Hawks and Doves (Gared from Planes Mistaken for Stars) hit the studio

Peoria, IL's Hawks and Doves, featuring Gared O'Donnell of Planes Mistaken For Stars, is set to enter the studio to record the band's debut album with George Rebelo Hot Water Music / The Draft on drums and Chad Darby Averkiou on bass. Gared had this to say:

As it stands the songs are shaping up to be more of a full band approach and less singer/songwriter than I initially thought, which is fine seeing as there are plenty other acoustic beardy guys doing the genre right? That is not to say you won't get a bit of my more rustic side. It's inevitable that this project will get it's share of comparisons to Planes and that's fair {being I sing/play git/write the songs} but I must say in regard to that its shaping up to be kind of photo negative of a Planes LP.

The band will enter Crescendo studios on January 14th to record nine tracks with Derron Nuhfer and Addison Burns. The band previously released a seven inch at last year's The Fest for the song "Hush Money."

i met him outside a record store, we were randomly chatting and i didn't even recognise him until he introduced himself and it suddenly clicked! in all fairness though, the last pic i saw of him, he had really long dark hair and a beard, and he's cut it short and shaved now. really friendly guy though, really down to earth.

can't wait for this btw. if it's anything like the last track on "mercy" (practically a gared solo track), it'll be all kinds of awesome.

does anyone else think this whole leave-your-band-to-become-a-fokk-hero thing is getting a little ridiculous. I mean I will openly say that I like a few songs by the guys on the revival tour but put all together it's just silly. Are we to believe that these guys have had bluegrass/folk/country running in their veins all this time and just now we are hearing about it? ben nicholls is the exception obviously. I'm just saying a trend is a trend even if it does in some way involve the dudes from Avail and HWM

It's very possible that all of these guys really are getting back to their roots. Look at where most of them are from. Anyone from the south or southwest gets a free pass.

Most these guys grew up in the south, and where you come from surfaces in what you do artistically eventually, at least thats what I feel.

It's not like most of these guys came out of the woodwork with it. Country/folk music have always run very similar parallels, and I don't mean modern country music when I say that. Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and the the whole "outlaw" country music is very similar to the roots of punk rock as it is.

Most of, if not all rock based music falls back onto the Blues, Bluegrass, Folk and Country music anyhow, so I don't think it's just necessarily a fad as much as it is getting back to basics.

Agreed on all points. This isn't really a fad. The punx have always liked Johnny Cash, Hank, ect...

It's just that recently, they've decided to start playing it more instead of just listening to it.

I think a lot of that has to deal with the fact that really to be quite honest, there hasn't been any real variance in punk rock in such a long time, and now every body wants to wear eyeliner and chugga chugga break downs, and I think it's just a proper response by stripping away all the bullshit and just playing.

I wouldn't say it is strange for Chris or Chuck from HWM either, they did Rumbleseat after all. There was as time passed a rootsy feel to Avail in certain songs.

I still prefer most people's original bands but if they started bringing these folky or rootsy elements into their regular bands people might complain.

I agree. I'm kind of on the fence about the PMFS break up, in that part of me feels they broke up prematurely while the other part of me feels along the lines of "always leave them wanting more"

Same here. Aunts and older relatives are killing it for me. My mom is thinking of joining, at which point, I too will be done.

The shitty thing is that they have nothing better to do than send me all the gimmick bullshit features like "I just put up a (fake) Christmas tree. Would you like to too? Here is an ornament for your tree."

They also feel the need to send me endless friend suggestions of people I have no interest in adding. My wife's aunt added me and now she sends me friend suggestions for people that are like HER third cousin or some such bullshit.

Facebook/Myspace should not be allowed for old people, they ruin it. Stick to snail mail grandma.

I'd like to point out here that in my 21 years as a person who is involved with the underground metal, punk, and hardcore scenes, I have never been a "Thug", nor has my friends Paul, Ron, Or John, the other members of Deathcycle. As far as some of us wanting to be old school, thats just what we are. And in 21 years, not much has changed. The hardcore scene, especially, is still filled with wash-women and armchair quarterbacks that need to make themselves feel more important by talking shit about people they don't even know. If the "thug" comment is directed towards Paul and John for being past and present Madball personel, I'd like to correct you. John and Paul are just simply great musicians, and if you don't like Madball, that is your problem. And I really don't give a flying rat's ass who likes Deathcycle and who doesn't. We existed to play music and to make people think,

A photo negative of a Planes LP? It's the same outline of everything, but the brightness and darkness are reversed, right? If so, that means this record is going to be all about kittens, rainbows and chocolate milk...

Jokes aside, I get the feeling this record is going to rule.
