensated for each view one of their videos gets, if they're getting higher rates from other sites, they're not screwing themselves out of anything. People who want to see their videos will find them on other sites.

i see what you mean, but i know plenty of people who are either too lazy/don't care enough where they just stop looking for a video if it isn't on youtube as it's the most common and accessible thing to use. i think it's extra stupid of warner as they'll probably lose money instead of getting not as much as they want.

I technically have no heat. It stays fairly warm considering, but it's still fucking freezing. I leave the oven on and open because I don't pay for utilities. I've heard from people in NYC if you try to sue your landlord, you're pretty much blacklisted.

I'm actually on a vacation in Atlanta visiting the girls' family for the holiday, and it was surprisingly warm, like 60 degrees. Then I got sick and didn't leave the house for a week. I went outside for the first time in seven days today and holy bigger of god it was like a knife cutting through my coat. The south isn't supposed to be this hot, dammit!
