Green Day to release 7-inch box set

Green Day has announced a new box set to compile their many 7-inch singles. The $150 set will include 42 songs pressed on 21 vinyl singles limited to 2500 copies.

The set reaches as far back as the band's early Lookout! Records material including "Going to Pasalacqua" and ends with "Know Your Enemy" and "21 Guns." Interestingly, the set also includes singles written by the band's two alter egos, The Network and Foxboro Hot Tubs.

Sooo.... 21 records for $150. That's roughly $7 for material that's already been recorded and released. I mean...I guess there's art and stuff but this still seems a bit excessive.

This a nice idea. Those that don't like the price of $7 per a record should consider that the average new 7-inch in Chicago record stores is $6. Most mailorder records are $5 now. $150 is a fine price, especially if you like novelty box sets.

Exactly, it's not like you're being charged $150 to hear new material that won't be available otherwise. Do you think anyone will actually listen to these records? It's going to sit on someone's shelf as a decoration.

yeah seriously, and considering there are only 2500 which sounds like a lot, but isn't that much when compared to how many green day fans there are. i'm sure you could get your moneyback and then some only a couple years down the line on flE-bay. hell i see people paying $20+ there for 7 inches all the time. it's a little steep and could be cheaper, but it's not THAT outrageous.

But those $5 and $6 price tags are usually for new material. This is all old shit that has more than recouped years ago. Addtionally, records become cheaper the more you press. Initial plating costs and small runs (>500) are what make a lot of punk 7" expensive. With a run of 2,500 I imagine the production cost per item would be greatly reduced.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think they're making millions off this but it's certainly not inexpensive.

Dude, I wish it was the 1920's! I'd make a killing in the stock market and then take out "Dude jumping out of a window" insurance on my fancy new automobile and make a ton on that. After everything went to shit I'd invest in weapon technology and develop the Iron Man suit in time for World War II, making billions, cutting the length of the war in half and getting to take out Hitler personally with a wrist mounted rocket launcher.

In my old age I'd spend my time ripping of classic movies that weren't yet made and buggering Marlyn Monroe.

Oh, for sure it's expensive. More than I'd spend on any Green Day material, but I don't think it's completely unreasonable if you're a super fan.

In Baltimore new punk seven inches are usually $4.50. Unless it's by Fucked Up. Then it's 8.

Yeah I don't know where Red Eye is getting his stats but most of the new 7"s I buy in stores and distros are still $4-5 for the most part, unless it's Youth Attack or an Under The Influence record.

at Reckless Deathwish stuff is $5-6 or more, new Integrity is $6, Polar Bear Club is $6, all Dischord stuff is $5, Suburban Home non-uti series things are mostly $6. Everything at Dave's is $8-11. Where are you getting these $4 records?

You mean labels or stores? Labels would be stuff like Dirtnap, Douchemaster, Suburban Home, etc. Matador and Sub Pop shit is way too fucking expensive.

I usually end up paying about $4 for a 7", but there are a lot of good record stores within a two hour radius from where I live. Every time I make the drive to Richmond, I end up getting cool stuff at either vinyl conflict or Plan 9

A couple of these make absolutely no sense. They just pulled random songs they liked off of LPs and created a brand new, not-real 7" for them? Then when they do have things that were actually released as 7"s (Waiting and Geek Stink Breath for example) they don't even have the original track listing.

This is incredibly stupid.

So I went home with some chick last night...
