LP33.tv spoke to Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman about the 15th anniversary of the tour as well as the production of the documentary which opens tomorrow.

There's a weird kind of punk rule (excuse) that Kevin Lyman uses to justify shit music at warped tour, that because the music isn't punk, that makes it punk. That it's going against the rules of punk, which is punk.

So basically Kevin Lyman is stating that:

X equals X
because
X does not equal X

Awesome.

Warped Tour was a really cool idea that has since been subverted by trends and the need to make money. The last 4 years have hardly been worth noting at all.

Not so much always. Back in 2000 the biggest acts were typically either former big names on a bit of a lag (Green Day before warning, Weezer just before reuniting and after they got shit for Pinkerton, Bosstones before Jack Knife). The big popular band on the tour was Papa Roach who had been signed to the tour before their big album came out. Sure there were "punk trend" bands but as a whole, most of the MTV "band of the moment bands" weren't there. You had bands like Good Riddance, TSOL, The Lunnachicks and Snapcase all mainstaging. I'd like to see them even pull a crowd at today's warped tour.

Again, it wasn't all candy and sunshine but it was a lot different than the warped tour of the last 5 years.

agreed on the stark contrast between of the lineups pre-2000 and the lineups from the last 5-6 years. also the revolving door of bands like bad religion, bouncing souls, anti-flag, rise against, rancid, pennywise, and nofx just doesn't cut it anymore, if it ever did.

i just think there arent enough B-mainstream punk bands anymore. why do you think he has to recycle the same bad religion, antiflag, pennywise, rancid, flogging bands constantly....becaue there are no other bands to fill those spots. no other punk bands that would attract a large enough crowd in orrder for the festival to be succesful.

once kids start to make mainstream-punk again....warped tour can go back to having those bands. Now of course there are a lot of actual punk bands in the world, so why not have them play? They should. Warped should get their mainstream money making bands + add underground punk bands...and then we're all happy.
