Brand New contributes song to new Greenpeace ad

Brand New has contributed their song, "Welcome to Bangkok," to a new PSA from Greenpeace. The ad targets Kimberly-Clark and their Kleenex™ product for it's impact on forests. The clip notes that Kimberly-Clark doesn't use recycled content in their consumer paper products including Kleenex™

They're not. They were taken off of the Threatened list in 2007. I think they're still fairly symbolic of nature though... Or the American Dream... Or something...

I find it's generally a majority of the public that are grossly informed on issues. At least Greenpeace is making an effort to improve the world.

Greenpeace is one of those organizations I consider almost counterproductive. Lobbying to prevent the use of GM seeds in starving nations who can't grow enough food with normal crops = stupid.

lots of green or liberal organizations shoot themselves in the foot by letting stinky hippies speak on their behalf. i know that sounds really shallow, but how many people in their 40s and 50s, who like it or not make most policy decisions in this country, are gonna listen to the protests of some person who looks like they are homeless and sounds stoned. they are going to question your decision making ability, or think your crazy, and then nothing changes...

The farmers in those starving nations don't want the GM seeds either, because they are then indebted to the corporation that sells them. Monsanto (or some other corporation) owns the patent to those seeds and when they're used, the farmers must pay them. Even farmers who have not purchased GM seeds, and who don't even want GM seeds, discover they have some GM plants growing in their fields from cross-pollination from a neighboring farm then are forced to pay.

This is on top of the issue of multinationals forcing crippling economic treaties onto politically weak third world countries that include a quota of annual GM products that must be purchased.

I don't have so thorough a background on it as you, but from what I understand, some of the farmers in those countries most definitely did want those GM seeds. It sucks that investing in GM crops would get countries any more entangled in the multinational corporate-web, but I'm not sure that was what Greenpeace was stressing with their case. It sounded like they were more worried about the environmentalist angle, which is low, considering those countries are starving. As I'm sure you know, Borlaug is pretty convinced that GM crops can do no environmental harm.

Greenpeace is more focused on the potential health concerns from eating GM foods. Because there hasn't been any conclusive test results going one way or another, it's just not known whether it will have a negative health impact down the line.

Personally, I'm leaning more on the organic side of the debate, but I can definitely see some benefits for GM. But on the other hand, I think GM crops wouldn't be needed at all if there was a better global food distribution solution because there's more than enough food in the world to feed every single person on the planet, but a lot of countries just aren't getting it while farmers on the prairies are subsidized by the government to burn piles of grain to avoid flooding the market and reducing their profits.

Great band, don't give a fuck about Greenpeace though. Of course if they asked me if they could use one of my songs, I'd let them. Can't really complain about exposure.

1. Never understood why people on here seem to have a boner for Brand New (or at lest used to)

2. Kleenex? Really? Nothing left to pick a fight with?

3. While I do feel that enviro groups serve a roll in getting people to think about issues that they might not otherwise consider, the fact is that they generally don't know what they are talking about from a scientific standpoint. They spread so much bullshit information in a lot of cases that it makes them hard to believe. This is of course more true as you get to the extremes (i.e. Earth Liberation Front-type groups vs. Greenpeace).

2. To be fair, with the amount of products they produce, think about how much that impacts.

is something they should really be worried about. Phosphorus in the watersystem does not get too much attention and is beginning to be a very serious problem. It's been talked about in the scientific community for years now, but the general public is often unaware of it. Way more of a problem than "killer" GM crops and other issues they waste their time with.
