Voodoo Glow Skulls / Ten Foot Pole / Digger / River City Rebelslive in Long Island, NY (2002)Tours Reviewer Rating: User Rating: Contributed by: rage (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on July 19th 2002
After spending nearly an entire summer up in New York City I was extremely disappointed having only seen one show and when I heard about the Victory Records tour hitting Long Island near where I worked, I was totally psyched. For some reason the show started at the ungodly hour of 5pm on a Monday night so I took off work early and hopped the train to Rockville Centre and walked around the Mayberry-like town for a few hours. It took me that long to find the venue because no one in town seemed to know where it was, which made sense once I found it because it is literally a hole in the wall, without a sign or anything, but the line of punk kids outside the door tipped me off. As I sized up the ‘competition’ I noticed that I was by far the oldest person there, with most of the people in line ranging from 12-17 in age, and I was weighing in at 21. The usual pre-show mischief was taking place as everyone was eagerly anticipating such huge bands coming to this small Long Island town. Please login or register to post comments. to response to the kid who thinks im in the band. I am not and im just supporting a local band who's music I happen to really enjoy and am happy to see their name getting out. in response to "they should stop talking smack and just play their music".. in response to "they should stop talking smack and just play their music".. sounds like the last guy is in highschoolfootaballheroes... kind of a shamless plug. oh well. its always a great show with vgs and rcr. Awesome review. Ska is alive and rockin! Definately an awesome show, I would advise checking those bands out. Victory Records bands kick ass. And I believe local punk/ska band the HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL HEROES were mentioned. Sounds like RCR are fans of them. Seems like everyone is. I would definately recommend checking this band out. the reason you didn't recognize the guys in digger is because the singer is the only original member left. the rest of the band are all like 19. they're cool guys though. I remember seeing River City Rebels with Big D and The Kids Table and the lead singer said something to the extent of "Who likes George Bush? Cause that guy is fucking stupid" and he then ragged on George Dubya some more before I yelled "Hey stop it, I love George Bush!".. I saw VGS when they came to my city (i always catch them when they come to town) and they always ALWAYS put on a fucking great show!! and we're talking less than 50 people at the venue but they always give 100 percent no matter how many people show up...and its always the best 12 bucks spent when it comes to these guys! keep up the good work! (a little sad that they aint on epitaph anymore but i know its about the music not the lable) river city rebels are really good. horns rock = rockin' rock i actually live in rockville centre. the venue backstreet blues is a tiny room underground which is probably the size of an apartment. its hot as hell, the roof is low, and the toilet always overflows. i attempted to see taking back sunday there once and it was the most violent thing ive ever seen you couldnt hear the lead singers voice because people were jumping on the stage singing . dont recommend this place but its cool to have popular bands play in my town To anonymous: Good review...I just don't understand how the show was in a "small Long Island town" or however it was said when the place has over 3 million people living in it So yeah, i saw this tour is Syracuse. Amazing show, even with the shitty turnout. When digger took the stage they spoke of needing a place to stay, so i offered up my house for them. And they stayed at my place, it was a really cool experience. If you ever get a chance to check their live show, or get an album, do it! They are all super nice, and way better than the majority of any bands out there today. I mean, sure its poppy, but they do pop with class. To anonymous: Question : Did TFP played some new songs ? ok, this is a decent review, but it's been 5 years since TFP was a 5-piece. And their old singer sings for Pulley, he doesn't play guitar for TFP. Very nice review. :) I went to this show here in Chicago and the crowd gave the same exact reaction. Only me and like maybe 5 other people in my sight actually liked Digger. Haha, the singer of River City Rebels decided to pull down his pants and underwear and dance around. That was interesting to say the least. hahaha.. I thought it was a good show all in all. And yeah, i agree about the crowd being young... lots of 12 year olds with mohawks. Good review. Too bad when they come to Houston next Saturday it'll be Ten foot Pole,Voo doo Glow Skulls,Kissfits, and Scrimmage Heroes. No RCR,a very good band live.I probably won't go though, cause I'm going to Less Than Jake,Guttermouth,Whippersnapper, and Dynamite Boy,then the next day I'm going to Taking Back Sunday,Brand New,Rufio, and Imposters. So I don't know if I'll be able to go,but I might skip TBS,and go to this, anyone know anything about the Kissfits and Scrimmage Heroes, are they good ? As I said in the review, this is my first time seeing them so I don't really have anything to compare him to. I assumed this was their original singer because he was definately awesome and was the driving point of their performance. He seemed like it was natural for him to be working with the rest of the band, so in answer to your question: yes the new singer is great :P I wanted to go in RVA last night...How is the new RCR singer? i wanted to see this tour when it came through chicago so badly... i couldnt get off work, so i missed it. sounds like i missed a hell of a show too. goddammit i hate my job well done, one of the best live reviews i've seen. | Features
