They're saying the people they grew up idolizing weren't on stamps, which, 20 years ago when that song came out, you didn't see MLK Jr, Malcolm X and many other black men on stamps. How you get something about copkilling out of that I have no idea. I'd really like an explanation though.

Sorry, I wasn't at all clear with what I was trying to say (part of the problem with using the internet at work). Yes, the song is about people Public Enemy idolized weren't on stamps.

My point was that the quote as used by the band is fully removed from the Public Enemy song and is being misappropriated to glorify this one guy for gunning down a cop. At least, that's pretty clear what the band's intent is with this, and that's how the average person is going to view it as well (as evidenced by the controversy it's stirred up). The fact that Torres is unapologetic over the shirt's interpretation is further proof of this.

I don't know what your solution is so I can't really say much more. I find it funny though that the people with the dimmest views of human nature often advocate ways of living (anarchy, for example) that require the greatest amounts of faith in it.

I guess I should state my own opinion:
I think we need to improve things on two fronts.

First, we need a legal system that does a better job of protecting ALL members of society, not just property owners. Also, it needs to be structured in a way that ensures all members of society are protected under the law equally (I know that's what our current system supposedly does, but that's a fucking joke).

Second, we need better policing of our police. When they break laws, or abuse their power there needs to be ACTUAL consequences.

Look, yeah, Cops do shitty things sometimes. Sometimes it's justified, sometimes it's not. A black guy getting shot to death taking out his wallet, well yeah the cops who do that should go to jail. Some asshole drinking in the street and then makes a big stink about it when the cop tells him to stop doing that, well yeah I don't feel bad for that guy getting beat down.

Same with the "wait until you're raped". Cops don't do shit about that either. They generally only take action if you are female, raped by a stranger, and need stitches. Keep in mind that men are also raped (but are basically told to suck it up) and less than 10% of rapes are stranger rapes. Most are done by acquaintances and are nonviolent. Even then, I believe only about 2-4% of rape cases end with the rapist going to jail. All of that humiliation that the victim goes through is for nothing. It's sickening. Cops don't do shit.

I did a year in prison myself, and used to run on the opposite side of the law for about 15 years, arrested countless times. I have indeed ran into my share of asshole cops, but I have also ran into some really nice cops, who sincerely want to help.
