Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: Why do you guys post news stories every time a shitty mainstream band member farts, yet some awesome bands aren't even mentioned on your website?

A I can understand that concern. We definitely do try to post stuff when "bigger bands" put out records or something happens centered around them. The fact is, although not everyone likes, say Weezer, a very large percentage of our readers do, compared to a smaller independent band, such as say, Rats in the Wall or The Omegas. By posting about larger bands, we run less of a risk of making Punknews an introverted publication, like some other publications, that only want "people that agree with everything that it posts." If anything, punknews is dedicated to being an open format for music and ideas, and is not interested in saying what is or is not "punk." Plus, a lot of people got into punk through the bigger bands, so if Green Day acts as a gateway to Rudimentary Peni, I'm all for it.

I do have to disagree with the opinion that we don't post about smaller bands. If you scroll though our archives, you'll see lots of coverage of smaller bands. In fact, I've been criticized for covering smaller bands too much… damned if you do, damned if you don't. We like to keep it a mix of coverage of larger and small bands. Punknews isn't going to cover ONLY small bands nor is it going to cover ONLY big bands.

That being said, we don't cover ALL smaller bands, because there are quite simply too many small bands to post about every band- especially if our editors don't know about them.

If you want a specific band to get more coverage at Punknews, the solution is simple- Write reviews and submit news items. Reviews are probably more likely to run, but news items might run, too. The more reviews of a band that run, the more likely news editors are to pay attention to it.

Also, if you want a band to get coverage- Interview them! Here's how you can get one of your favorite bands covered at punknews:

Want to write a review? Submit it here
Want to do an interview?: E-mail Kira@punnkews.org or Britt@punknews.org BEFORE doing the interview.
Want to submit a news item: Right here
