Green Day's performance of "East Jesus Nowhere" from last night's VMAs is available online. The band won awards for "Best Rock Video," "Best Direction," "Best Cinematography" for their song, "21 Guns" from 21st Century Breakdown.

there are some cringeworthy lyrics in this song, and the new record is mediocre at best, but green day's always been a pretty great live act and that's not a bad performance.

Yeah, they definitely tried to remake a lot of American Idiot with the newest album. Give Me Novocaine -> Restless Heart Syndrome, St. Jimmy -> Christian's Inferno, Jesus of Suburbia - > 21st Century Breakdown, and so on.

I'm going to pull Green Day Fan Seniority Rank on you here and say that they definitely did. "East Jesus Nowhere" is almost the same exact song as "Holiday." Angular, atonal guitar riffs. Bass heavy bridge with megaphone vocals. And the chorus sounds very, very similar to "Holiday." Then if you look at the lyrics on the album, there are a lot of parallels (listed above). The difference is that American Idiot is the much stronger album, lyrically and musically. 21CB isn't the worst album known to man, nor Green Day's worst recording - *cough* Sweet Children EP *cough* - but it wasn't exactly worth waiting 5 years for, by any means.

Completely agreed...they went out as subtly as they went through the rest of the series, and it was a great sendoff. Dale giving Nancy the head rub, Kahn not being a total hardass, Boomhauer having a job, then the father and son "yep." Nicely done all around.

oh thanks for clearing that up. I thought he was saying something about how Billie Joe's hairstyle was like an Asian's hairstyle, even though there are tons of countries that fall under the category of Asia, so there's really no such fucking thing, so what he said would have been really fucking dumb. With 4 billion people in Asia, the word doesn't work as a descriptor for anything other than geography.

Word is that they asked him and he wasn't into it. But if you think about it, he's got a good thing going, he can play every show with one of the biggest bands in the world, and still have a degree of anonymity in his day to day life. Sounds good to me.

I remember reading about their performance on the '94 VMAs and laughing. The MTV executives wanted them to play "Basket Case" but they played "Armatage Shanks" instead. Someone asked their tour manager or something if the song was the same length and the response was, "They're all the same length."

I think it's cool they played a song that probably won't be a single.

the record in general, isn't as impressive as the world makes it to be.
