Media: Cheap Girls: "Communication Blues"

Rise Records has posted "Communication Blues," a new track by Cheap Girls. The song will be on their upcoming record, the Tom Gabel-produced Giant Orange, due out on February 21st. The album follows up 2009's My Roaring 20's. Cheap Girls also recently released "Ruby" for free download on Rolling Stone, which you can snag here.

I cannot even begin to understand why this band is continually applauded for writing the same watered down Smoking Popes / Lemonheads cover 500 times.

Also, what in god's name does Tom Gabel think he accomplished as a producer on this record?

All I hear is unreal amounts of over compressed instruments and maybe 3 or 4 "harmonies" if you can call Ian Graham belching into a microphone that.

Someone has got to fill me in on what I'm missing.

I would like to submit that with that comment I'm not trying to ruffle anyones feathers on here. I have the utmost respect for this web site and community that supports it. I'm genuinely interested in why anyone should give a good god damn about this band and their homage to a genre that lived and died a slow miserable death a decade ago. Especially from a group of people such as yourselves who have continually "shat on" / held your contemporaries with high regard and have subjected their art to insane amounts of scrutiny in the past.

i haven't listened to these guys before, so i gave the song a shot. i think it's all right. it doesn't jump out at me, but it's pretty pleasant. i definitely wouldn't praise them up the ying-yang, but i could see listening to them when i was in the right mood.

They can write a hook like nobody's business, and I love Ian's voice, even though he may not technically be a "Great singer". They're playing a style that's been done plenty of times over, but in my opinion they're doing just as well or even better than most of those bands did in their prime. I can't think of anything bad to say about them.

hahaha, Pope....."they can write a hook like nobody's business" what the fart are you talking about? this song (and all the others i've heard by this DREADFUL band) is completely devoid of hooks. if these guys have what you call "hooks" then i'd HATE to see what else is in your music collection.......The Locust??? they're really catchy too huh?

Well you've just made the argument that their singer is sub par and they hold very little artistic integrity by clearly being recycled artists. I suppose they haven't been subjected to six figure recording contracts that buried their career JUST yet but let's just be fair and hold out hope! Glad you couldn't think of anything bad to say about them.

Even though I strongly disagree with your position on Cheap Girls, I feel like I should thank you for mentioning the Smoking Popes, because that made me pull out Destination Failure. Fuck, that record is incredible.

nobody told me to like it. i kinda do, but that's cause i listened to it and liked it. i hated Wugazi. amd i think i might be the only person on the planet to feel that way.

I like this band because I like Ian's voice and song writing, same as I liked The Van Ermans, their band before Cheap Girls.

I think angryderek's got nothing to do with his time. Regardless, I totally understand where you're coming from, however, I love this band. Voice is great and they just seem to have some x-factor I love in their sound that I can't put my finger on. I always found it itneresting how simple their songs seem, however, they still attract me so strongly. I can always identify a cheap girls song when I hear one.
