Blink-182 release T-shirt for Hurricane Sandy relief

Blink-182 are doing their part to pitch in to the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts; the band has begun selling an "East Coast Pride" t-shirt, and will be giving 100% of the profits to the Red Cross.

I'm with him. They DO profit from it in a significant way -- it's free self-promotion. I'm guessing the income will also go to pay off the production of the shirts, which would mean the band themselves are losing nothing from this, only gaining.

Shit like this always pisses me off. They're multi-millionaires. Give a giant stack of cash out of your own pockets, and if you feel the need to go public about it, encourage OTHER millionaires to do the same.

To be fair, nowhere in the story does it say these guys didn't donate a significant amount of money in private.

Also, you're right. This is free self-promotion, and the cost of the shirts is probably included in the price. However, I'd be willing to bet the people who the proceeds are going to help aren't too pissed about that, considering they've got bigger problems to address.

The argument would be that if $4 from a $25 shirt is going to relief, it would be more productive for Blink to urge their fans to borrow money from mom and dad and donate directly instead of wasting 5/6 of their cash on production costs and overhead. Why not shill a different trinket, like copies of existing records or fucking bumper stickers or something? Oh wait, because shirts (which have a giant Blink rabbit on them) make your dopey fans into free walking billboards. AND you get to play humanitarian. Win/win. Buzzmedia. Multihomed interconnectedness. Paradigm.

In a perfect world that works. But people aren't willing to give away money to things they perceive as free. People want to get something physical for their money. And helping people doesn't give them anything physical. Like MP3's. So in order to support people they need a shirt in return. By giving them a shirt more money will be made. Helping people isn't enough. People need shirts. It's a fact. Thats why green peace has shirts. Thats why Amnesty international gives christmas cards away. Because people don't spend money on anything unless it can be held physically.

Amnesty and Greenpeace are NPOs and the cost of producing and distributing shirts is part of their fundraising overhead, you fucking retard. It's very different. They're getting all sorts of tax breaks and production cost cuts as a result. It's very different in this case.

On your other point, note that I suggested OTHER trinkets they could give out to make people feel special that don't involve unnecessarily pissing away the vast majority of money spent by "donors." Are you telling me if these dopes signed pieces of toilet paper and sold those they wouldn't do better than shirts? Bullshit.

The only way this isn't cynical and exploitative is if they're eating the production costs. Cereal.

Also this way they get a shirt for their band and bragging rights that they helped people. SO they can take a facebook picture of them duckfacing in their charity shirt. Instead of showing a receipt to redcross. SO there is that motivation. While they may not make as much per donation. They[ll make more in general.
