As much as I enjoy South Park, that episode and their attempt to make the use of the word "fag" as acceptable was bloody awful. Insisting that something means something different to the accepted colloquialism til you go blue in the face does not change the definition of a homophobic slur, or any word. At all.

I mean, I could decide that I'm going to use the n-bomb in place of "smelly dude" tomorrow, and it wouldn't change the definition of the word in the slightest. I could get a small group of friends to use it too, and it would still be a highly offensive racial slur. I could even make a tv show about it, and it wouldn't change a damn thing, because hey, that's not how it works. So don't go thinking that South Park gave you a get out of jail free card. Stop calling people fags.

I think the point they were trying to make is that its colloquial use has itself changed. When I hear the word, 9.5 times out of 10 it has nothing to do with degrading homosexuals. That said, I don't use it both because some people get all bent out of shape, and because it's grossly over-used really to the point of having lost all meaning.

But isn't that the nature of a lot/most colloquialisms though? Especially one that when I hear it used, is still fairly synonymous with negative homophobic connotations i.e. stop crying at bambi, you fag or an appletini is a fag's drink. I mean, the way I see it, the whole reason it's become so prevalent as an insult is precisely because it's homophobic, and I don't think it's possible to dissasociate a word like that from its most recent colloquial use, especially when they're still using it as an insult (even if the intent isn't necessarily to be homophobic).
