they are playing a place that has a capacity around 100 in DC and then a 500+ venue in baltimore. this makes no sense.

have you been here before? there isnt much of a 'scene' in dc, for a variety of reasons.

still love this place, and i think that the situation is getting better lately (i swear the city has gotten younger and more 'punk rock' since obama took office, but maybe i'm just projecting)

there is much more of a "scene" in dc than in baltimore. i went to a million shows in and around dc in 2002 through 2006 when i was living in college park. in 2002 through 2004 there were a million shows always going on everywhere in dc. american university used to have shows all the time that were always free or $5. college park also had it's fair share and wmuc still had shows almost every week (not third rail shows). then again from what i hear these bands have nothing to do with punk, so who knows.

i moved to dc (well, arlington, in clarendon) back in march of 03.

ever since then, i've really thought of this as an indie rock, hip-hop (well, go-go), and jazz town. (also, shitty cover bands) and doesnt have much of a 'punk' scene. i mean, even look at fort reno. they pretty much only play indie shows.

nothing wrong with that, per se, although it saddens me that the city that was instrumental in creating hardcore music has almost no hardcore scene left. boo.

that shouldn't surprise you so much considering how much of the dischord punk scene turned to more pretentious projects within five years. that's not to say i didn't enjoy some of it, but more people's attitude has been they want to be more like fugazi than minor threat for a while. st. andrew's church had a bunch of hardcore shows. the u-turn bar had a bunch of punk shows. nyumbaru cultural center at umd had a bunch of hardcore shows. i've seen dozens of punk shows at the black cat despite the indie and dance focus. american university had a lot of good punk and hardcore shows. but a lot of that has died out.

baltimore has the sidebar and the ottobar which are both awesome, but nothing else has had any consistant permanence for good shows.

either way yeah punk is just not the cat's anymore. i was amazed to find out that macrock used to be a punk festival. it was completely indied when i went in 2003.

past few years baltimore has surpassed dc hard. the scene in baltimore rules nowadays, there are at least 3 or 4 shows a week that i find worthy of going to. when i saw the jesus lizard a few weeks ago their singer said that in previous tours DC was awesome and baltimore was meh. apparentally their DC show the nigth before ours sucked, and ours was fucking rowdy, i think i got a broken nose actually.

well undoubtedly i could see the jesus lizard play in DC to a crowd of indie losers standing there with their arms crossed, and even some going so nuts that their head starts bobbing along, but i just don't think the jesus lizard is an accurate band to judge DC vs Baltimore on. also rowdy does not necessarily mean it is better. it is hit and miss anyway. the first time i saw agent orange it was at sidebar to a packed room and everyone was going nuts. it had a great energy. next time they played at ottobar and people really didn't get into it. it seemed kind of lackluster. then i saw them down at jaxx and it didn't measure up with the first time but was better than the second time in baltimore. i've seen strike anywhere a bunch of times since 2001 and they definitely are more well received in DC than baltimore.

then again shattered faith played dc to like 10 or 15 people in dc at the velvet lounge, and people didn't seem too into it (which was a great show by the way). they didn't play baltimore, but i would suspect a similar outcome. i just concluded people don't like good punk anymore. either way if you're from around here you should go see the slickee boys whenever they play cause they probably put on the best show out of all the bands in the greater dc/baltimore area.

that's another thing, it depends on the band. i still think there is a more vibrant scene in baltimore, i think a lot of natives would agree with me. i guess i'm speaking more in terms of a diy scene. and the jesus lizard is a good band to judge it on, if you think about it, they are pretty well known and have fans of all ages, i can't really explain what it is i'm trying to say. but i think they are a good indicator because a lot of people are going to come and see them anywhere.

i should add that the show was a very friendly, drunk kind of rowdy, everyone spilling beer all over everyone else and dancing around. it was fun to punch all the the pretentious indie fuckwads with glasses and ill fitting american apparel hoodies and be guilt free.

well i don't condone punching people regardless of how lame they are. i kind of feel that the jesus lizard is a bad band to judge it on simply because of the indie hype factor (i did not know they had that wide of an age spread in fanbase). obviously (and i noticed this since day one) is the indie kids in the dc area are much more uptight than in baltimore, but there are also a lot more of them. i can't speak for overall music scenes, only a more streamlined punk and hardcore sense. it is really hard to get people to come out to a punk show in baltimore, be it at the charm city art space, ottobar, sidebar, golden west cafe, etc. without having a big name out of towner on the bill. even then i have seen some less than stellar attendance on shows that undoubtedly should have packed the room. then again i'm out of touch with music today so maybe there's this show and scene that i don't know about, but in my experiences it hasn't been anything to write home or brag about, and if it does beat out dc it is still sad.

well i'm 20, and there were kids a good but younger than me. what indie hype factor do you speak of? and there isn't a huge trad punk scene, but like i said there is a growing diy scene and a giant hardcore scene. i'm telling you, you're just not looking hard enough. and i will only condone punching hipsters and tough-guy hardcore dudes. but i'm an asshole.

i worked at a college radio station and jesus lizard was among the traditional college radio gammit. most of the people there were your run of the mill indie rock types. atleast when i first got there, everyone was well familiar with the touch and go catalog. people who sided more with pere ubu than the dead boys at the rocket from the tombs split up so to speak. i had met a million of them in dc. it's much more the art/noise/(and awful term)post-punk side of punk and all that. maybe indie kids are different now, but from 2002 through 2006 i got to hear every year from new people about how great the same bands were. i use the term indie because it is basically what became of the label alternative in the 90s. i hope that makes sense on my views of the jesus lizard.

i never got into the "diy scene" thing. i don't need to run on my own smugness, and i have put out a handful of releases completely on my own in the most diy cut paste photocopy machine sort of way. i've always found it to be very cliqueish as well. i never got into much post 80s hardcore. for me a lot of it got too homogenized, especially the vocals. the urgency was gone with most bands and replaced by a i'm "tough and angry" voice. i'm not much the fan of mathcore, or metalcore, or grind, or blastcore any of the millions of subdivisions that came out of hardcore. also getting older i found more of the beauty of a melody above the heavyness of it all. but you will see me at the upcoming negative approach and dri shows in baltimore.

i'll admit you have valid oppinons, and are probably a lot older and more knowledgeable than i. i just think that diy is pretty much the only way to go these days, or at least where you're most likely to succeed. we sort of are on opposite ends of the fence here, i mostly like extreme/ specific sub-genres, but not out of posturing honestly. i live on a farm most of the time, there's no one to pose for. i enjoy melody immensely, but not in my hardcore, i like it pissed, dingy, ect. i have a great respect for the old guard, they are basically responsible for everything i like, but the actual music doesn't really do anything for me.
