Media: The Darkness: “Street Spirit (Fade Out)”

UK rock outfit The Darkness have posted their cover of Radiohead's "Street Spirit (Fade Out.)" The original song comes from 1995's The Bends , and the cover will appear on the Darkness' forthcoming album, titled Hot Cakes, and due out August 20, 2012.

They've already had a fifth American Pie movie. It was "American Pie: The Naked Mile", which was after "American Pie: Band Camp". After "Naked Mile" it's "American Pie: Beta House" and then "American Pie: The Book Of Love".

Is it just me, or is it better to have a bloated but sincere hard rock band rather than a smarmy parody of bloated hard rock bands? Say what you will about bands like KISS or Poison, but I'd much rather listen to them than groups like The Darkness, since their joke grows old before the album's even finished.

I've been a KISS fan for 16 years. Technically. I officially gave up on them in 2009 once they started recording with the current line-up (i.e. Paul and Gene having given Ace and Peter the boot and hiring ex-tribute band members to wear their costumes and make-up, one of the biggest betrayals any band has pulled on their fanbase). I stuck with Ace Frehley's solo career instead. Ace is a God.

I'm not really talking about radio singles or anything. If I wanted to listen to cheesy hard rock, I'd rather listen to Bon Jovi than a group trying to parody Bon Jovi. I can't imagine the latter has much replay value in the long run.

Oh righto, I haven't heard KISS apart from the radio singles.
I'm not sure these guys are trying to parody anyone or if they're just writing fun rock tunes.
Either way I'd rather listen to these guys than whatever pop diva is playing on the radio right now.

Dude, KISS' early albums are legendary. Love them or hate them, I think everyone should listen to 'Alive!' or 'Destroyer' or 'Love Gun' if only because of their indelible impact on 1970s pop culture.

The Darkness isn't parodying anyone in particular, but they're definitely satirizing the theatrical hard rock pomposity of the era. Either way, their schtick gets old quick and the singer's voice gets on my nerves. If I have to listen to any band lampooning the campy machismo of yesteryear's arena rock, I'll stick with Electric Six, thank you.

I can tolerate Foxy Shazam, but I don't like any of it, to be honest. Steel Panther, of course, lies at the far end of the annoyance spectrum for being an outright novelty band, but I'm immediately skeptical of any contemporary outfit flaunting bombastic neo-arena rock and pseudo-Mercury frontmen. Whether earnest or satirical, it just comes across as phony and contrived, a smirking anachronism that wears out its welcome fast. I see bands like The Darkness as having about as much substance or authenticity as a retro-swing band.

I'll take these guys over anything KISS made in the 80s (and onward for that matter), Foxy Shazam over anything Poison ever made, and Buckcherry over, i don't know, anything Faster Pussycat put out that wasn't that one good album they had. The reason glam is still somewhat alive is that even back then glam bands were smarmy parodies of bloated hard rock bands. It worked for them back then it can work for them now.

I can't help but feel that today's "glam" scene is driven mostly by irony rather than the actual music. Glam rock and glam metal were very much products of their time both in music and fashion, and to straightforwardly revive it in the 21st century seems more like a novelty nostalgia trip than an earnest attempt at reviving the music, if only because these new bands seem to emphasize and exaggerate the flamboyancy and mock pomposity above all else. It just seems like one big joke. I find it hard to believe that fans of The Darkness or Foxy Shazam would honestly rank them in the same league as Poison or Van Halen, or vice versa. In fact, I'd find it hard to believe there's even much fan crossover between the two.

When was glam driven by the actual music? Sure the music was the product of its time, but It was always about flamboyancy and mock. It got old and lost most of its shock value as an inevitable consequence of time, partly because the music wasn't anything that could be further developed to adapt with time (recent notable failures in this domain include 'glamcore'). So of course there was going to be a revival at some point, and whatever the motives, i don't see the sense in dismissing the newer bands (fanboyhood aside) because they're essentially making the same kind of music as the older ones, and it does not lack in quality any more than most glam rock and metal. I'll take the best of KISS and Van Halen over most existing music any day, and i still consider The Darkness's 'Permission to Land' a modern classic in the genre, comparable to some of the best records of the glam era.

Far and away my favorite Radiohead album and my second favorite song on said album behind "Just". While I'm not a fan of the cover, I'm at least happy they (The Darkness) picked an underrated song and didn't just recreate it.

Still, "The Bends" is the shit.

I saw these guys in Chicago earlier this year. It was freaking incredible. They put on a hell of a show, and they're phenomenal musicians.
