Iggy Pop talks about reunion shows

Iggy Pop spoke with The BBC about the The Stooges plans to reunite for a tour in 2010 and how the band will continue without guitarist Ron Asheton. Asheton passed away in January 2009.

Pop explained:

We're all very sorry about Ron. His spirit within the group remains with the rest of us and he is still a presence within the group without being on the physical plain.

It can't be that big of a reunion... they just fucking played Loaded in the PArk last summer in London, with Supergrass, The Gossip, and The Hives.

They are referring to this being a reunion becuase the orriginal guitarist, James Williamson, is coming back to the band after 30 years.
I hope he asks not to play anything off The Weirdness because that record was terrible.

No he has not been back. He was out of music altogether for 30 years! The Stooges were playing shows with Ron on guitar, and only played songs from the first 2 albums(which was great, don't get me wrong), but now that they have Williamson back in the fold, they will be playing Raw Power material, one of the greatest punk records ever recorded! How could this be viewed as anything BUT big news on a website that is dedicated to punk rock??? Where do you people come from?

I'm well aware of their history and saw them several times. I also know he's been out of music. What I'm saying is, I was under the impression they'd played some shows earlier this year/last year with the Raw Power line up. I think that was the initial post's point, as well.

Gotcha, Im just amazed at the lack of interest in general. Not referring to you specifically obviously as you have seen them, but I never thought I'd get the chance to see the Stooges live, and it was a treat. But now, the chance to see them with James? I'm pretty excited about it, even if it is a wheel chair version. I guess I'm just old.

Do you honestly think Iggy would cash in on the Stooges name now? At this stage in his career? Do you think that the Stooges would put half as many fans in the seats as an Iggy Pop show would? There are people on this site ignorant to the importance of the Stooges, nevermind the casual fan.

If they bill them as Iggy and the Stooges, then yes maybe. But if Iggy was looking for a cash grab, the Stooges name alone would not generate half the interest, in my opinion. For as influential as they were, they almost fly under the radar. There are plenty of people out there that only know of Iggy Pop solo material.

The reunion was/has always been billed as "Iggy and the Stooges" even when it was the line up who recorded as "The Stooges."

Okay, I think you are missing my point though. A Stooges reunion isn't exactly what the world has been waiting for. Iggy and the Stooges cannot be seen as a cash grab, because most people don't care, evident by the lack of response on a "punk" news site. He found success as Iggy Pop. He is rich out of his mind because of solo output. If he was only after money, he could tour as Iggy Pop.

I think people just like to look for the bad in everything, and whenever a band reunites, it's automatically a cash grab.

I'm not missing your point, at all. I was just pointing out that, in fact, it IS billed as Iggy and the Stooges.
And while it's not a get rich quick scheme for him, it's certainly putting a LOT of money into his bandmates' pockets. More so than they'd make otherwise. Plus, the "Stooges" allows a) a higher ticket price for the novelty sake, as well as b) probably getting more money out of a label to do a "stooges" record than another Iggy record.

If you think they're doing this for anything OTHER than money, I think you're crazy. These guys are in their sixties. They broke up, like, thirty years ago. Times are tough for everybody. Money, friend. Money.

"Oh, our guitarist died? What'll we do with all these unsold T-shirts?"

The Stooges, in their prime were a commercial failure. This isn't like a Zepelin reunion. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they will keep the money, but I wouldn't put it past them that they just might actually enjoy playing these songs for their fans. In Iggy's and James last interview, they were discussing how they would be incorporating rarities like got a right, into the set. That's not something that would appeal to the casual fan. Plus, the drummer happens to be Ron's brother, give him a little credit.

As much as I am looking forward to the tour, I hope they don't record any new material. The weirdness was not even listenable for me. If anything, maybe re-record old material from the years they were without a label, and only demos, bad recordings exist of. That could be cool, maybe. I think James mentions doing that in an interview I read.
