Silverstein to perform all four albums live in March

Burlington, Ontario's Silverstein will perform their entire four album catalog over four nights at the Toronto's famed El Mocambo club this March. 2003's When Broken is Easily Fixed, 2005's Discovering The Waterfront, 2007's Arrivals & Departures, and 2009's A Shipwreck In The Sand will be spotlighted on March 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st respectively. Each night will feature the record from start to finish followed by an encore that features fan favourites, rare songs, and requests from their entire discography.

This whole "playing an entire album live" thing is odd to me. It seems like a pretty recent development, but I don't really understand it. You want to hear the record, listen to the record. There's a reason that live shows are tracked differently than albums.

That said, Devo performing "Q: Are We Not Men" in its entirety was one of the greatest shows I've ever been to. THAT said, them performing "Freedom of Choice" in its entirety? Not so much. There are some (read: many) songs that just don't need to be played live.

Sometimes it's also about the promise of songs they WON'T play. It's not just that the Alkaline Trio was playing Goddammit all the way through - it also had to do with them saying without words "hey, no songs off Crimson tonight."

Devo perfoming Q: Are We Not Men in it's entirety sounded awesome, until I saw the show was $45 before ticketmaster reaming. That's about a dollar a minute to hear that album. As much of a fan I am of the album, I didn't have that kind of money to drop at the time. I'd hope it was cheaper where you were. It was less than that to see the Zero Boys play their entire 80s output and a song or two off of Make It Stop two nights in a row.

Nah, I don't remember exactly how much the tickets were but it was definitely around $200 for my girlfriend and I for both nights. I regret the second night (Freedom of Choice; they had significantly less energy/stage presence that night for some reason) but not the first. They played "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA" as an encore which, to me, would have been worth $50 in itself. There aren't many bands I'd pay more than twenty bucks to see, but Devo is definitely one of them. (plus I caught Mark Mothersbaugh's 3-DEVO glasses and will cherish them forever)

smart patrol/mr dna is killer, though 50 is still steep. the 3-DEVO glasses sound like they may be worth however. if you want to drop a lot of money on a crazy show, go see little richard. it ran me damn near $100, and he couldn't walk cause he needs a hip replacement, but man what an entertainer! definitely made me realized how big of an influence he was on Prince.

For me and my girlfriend to see Propagandhi, it was about 60 dollars because of tickemaster bullshit. I was pissed. And I bought the record for 20 bucks only to find it in Hot Topic for 15. I was pissed even more

I sort of agree with it being a recent development, but I'd change it to read its a more popular recent development. I remember mentioning this to my father sometime ago about some other band (I think They Might Be Giants performing Flood in its entirety, which was awesome), and I asked him what he thought about this trend and he said he remembers Neil Young doing the same thing a couple decades ago. And I'm sure some artists did it in the distant past. But I think its gaining popularity nowadays, especially in this music landscape that sees bands that twenty years ago probably would not have ever reached a level to do such that can do it now. I mean, would a band like Silverstein really sell as many records as they did without Myspace and Purevolume (as key players that is)? Probably not. So no one, not even their hometown, would give them a chance to play one record, let

Plus, something to note, how many of these bands built an entire tour around one album (like Alkaline Trio did)? Most of the time its just a one time deal in the bands' hometown (easy names to drop: Boys Night Out, Thursday, Motion City Soundtrack, NOFX (not sure if they played those in their hometown)).

Still, you have to question the motive behind it? I mean, personally, I would do it. If I were Brendan Kelly, I would totally do one show (in Chicago presumably) and play Broken Star. Or, if I were Mike Kinsella, I would play one more American Football show (playing all their material). But I'm neither Brendan Kelly nor Mike Kinsella, nor a professional musician with that level of success either. I understand why they don't want to. But to those that do: is it an easy money gamble, or do they want one last hurray from a beloved record? Or are they really trying to give back? Is it some way of saying goodbye? I guess you just hope its honest...

I don't think its bad for bands to do this but I think there is a right time and place for this. and the right bands.

I dont want want to defend anybody, but Coheed and Cambria played all their albums live and it was amazing, why? because the records tell a story. So idk its just something that made sense to do. I dont know if Silverstein has the same thing going on but idk.

I still think real fans will find enjoyment in it.
