Warped adds Rise Against, Lostprophets

Lostprophets

Warped Tour has announced an additional thirteen acts for this summer. Rise Against has top billing in the announcement but will actually only be performing at St. Louis, Detroit, Minneapolis & Kansas City. Other confirmations include Lostprophets, Sleepwalker, Taylor Thrash, June Divided, The Scissors, Neo Geo, Amyst, Emily's Army, Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide, New Empire, They All Float, and Railroad To Alaska.

The touring festival kicks off on June 16, 2012 in Salt Lake City, UT.

Lostprophets! Gods among men. One of the best bands I've never actually heard. They are so good I don't even need to listen to them, at all, ever, please.

I saw them live once with Story of the Year/MCR/Letter Kills back in the day. I'd never heard them before, and thought they were kind of cool live. Then I checked out their music, and realized my mistake.

Haha, I like MCR's old stuff, and I like Letter Kills' one album. I did like Story of the Year back then, can't stand their old stuff now except for nostalgic reasons, but like their newer stuff. If that makes any sense.

I don't know why, but when I read "Dustin Jones", I immediately thought "Dusty Hill" of ZZ Top. I saw ZZ Top at the Orange County Fair in 2010 and they kicked ASS. I'm typically ambivalent towards blues-based hard rock/heavy metal, but the Top really bring it live. I'd definitely recommend seeing them, especially with a date...nothing gets a lady's engine purring like a night of Texas-bred boogie rock. MEOW! ;D

If the Warped Tour had ZZ Top, I'd totally go. One can make a compelling argument that they're far more punx than the rest of the line-up, so...get on it, Lyman.

I won't try to claim I'm a ZZ Top *expert*, but I've listened to a fair amount of their studio albums...I don't go to see bands of whom I've only heard a couple of hit songs.

I don't really get that mentality: if you're only familiar with a handful of hit singles, why would you pay to listen to the band for a 90-120 minute set? I have to assume it's the same kind of people who spend an ENTIRE concert shouting at the band to play their one big song that they're *obviously* going to play at the end of the set. Come on, you know those people. I hate them.

Also, I basically refer to all bands I listen to as "The _____". I've had this argument before whenever I talk about my favorite albums by The Sting or The David Bowie.

Although...I guess with the older bands, there are pretty obvious expectations. I mean, you don't have to own every album by Motorhead, for example, to know exactly what kind of music you'll be hearing all night. If you like their big hit, odds are you'll mindlessly enjoy yourself for the rest of what you perceive to be identical-sounding songs.

That's just a foreign concept to me...I feel really awkward when I'm sitting through a headliner's songs I don't know (with the exception of new songs, of course). That's happened to me a few times, usually when I just come for an opener and am only mildly familiar with the headliner, and the primary thought going through my head is always "If I don't know the songs, why am even here?".

Not that I expect all bands to shape their sets around B-sides and deep cuts for the sake of weirdo fans like myself, of course. Thus is the problem with the bands of the once-famous/"county fair circuit" stature, all of their sets more or less have to be rooted in their hits. It's understandable and accessible for everyone, yes, but for the true fans, it can often be extremely irritating. Many times I've seen "classic rock" bands whose discographies I know inside and out and end up being depressed by seeing them tread out the same painfully predictable setlist every time. :/

...um...what were we talking about again?

I guess if there's any one point I'm trying to make, it's that Blue Öyster Cult needs to change their fucking setlist. "Godzilla" doesn't need to be 10 minutes long, you can fit ANYTHING else into that irritating space where ALL the band members inexplicably need to start soloing. I mean, I dunno, "Heavy Metal: The Black & Silver", "I Am the Storm", "Harvester of Eyes", "I Love the Night", etc., and that's just off the top of my head. I know that they undoubtedly make lots of cash touring the world kicking out the Greatest Hits, but is that really worth turning your back on 40 years worth of amazing material?

I have to imagine it also really drains the energy and spontaneity out of their performances. I guess you could say they're...♫GOIN' THROUGH THE MOTIONS!♫
