Underoath calls Avenged Sevenfold "a gimmick"

In the latest Metalhammer, Underoath shared some choice words for popular punk/glam metal act Avenged Sevenfold. Guitarist Tim McTague explained:

What's popular, to a degree, is what pushed me to find something that isn't popular for Underoath. Chiodos or Escape The Fate who do kind of the same thing – screaming and singing and whatever – do it their way, so we're like, 'let's do it completely the opposite' because we don't want to be associated with them.

People might associate us with Avenged Sevenfold because they're pissed Republicans and 'so metal', but they're a gimmick, they're a circus. They can't play and they can't write a song. What's worse is the way they look.

If you need to have make-up and crappy names like Synyster Gates to sell records, then you shouldn't be here. That's not rock'n'roll to me. Arena rock maybe, but not real rock'n'roll. If you're basing yourself on how cool you are or how many girls you can trick into thinking your band is cool you can just… take that home.

Underoath released Lost in the Sound of Separation last year.

Because all christian bands suck. Furthermore, I think it's pretty dangerous that a band who is outspoken on the issue can influence a lot of teenagers. That's fine if you're religious or whatever, but let people make up their mind instead of preaching to 16 year olds.

but they aren't outspoken on it. They are just christians and they answer questions. Why would you want to listen to a band unless they write about what they believe in, whether it is "fuck the government" or "I Love God"?
Who the fuck said they preach at someone on anything? They don't tell anyone to believe what they believe. If someone asks you, you answer the fucking question. If you write a song, you better be honest about what you are thinking and who you are. What the hell is dangerous about anyone talking about their opinion? I get this weird feeling that everyone is threatened by anyone who thinks differently than they do and it confuses the hell out of me.

Christianity is a religion. it does not describe music. the word rock describes the music. And rock, after all, ONLY describes the music. It does not describe a certain criteria of person.

I agree with letting kids make up their own minds. Many punk bands force anti-religion on teenagers...

You know what bothers me? Why aren't there any good Christian bands? Like, what the hell? I wouldn't have any problem listening to a Christian band if they made good music.

Also, it bothers me that because of people like this, everyone thinks all Christians are republicans. I don't understand how a Christian could be a Republican. Ever. Republicans are totally anti-compassion. I'm a leftist Christian, and there's tons of us out there.

Since when is having a religion a gimmic? They don't have a crucifix on their album. In interviews they would be asked about religion and they would just answer it, and yes naturally it would come out some in the lyrics because they write their own songs about their own lives.

It's not like they are wearing promising rings and making a press statement that they are pure. That would be a gimmic.

my fiancee (then girlfriend) has lived here since '03 and when i moved in with her we were able to split a huge studio for $900 total, which is super super cheap. Most of our friends live here, so we stayed when we moved out to a new apartment.

There are many things (and people) that I hate about this neighborhood, but it gets a bad rap. If you skip all of the yuppies and electro-clash bull shit and pseudo intellectual pitchfork group, there are some good people here.

I just hate this stupid shit surrounding christian bands. I've seen both bands live, and sure, Underoath was definitely the tigher of the two. But, for a guitarist to say another band "can't play," from my experiences, avenged sevenfold are collectively better musicians. From the two shows that I've seen...

Its dumb when bands call each other out like this. One is that avenged sevenfold seems technically proficient on their instruments. Who cares what avenged sevenfold does with their gimmick? Im not sure if i agree completely with critiquing another bands "gimmick," because really thats the only thing that makes music stand out these days. Everyones got an angle. Elvis Presley and Fugazi both had a shtick, and i don't think there's many who would deny that both of those bands made bigger impacts because of things "other" than their music. Elvis made music big buisness. Fugazi made music that was a conduit for personal/social reform. So some bands want to talk about big tits and booze instead of people being evicted because of a property developer wanting to make a shopping mall, big woop.

avenged sevendust is just riding the wave of overdone hedoism that makes being 15 awesome/challenging.

Underoath is far and away from the current "screamo" scene, I think. Yeah, They're Only Chasing Safety was pretty awful and sounded a lot like every other bad band doing the exact same thing at the time, but with their last two albums they've really become their own band. They don't have the chugga chugga breakdowns, or the metal posturing, or the annoying synth as much anymore.

As for Tim's comment here, I just think it's funny. I wonder if they knew about Fat Mike's comment saying the same thing. Maybe this is the start of a scene-wide uprising of bands that hate ASF so much that they kick them out of music forever.

i'd have to disagree... gaslight has a pretty obvious "gimmick" from their 50s/60s nostalgic lyrics to their appearances and just their overall aesthetic. It may or may not be sincere but it comes off far too forced to feel that sincere to me. We all know those dudes drive cars built in the 90s, play xbox, and don't go out with marias and darlings to dance halls on the weekends.

Christianity isn't a gimmick, it's a belief. Sure, there are probably bands who are riding that wave AS a gimmick (majority of T&N bands) and not being legit but Underoath has proved time over time again as a band and people that it's legitimate. Read any interview that you can.

I don't know, man. After having read through the comments, and the actual interview and all that, the only thing I can surmise is...who cares? One band shit-talked another band. I don't particularly find either band to be anything listenable, but I don't care if they dress up like clowns or worship clouds. That's there prerogative. Both seem to succeed just fine without the others help, and that's cool.

The truth is, the only important benefactor here in this, and with any music at all, is that while posturing is fucking douchey, the only people that really matter are the kids showing up to the shows. It's someplace for them to go when shit is horrible, or things are good

Who is anyone to actually judge that?

Still, I'd argue that behind the scenes, NOFX acts drunk and humorous, whereas bands putting on make-up and standing at the front of the stage in a Jesus pose probably don't act all to "Sinister" or "Vengeful" when they're playing video games or whatnot.

Underoath out plays Avenged musically, hands down. I"m not the biggest Underoath fan, but I admit their last two albums are incredibly well written. Just because Mr. Gates can write a tight solo and Shadows thinks he's the James Hetfield of the generation doesn't make them better musicians. Last two Avenged Sevenfold albums are trash, at least the last two Underoath albums are trying to push the boundaries of the genre they have helped create, which is now crowded of bands that think writing about sluts and slitting your wrist is hardcore. Underoath is hated here simply because of their christian beliefs and the horrible rep that They're Only Chasing Safety gave them, but I bet half the people who listened to the past two efforts have found something appealing and unique about their music.

Avenged sevenfold is not anything close to a gimmick. Just listen to them and you could tell they are the real thing. They’re one of the best bands I’ve ever heard in my life. The way M.Shadows sings is truly amazing. The way Synyster Gates and Zachy Vengeance play is out of this world. Underoath is talking trash because they could never amount to Avenged Sevenfold. All the singer for underoath does is screaming into a microphone as loud as he can to make up for how lousy he is a singing. You can’t even understand what the mofo is saying. He needs to go to M.Shadows for some lessons and an ass kicking. Another thing, Avenged Sevenfold is not glam metal. What in the hell makes y’all think they are glam metal. People in glam metal wouldn’t be able to beat the shit out of underoath which I’m sure A7X can.
