The Short Review: If you consider yourself a fan of what we are now calling "Emo", then buy this album. Go... now.

The Long Review: Imagine you´re there. It´s 1984 and harDCore is an shambles. Minor Threat and Faith have broken up, and Bad Brains are just kinda... there. Posuers looking for a reason to beat up kids are flooding the shows and violence is raging. What do you do. If you happen to be Guy Piccotto, Mike Fellows, Brendan Canty, and Eddie Janney, you create a whole different scene.

This is it, the one you´ve heard all those older looking dudes at the record store talking about when you ask them if they like the Get Up Kids. Each song on this record wrote the book on what we are now pathetically refering to as "Emo" (according to Spin, Emo is basically every type of guitar based music released these days). Listen as Guy Piccotto shreds his larnyx on gems such "Spring", "Remainder", "All There Is", and "Persistent Vision". Listen as the band collectively shreds their instruments on songs like "For Want Of" and "Other Way Around". And listen as the next 15 years of cutting edge punk rock is foretold in the blistering "End on End".

Leave your Vagrant punk schlock on the ground kiddies, run, don´t walk to the record store and buy this album. It is emo, even if I hate that title, it is so emotionally draining that it will leave you exhuasted for the next 4 to 5 days.

"And if Summer Left you dry, with nothing left to try, this time"
- "Spring"

I love this album. As it's one of the few records I can listen to the whole way through without getting bored it deserves a high rating.

It's good. But, I don't think it's as good as people make it out to be. Sure, it did inspire a whole genre of music and if we were talking about ground breaking albums then yes, this gets a 10. But from a stance of just the music, it's jsut ok. The ebst part is that there is so much energy behind it. I just don't think it's as amazing as people make it out to be.

Where the fuck do people get the idea that this release is called "End on End"?

    Archangel (January 31, 2005)

Not as emotionally draining as this review states... but a fucking amazing discograhy anyway. I recommend it to everyone.

didn't leave me drained for 4-5 days. you're just a pussy.

i wanna talk like im talking to myself!

emo, hardcore, punk, rock and roll. whatever the fuck you want to call this, it doesnt matter. so much energy, so much tension, angst, love, hate and brutal honesty you don't know whether these guys are going to burst into tears or burst into flames from dumping so much of themselves into every one of these songs. really crazily great stuff. the recording sounds like the last minor threat 7" but louder and with clearer drums, everything is pretty fast on here, a little sloppy but it works in a great way. fucking awesome, i cant say enough good stuff about this record. guy piccioto wails like a madman, and the lyric sheet that comes with the CD shows him laying face down on stage, kicking fans in the face as he swings his guitar around and jumping out of a tree. the reissue has the original ROS lp (plus one GREAT song they couldn't fit) and their '87 ep "All Through A Life". the four EP songs are excellent in their own way, although not much like the earlier stuff at all. the sound more along the lines of the One Last Wish album which was pretty much the same band as this. anyway, enough rambling. you need to go buy this and listen to it until you puke and want to pick up a guitar and swing it around your head and kick people in the face too.

Classic piece of work. I don't even know if words can express the greatness of this record. In a word: Essential. Priceless. Wonderful. I'm sure people get tired of hearing about this "being the foundation of....such and such" or worse, being labelled as "blah-tional rock" though the very purpose of this band was to break such norms the cages they build.

Good record and a great review.

This album is one of the best that I own. I can't believe I acctually found it in good condtion and where i work, so I got it for free.

Oh my goodness, I am SO glad somebody reviewed this.

    THIS is emo.

The song "End On End" is so good it hurts. Though I gotta disagree with your comment about Bad Brains, they were as vital as ever in '84.

Great band, one of the first emo bands along with Ian's Embrace. And, of course, the frontman from both these bands went on to share frontman duties in Fugazi. Rites Of Spring's drummer, Brendan Canty, went on to Fugazi too. That being said, Rites of Spring was a lot better than Embrace, but Fugazi rocks them both.

fuck yeah, been waiting for a review of this on punknews.org, and this one doesnt disappoint. This is the kind of album that doesnt need a detailed review, just a simple "buy" command.

I've always loved the irony that although Rites of Spring is a move away from the "traditional" DC scene, in doing so it embodies punk. Personally, this makes me feel punker than Black Flag does, more emotional than Dashboard Confessional does and as inspired as Bad Religion.
