Gaslight Anthem: "Come Together"

Gaslight Anthem recorded a cover of the Beatles classic, "Come Together," for the Fox 6 O'clock Rock Report in Vancouver, BC. The original song comes from the Beatles 1969 album, Abbey Road and remains one of the iconic songs of the 60s and 70s. It was written by John Lennon.

OK, so forget about Gaslight here, cuz I'm not really a fan. But you seem to have solid musical taste and I think you're short-changing yourself here.

Beatles from 'Rubber Soul' onward: shit is just amazing. The skinny-tied, bowl-cut band most laypeople hate for overexposure deserves the ire, but everything after that is consistently fucking awesome. Dare I use the word "underrated" in reference to the Beatles? Because those 5-6 LPs after 'Help!' are just about the best ever recorded by anyone. All in a row. In a total of only four years. Epic.

Looks like everyone's gonna be trading in their Springsteen worship for Beatlemania.

I still don't see what makes these guys so amazing. I mean they're fine musicians and songwriters. But nothing stands out about them at all. I mean, pop punk bands who sound alike at least come up with different riffs and strums and stuff that make them who they are. These guys play the same four chords, the same way, in more than two songs, on one album. How are they gods, but bands like Paramore are just shit on?

If we're talking about their instrumentals, you need to listen closer. A good majority of Gaslight Songs have some pretty intricate, non-standard-EVH fretboard tapping. They have great leads in general. Not so much 59 sound, but Sink or Swim had incredible variety and overall catchy choruses. They just sound so honest when they do what they do. I don't think they're gods, but I do think they are a fantastic band. Let's not forget, a lot of early music was the same chords the same way -- it's the subtlties.

I love Paramore and their new album blows the last one away. It's great.

The Cure leads are good, I'll admit, and I'm not bashing them or anything. And yes, they are honest, I really do respect that. I just think they're a bit overrated around here, especially when they copy themselves on the same album, ala Rancid. Even Linkin Park waited a couple years.

I'll give Sink or Swim another listen, I don't remember liking it very much. They do better with a more atmospheric guitar tone.

I can't listen to a lot of early music, simply for that reason. I respect that it paved the way and all that, but man, some of it is just not good.

The new Paramore kicks so much ass. I'm glad I have you around to back me up on this.

Lyrics are pretty subjective. You either like them or you don't, unless they're just awful. I wouldn't call them awful, and while I agree they're not the best, I would rather listen to better music with worse lyrics than vice versa.

Oh, come on. Answering this properly would be a huge waste of time. Just hit up Wikipedia or something. And listen to almost anything they recorded after their bubblegum early '60s pablum, because there are quite a few more chords there...and sitars, and horns and tape loops...

It's not just about how YOU hear that music right this moment. Great art has to be appreciated in context, and historically. What the Beatles did was, at the time, profoundly fucking revolutionary. How can you even try to compare something 40 years old with a current band, based purely on sound, even? They are "gods" because (somewhat arguably) they were the first ones to get it right.

Do you honestly think if the members of Paramore were born 60 years ago that they'd have been better than the Beatles?

which big market chain store has the worst music section?

I can't decide between target and k mart.
Now, target has tendencies to stock smaller bands but they only have one aisle for rock/pop music. In which the majority of the music is just multiple copies of a tired pop album.

K mart is cool and sells cds with parental advisory stickers but they too are so understocked in anything resembling the 1990's.

My ex roommate had a few discussions on ska and he never liked anything outside of the 1st wave except for Reel Big Fish due to their live show. Other than that, it's just 1st wave he was into, namely the Specials.

I guess my best argument really is that a lot of critics hate how music grows and branches out. Case in point: ska converging into punk in the 90's. That's pretty much what it turned into.

Well, its really hard to beat the Specials. I started out with Operation Ivy and Less Than Jake, but once I got to the Specials, it was pretty much over. But that's second wave though.

1st = Jamaica
2nd = 2-Tone
3rd = 90's + beyond

Even though they're much more influenced by traditional ska, I still think the Slackers are the best example of the Specials legacy. Taking ska, blending it with some modern themes, adding a bit of punk angst... great stuff.

it's not, there are just too many better beatles songs. abbey road is definitely their most overrated album as a whole - here comes the sun and mean mr. mustard are incredible but most everything else is middle of the road for them. it's still an awesome album and better than most bands will ever do, but when you've got revolver, magical mystery tour and sgt. peppers in your arsenal come on...
