Videos: Crusades: “Attic”

Ottawa punk rockers Crusades have released a video for their song "Attic." The song appears on their 2011 album, The Sun Is Down and The Night is Riding In.

I really liked this band on first listen and I still really like a couple of songs (Driven & Beacons). However, the same-ness of the songs really got me burnt out on the whole album after only a couple of listens. They throw in some intros an stuff to change it up, but the meat of songs don't have enough variation to keep me interested.

I have been listening to this record since last summer over and over. At first, the songs are indeed quite catchy, and I would agree that the homogeneity of the songs sort of make them blend together after a couple listens, but after you get past those couple of times, you start to discern the songs more and appreciate them. And holy hell are they ever catchy. Even my kids who barely speak any English sing along whenever I put it on. See them live if you have the chance, they are worth it.

I don't want to be all negative Nancy because I do like this sound, but you bring up my other gripe about this album. I really can't understand anything they are saying. I can discern a few of the choruses, but most of it is just washed away. They sound really anthemic and it's the type of music I want to sing along to, if only I knew what they were saying. This, combined with the lack of musical differentiation, just makes every song sound the same and lack it's own identity.

The LP and the CD both come with lyrics! This is a very lyrics-important band, too. There's a lot of message up in there. There are also a bunch of cool and funny quotes from some famous, less than famous and infamous people before each song. Artwork is rad, too!

I don't necessarily agree, but respect your opinion. However, if you want to hear a bunch of similar, but varried stuff you should really do yourself a favor and check out the members' other bands (past and present): The Creeps, The Visitors, Year Zero, Last Communion - all really amazing stuff and Crusades is really the culmination/intersection of all these bands.

This band made a pretty risky gamble with the whole satanic imagery and theme. However, their conviction and intensity coulpled with the atmospheric production of the record and awesome songs make it all work.
