"Hi kids! We're the Break! We're here to play cut rate punk rock with pseudo-anthematic lyrics and a singer who steals his voice straight from Chamberlain! Like us, please!"

This little blurb honestly sums up this band perfectly. There is absolutely nothing special about this group [unless you were a fan of Radar Mercury, who 4/5s of this band were in prior]. Their songs are bland and repetitive, and have no edge to them at all. This is the kind of punk rock that girls who wear "Boys Lie" shirts wear, and ironically the music imitates those girls - fat, ugly, and no personality.

The singer sounds like he's been listening to Chamberlain's "The Moon My Saddle" a little too much, as he's swiped David's vocal style almost perfectly. To make things even more scarier, he starts to sound like Matchbox 20's crooner, Rob Thomas, on some of the tracks. Blah.

Download the first MP3 below, it's the best song off the album. After that, just stay away from this with a ten foot pole.

Wow!! Great!!

I have to agree with Scott on this one. Not bad, but just boring. This is the kind of CD you listen to once and then forget about for a few months until you find it in the case of another CD. Usually though, it's not the CD you were hoping to find.

Anonymous (December 30, 2002)

Punk music, in most of it's many forms, has NEVER been considered original - how fucking original can you be when all you do is play three chords and sing the same songs over and over?

That being said, you really have no basis comparing this band to another considering every band sounds exactly the same as the other on one level or another.

This album is enjoyable as long as you don't hold the pretenses that dicklicker Scott held being the 'elite' punk flamer that he is. Don't listen to this douchebag, and figure it out for yourself.

Yea, the break may suck Scott, but at least they're making a little bit of money for it. You, on the other hand, are busy suckin it for free!!

I know Gameface's history. I own their entire catalog, except the newest CD. I think the band really hit their sound with "Every Last Time," [actually I think they hit it with the "Cupcakes" EP] so I wouldn't compare the Break to present-day Gameface. I can see how you might compare them to old Gameface, but old Gameface was pretty bad, in my opinion.

The fact of the matter is, the Break still sucks.

gameface released a slew of 7" and comp tracks, two full-lengths ( one 7" and comp track compilation), and two EPs prior to "Every Last Time" and yes they do sound quite a bit like the break.

maverick (August 28, 2002)

They sound *nothing* like Gameface, at least not more recent Gameface ["Every Last Time" on].

As for Chamberlain, I simply said that I thought the vocalist sounded like David from Chamberlain. I was in no way comparing the band musically to Chamberlain.

Trust me, I know Chamberlain is better than the Break.

don't compare this to gameface?

i'm sorry, but scott you shouldn't even be writing reviews if you can see the similarity in sound between the break and gameface.

and speaking of gameface...don't compare the break to gameface? i'm sorry, but you've made a terrible terrible terrible mistake comparing the break to chamberlain. as much as i love and as good as gameface is, chamberlain is and always will be eons better than them...so don't compare gameface to the break? no, you shouldn't be comparing chamberlain to the break.

i understand people write bad reviews...but this is horrendous. i can understand that you may not like this band but you have no right to compare them with bands that sound nothing like them...if you do think the break sounds like the bands you compared them with then you shouldn't even be writing reviews for punk records.

in my eyes you've destroyed all credibility with this shoddy review and the comments that you have followed with.

Don't compare them to Gameface.

Gameface is *eons* better than this.

this is such a great record. the only thing i don't like about it is the sound of the guitars on the recording. but the melodic style and vocals are right on. i suggest to any one who enjoys non-"run of the mill" punk rock...people who are into samiam, farside, and gameface will dig this.

This message board amuses me to no end sometimes.

I saw the Break with the Lawrence Arms and I honestly don't like them. I'm not saying they're bad, but they just bored me. I really don't think the singer has that great a voice either.

If you guys want to buy me some old Face To Face or Dag Nasty albums, email me and I'll give you my mailing address.

Otherwise, suck a dick.

Anonymous (August 23, 2002)

He doesn't even own any old Face to Face for that matter.

Anonymous (August 23, 2002)

Scott, you gotta be kidding? Oh well the review is coming from a guy who works for a punk website but doesn't own any old Dag Nasty albums. So you can't hold his opinions too highly anyway.

SOYBOMB (August 23, 2002)

I saw them open for Lawrence Arms at the Knitting Factory.. They weren't that good, but I wouldn't consider them horrible.

Peace,

Good mini-review to the guy below...You summed them up pretty well.

-sickboi

Anonymous (August 23, 2002)

hmm...

the writer of this review is an idiot. this album is easily is easily in my top tier of releases of 2002. it's not supposed to complicated and technical punk rock. it's supposed to be straight-ahead, vocally-guided, extremely rockin' power pop / punk...which it pulls off with nearly flawless results.

the vocals sound absolutely nothing like david moore from Chamberlain (at any point in their music...split lip included) and even less like the guy from matchbox 20. i mean, the fact that you even compare him to david moore proves that you don't listen to a wide-enough spectrum of music. the vocals are a dead ringer of Errortype:11 with just a touch of jason beebout (Samiam) and chad price (ALL). the vocals carry the band...he has one of the strongest voices i've heard from a frontman in a long long time.

in my eyes, the music is reminiscent of Hagfish...which was one of the greatest pop-punk bands of all time. it's 3 and 4 chord punk rock...many of which are over-used, but The Break stands out because the way they approach everything is fresh...especially in a world where drive-thru bands are praised for their cookie-cutter sound...this band really stands above the rest.

(this is an anonymous message because i'm too lazy to set up an account. if you really care my name is adam and you can e-mail me if you go to http://www.projectbottlecap.com.)

I definately think this is one of the years best releases. Anyone who appreciates Samiam, Divit, or Lonely Kings should definately check this band out. They are incredible despite whatever Scott says.

Anonymous (August 23, 2002)

Oooh Scott...do you have a personal vendetta against these guys? I saw them open for Strike Anywhere and thought they were pretty good. Settle down young man, you are too young to be so angry.

-sickboi

waste_elite (August 23, 2002)

no, he's right. this sucks. hard.

Anonymous (August 23, 2002)

you sir are a jackass.

this one of the year's best releases.
