Tours: AFI / Ceremony

AFI have announced the support and dates for their first shows of 2010. The band will kick off the tour on January 15th and shows will mainly feature Bridge Nine Records hardcore act, Ceremony. Other shows will include Wolves And Thieves, Viva Hate and others.

I'm so disappointed in AFI.
I'm all for going in a new direction...
but on their most recent tour...not one song from before Sing the Sorrow.

There are a lot of people that really love their older stuff.

At least do one or two songs from the old days.

Apparently ticket sales haven't been all that brisk...there's probably a reason.

I'd probably go if I was promised Sing The Sorrow in its entirety. But I'm not so I won't.

I read an interview where Davey said that the old songs just don't fit with their new stuff, He feels there's just too much of a difference between say Triple Zero and Miss Murder and that it would be weird to play them in the same set. I agree though that they should play at least 1 or 2 songs for the older fans. Or even better, book 2 dates for each city and one night do Art of Drowning and before and the next night all the new stuff. That would rock!

Um, I saw them 7 times on their most recent tour and saw them play all of these songs:

They've actually made it a point to play at least two old songs on this tour. They've also played:
The Boy Who Destroyed the World
Half-Empty Bottle
This Secret Ninja
Wester

They even gave the crowd in Austin over the weekend the option of hearing either "NyQuil" or "Bikeage". The crowd chose "NyQuil", unfortunately, but still -theyl gave them the option.

They played NyQuil off of Answer That...when I saw them and they played 6 to 8 off of Art of Drowning as well.

I don't see what's weird about it. They're from the same area, the AFI guys were/are hardcore fans.

"Ceremony were on tour and I think their drummer couldn't join them on the road," Havok says, "and they had a drummer of Have Heart playing for them, who is a straight-edge kid. That made three out of the four members of the band for that evening be straight-edge kids.

"So they asked me if I wanted to sing that night, if they would play 'Straight Edge Revenge,' which would put four vegan straight-edge kids onstage -- which is the way it would have to be if you're going to sing that song. And it was really fun." He laughs. "It was a pleasure to join them."

My guess is club. There isn't an arena in Tempe, just a club. The best one in the state, too.

I am going to the missoula show. I love there old stuff, they better play a single second. I think thats the only old song they play. All the new fans will hate ceremony. I will love watching the crowd go nuts and people just hating on the mosh pit. 14 year old girls will not like ceremony is my guess

They played A single second in their festival set this summer, which was awesome, but the new album has seen total immortal drop off their regular setlist I think. Which leaves Days of the Phoenix and God Called in Sick Today as the only two pre Sing the Sorrow tracks you can expect to hear.

They occasionally bust out "The Days..." and haven't played "God Called..." this tour, thankfully. See my post above about all the old songs they've played.

Ceremony has gone downhill hard post "violence violence", both on record and in a live setting, though last time i saw them, they had the drummer from blacklisted filling in. Still, with how much (deserved) hype flying around a few years ago it's a shame to see them just boring these days.

i've seen them like 4 times, first i believe before violence violence came out, and last when they toured with have heart and blacklisted. last time i saw them you couldn't even tell one song from the other, for the most part. their drummer made them and losing a guitar player didn't help a whole lot either.

Yeah, I mean there were still some parts that were reminiscent of Violence Violence on Still Nothing Moves You (not coincidnetally my favorite parts) but I just wasn't as into it. Glad somebody came out and said this because I am on the fence.

Not sure I totally agree with you btw, but glad it was said. They went to sounding more generic-y IMO.

i do listen to it sometimes, and appreciate the more punk influenced stuff, and even understand that ceremony couldn't just rely on thrash riffs and blast-beats forever, but like you said, it's a bit generic. If they released still nothing... first, at least a star would have peeled off of half of the reviews for it.

I just heard another band that sort of sounds like Ceremony (vocals mainly) but the music is just..boring. The band is called Rah, from Toronto I think.

Listening to that made me realize how good Violence Violence was.

Skin Like Iron is the best band of the bands mentioned. Canadians, it would behoove you guys to check the Vancouver date out.

Ceremony playing with Afi is interesting. It would be funny to see how many 14 year old girls hate them, and how many will be texting their friends and being like "omg I'm so hardcore right now". Hopefully they do the Red C cover.

Have you seen Ceremony? I don't think they can play and NOT bring out "Pressure's On."

I saw them play once at United Blood Fest this year. They were pretty good live, but "Pressure's On" was definitely the highlight for me.

It's just a fantastic song. I didn't know if that was just a one time thing (I know they recorded the cover for one of their albums) or if they did it regularly.

I'd probably be happy for Ceremony getting more exposure if the majority of AFI's fanbase is made up of 14-16 year old overweight Got Topic chicks.

I really wish I had skipped my 10am class to get tickets to the Petaluma show because now it's sold out. They should've released the openers ahead of time, then I would most definitely have skipped. Fucking Ceremony! Wolves and Thieves are really good too.

Have you seen the live DVD/heard the live album? Vocally, the old stuff just sounded bad. I love the old stuff as much as the next fan, but I'd rather hear the new stuff because it sounds better live.

I've seen Ceremony open for AFI before and it was a terrible, terrible match. Just... yikes. (Because this was at a secret show in '06, obviously Shut Your Mouth type sound would work well with it.)
