| Strung Out / Rise Against / Audio Karate / Linelive in Portland, OR2002 live show Review by: ElVaquero See others by this writer Only registered users can post comments Published on August 9th 2002
My brother and I had come up to Portland to see a couple shows at the Crystal Ballroom, which is just an excellent venue for any type of concert, and this is basically the only place in town for Punk Rock concerts, at least in the past few years. I was pretty excited to see Strung Out as I had really gotten into them in the past six months or so and was pumped to hear all of my favorites performed by Jason and crew. As to the other bands, I really didn't know that much; I had heard one Rise Against song, from Live Fat Die Young (Fat Wreck's fifth compilation), and thought it was pretty good, other than that though, I had pretty much no idea about this young band other than their melodic hardcore stylings. I had seen the Audio Karate video for Nintendo 89 and was generally pretty unimpressed; so far as the Line go, I had never heard of them before, and really wasn't too interested in checking them out.

Audio Karte doesn't suck at all. Despite the fact that they are the pop-punk and play that material. They posess talent wgich isn't aqquired by just anyone. Listen to one day, and nintendo 89 is the best. Who Cares Who's On What Label. And by the way, without Epitaph (Thanks Brett) and Bad Religion, all of the bands you love wouldn't be around. All of you young kids just don't get it, Enjoy the music quit bitching!!!! these bands arent close to punk they are pop why are they here they are not welcome You must be hiding under a rock if you think the Crystal is the best place to see a show in Portland. Come on now. The best places to see shows are the Meow Meow, Aladdin, B-Complex and the Paris. The Roseland is okay if I want to see a big band... but the Crystal Ballroom? Seriously dude, that place is WEAK. I try to avoid going there at all costs. "your home town sucks!" to which the lead singer's only response was, "you think our home town sucks? um, ok." Hey, uh, this is my review and just to respond: the Crystal does get more good shows than pretty much anywhere else, I'm not exactly saying it's better. But, it is a damn good place to see a concert, I think the acoustics are pretty good, every word was pretty audible, and it all sounded tight as hell. Oh, yeah, the floors are supposed to be bouncy, there are ball bearings underneath the floor so they can control how bouncy it is. So, say, if there was a punk show where there would be much anticipated bouncing, they could bump it up and make it a lot easier to mosh. It's cool. The Meow Meow is definitely the best punk venue in town, but if you think the Roseland is better than the Crystal...buddy you're dreaming. Besides, everyone knows that the Aladdin Theater is the best venue in town, it did used to be a porno joint after all. I saw this tour in vancouver, and rise against took this show by far. Snapcase sucked. They were one of the worst bands i have ever seen. It makes me want to puke just thinking about it. All the macho retards in the pit didnt help much either. Epithaph is not punk becuz majer lables r not punk!!! Strung Out is a good band. They're on Fat Wreck & Fat Mike owns fat wreck, he's in NOFX which is on epitaph which is 51% owned by warner bros. I heard that somewhere. Good review but buddy, you obviously don't live in Portland or go to that many shows. You think that the Crystal Ballroom is a good place for concerts and basically the only place for a punk show??? Are you fuckin nuts?? Crystal Ballroom is exactly that, a ballroom. The sound sucks, the floors are bouncy, and the place is HUGE. Next time try going to Pine Street Theatre, B-Complex, Meow Meow(best club in Portland), or even the horrable Roseland theatre. Any place is better than Crystal Ballroom. Ohh and yeah this was a mediocre show at best Jason wasn't wearing eye shadow, he was wearing liquid eye liner. :) Its sad that guys can apply makeup better than I can. Just watched the Line/Rise Against/Snapcase/Strung Out show in Kelowna. A great show indeed. I effin love Rise Against. I was there for Rise Against (in seattle, at least) and holy fucking shit they were awesome. I don't like Strung Out much, but this show gets a goddamn 5 star rating for RA. |
