Reel Big Fish have unveiled a new music video, for their song "Don't Stop Skankin'." The song appears on their latest album, last year's Candy Coated Fury .

A lot of people haven't, nor have they 'Citizen Kane', 'Lawrence of Arabia', etc.. Of the many movies bandying around the title of the "greatest ever", 'Casablanca''s the only one I find the most immediately engaging and entertaining, or at least watchable for reasons other than "I'm watching this only because people say it's the greatest movie ever made".

It truly is a magical movie experience, a pinnacle of the art of cinema, and it rests comfortably next to 'Castle Freak' in my DVD collection.

Since I guess people were expecting me to go off on some kind of rant, I gave it a shot and ended up writing one of my longest-ever diatribes before I realized it sucked and I deleted it. However, I will keep this snippet:

"This video is dreadful, this song is dreadful, these lyrics are dreadful...the mere concept of its existence is a horror almost Lovecraftian in the sense of how it brings me ever so closer to the brink of incurable insanity. To look directly at this music video for any extended period of time would likely produce physiological effects not entirely dissimilar to staring into the Ark of the Covenant. It is not entirely hyperbolic to suggest that prolonged exposure to the vibrations of sound emanating from this song will have such a catastrophic impact on your organs' natural functions that violently death is medically assured within less than two plays.

And, while you're lying in a bloody heap on the ground, blind from the bursting capillaries in your eyeballs, wrapped up tightly in your own intestinal tract after it forcefully ejected itself from your anus looking in vain for any chance of escape, as you pray for the clammy release of death to alleviate you from the most intense agony you've ever experienced in your short life...do you really want the last words you hear as a living organism to be "Don't Stop Skankin'"?".

Seriously, though, why are self-referential songs seemingly okay only in ska? What if a punk band released a song called "Don't Stop Punkin'"? I dunno, I guess I just don't get it. Oh well.

Funk doesn't count, that's a whole other ballgame. I think the P-Funk mythology makes it abundantly clear that "the Funk" is far more than just a genre. Unlike "the ska", which was merely conceived as a dance, the Funk is a philosophy, a spirituality, something that lies dormant in all of us until we reach an enlightened enough plane of thought to let our freak flags fly.

That's pretty much the point. Why is it okay in ska music? And I mean, like, rampant puns, not using the word in a proper context like "Do the Ska", "Jamaica Ska", etc. but, like, "skawesome" and "Skankeriffic" and whatnot. That almost seems to be a prerequisite for both ska fans and bands, and I really don't get it because it's never, EVER clever or enjoyable and is pretty much the biggest target of ridicule for the genre.

I found the women in this video attractive. Except the really short-haired blonde girl.

It has a very swing-y sound to it. But I still liked it.

This is way better (song and video) than the terrible Brown Eyed Girl non-sense posted earlier.
