Eh, not really. They sound a lot like (early/prime) The Hold Steady, but with weaker songwriting and much, much weaker lyrics. It will make my top 20, but it`s unworthy of being at the very top. I also don`t get all the Husker Du comparisons they`ve been receiving.

So they sound like a meatheaded version of the Mats with no balls? When did the Mats start using anthemic backing vocals in almost every song? Listen to "The House That Heaven Built," then listen to "Constructive Summer." There are definite similarities.

This band will need to become a lot more prolific and consistent for people to be allowed to mention them in the same sentence as the Mats.

I don't know, I kind of feel like the album feels forced. Shit like Failed Olympic Bid and Cosmo's Ladder feel like he was just trying to include synth songs. They felt so natural on the first two albums. It seems like they were moving towards a sound similar to Mclusky. The songs that sound like Mclusky are the best to me, and I'm not even a Mclusky fan. That being said, I realise my opinion is in the minority.

It's funny, the problems I had initially were almost the complete opposite. I was sort of taken aback a little with how different the whole thing sounds - the thing I used to like about FOTL was the minimalism of it all. This album just feels way fuller, the lyrics are way more focussed and apparently relative (as opposed to some of the seriously cryptic and/or irrelevant stuff on Curses!).

The other weird thing is that Failed Olympic Bid and Cosmo's Ladder are, in my opinion, the most natural sounding synth songs - if only because they sound the closest to older FOTL songs. Cosmo's Ladder sounds like it could've been taken straight from Curses! (I guess it's a little Manchasm) and Failed Olympic Bid's got an industrial-edge to it that echoes Throwing Bricks at Trains.

Honestly, the only thing that kinda annoys me is the robotic vocal effect that's used in a few songs.

I agree with you on f the minimalism they used to have being somewhat abandoned. Honestly, I kind of miss Kelson. His vocals and bass lines were pretty noteworthy. Maybe it will grow on me, I'm really hoping for it.

The Pennywise album isn't horrible, but it just sounds generic. The lyrical content sounds appropriate for a younger band, but not for a band in their forties. A song from this album has come up a few times on my Ipod and I thought it was Pour Habit at first. I don't mind it that much, but If I'm going to listen to a Pennywise album I will go with Unknown Road.

I wouldn't say that was totally true, but it's not far off. Full Circle was great, but I think he may have written or co-written a bunch of those songs before he died, but Straight Ahead was pretty solid and he definitely had nothing to do with that. But everything after that was incredibly generic and boring, and Fuck Authority from Land of the Free? was one of the most embarrassingly juvenile songs they've ever written.

there is a complex algorithm involved which takes into account the mean user rating, number of people who have rated and the rating users credibility. also minus 50 points for shitty poser bands ie. make do and mend, the holy mess and plus 50 points for tru punk rockers pennywise and bouncing souls

I am back assholes, and I have found a pattern with the people who do reviews on this website. I look at their favorite records section and I realized that the editor in chief must drunk or blind when they assign review assignments (if that is the case at all?). If they like Gaslight Anthem, Saves the Day, Lifetime, and or the garbage that as slopped out of Long Island, they have no business doing a Pennywise, Death By Stereo, Bad Religion, or anything else that was huge on this site about 8 years ago. These are the dudes(or women) who make meuse the word CUNT way to much on this site. On more thing FUCK YEAH Pennywise is on top.

Well review new stuff too just keep an open mind, but once you rip it apart keep in mind the old Brokencyde (yes i said that) album title "i hate it but the kids like it" (sorry). Or how about this: do you homework on the band before you actually type anything. THat comes from the piss pour review the Death by stereo 2009 record, which was done a kid who knew dick about that band. It makes you look unprofessional.
