Green Day lashes out at Wal-Mart censorship policy

Green Day has come into conflict with the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart, over the content of their new album, 21st Century Breakdown. The superstore chain refused to stock the CD because they wanted a version of the album edited for language and content and the band refused.

Billie Joe Armstrong responded:

Wal-Mart's become the biggest retail outlet in the country, but they won't carry our record because they wanted us to censor it. There's nothing dirty about our record. They want artists to censor their records in order to be carried in there. We just said no. We've never done it before. You feel like you're in 1953 or something.

If you think about bands that are struggling or smaller than Green Day ... to think that to get your record out in places like that, but they won't carry it because of the content and you have to censor yourself. what does that say to a young kid who's trying to speak his mind making a record for the first time? It's like a game that you have to play. You have to refuse to play it.

Wal-Mart said that it's the company's long-standing policy not to stock any CD with a parental advisory sticker. While Armstrong, Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool are still top-sellers without Wal-Mart, Armstrong said the store's policy is disappointing, considering it has become the dominant seller of CDs with the decline of traditional music stores.

This won't affect the sales of the record to actual Green Day fans, but there music is being played in every dental office and supermarket these days. Seeing as a very large percentage of the polulation shop at Wal-mart, I would assume this will destroy a lot of sales. A lot of suburban soccer moms will not go out of their way to buy music, but if they are at Wal-mart buying diapers and food, there is a good chance they may consider picking it up, as it is right in front of their face.

Don't understimate the buying power of Wal-mart. I hate that company, and will not shop there, but most people I know do. A large portion buy music there. They would never call themselves collectors, or even anything more then an average music fan, but upon occasion they will buy a new release from there.

That isn't true. They've always had video games and movies that were "edgy", while their music collection has been neutered. This is well documented. You could pick up Doom or Diablo, which both feature heinously violent acts and satan, but you couldn't buy an uncensored copy of In Utero.

Maybe you should be like NOFX and not make albums with the PA sticker. You'd be surprised how they get away with it like on Wolves In Wolves' Clothing with something like "Instant Crassic".

Pretty much the way one gets a PA sticker is if they say FUCK so many times on the album (maybe goes with SHIT as well), They never give a shit about content inside the case either. If there's something bad on the outside, it will be censored. Ie. Willie Nelson's reggae album with a weed plant on the cover was replaced by a palm tree in Wal-Mart stores.

Actualy, NOFX does not get a PA sticker because they are on Fat Wreck which is not part of the RIAA. PA stickers were the majors' answer to the pressure they were getting to censor content. They agreed to do that for fear of government intervention.

They should have told the PMRC to go fuck themselves.

Indie labels don't really do the PA sticker. They're not part of the RIAA so they don't have to. Also, I'm pretty sure Pump Up The Valium had a sticker on it.

Well, the RIAA did sign a voluntary agreement with the PMRC and, I believe, Congress in the mid 1980s. So they do have to, unless they rescind the agreement.

It's because NOFX's label isn't part of the RIAA so they aren't inclined to. Notice how almost no independent release has a sticker despite having explicit content.

Haven't seen "East Bound And Down" so no opinion. I loved how him as that douche in Pineapple Express, but really.... when Will Ferrell was on Conan, Danny McBride was on doing that karate character which I thought was dumb. He's pretty much a Will Ferrell bitch.

Is this really relevant? Why is Green day so concerned that people who shop in wal mart can't buy their cd's? It should be quite the opposite considering the D.I.Y. ethics of punk. They should be encouraging their fans to purchase their new album in a place that supports music and not mass consumerism. Hell they should be supporting online sales of hard copies before lamenting the lack of wal mart love!

who buys cd at walmart anyways? dont think it will even matter if they carry it or not..... if someone is going to walmart to buy a green day album they will more than likely go to target or barnes and noble too!
