Reviews

I admit it. I walk into Borders and just sample whatever is on the short punk sampler. Four or five cds that may or may not spark my interest. Maybe Borders isn't the best place to find good punk music. But I sure as hell found my new favorite band there.

For some reason, this album caught my eye. I listened first to the track, "You're So Last Summer", and I immediately loved it. It's not exactly pop, it's not exactly emo, and it's not exactly punk. However, it's music that you can relate to. Even if you have no idea what the songs mean, you feel like the band is your best friend. They totally understand you, and you understand them.

The power of these lyrics is amazing. On track six, "Ghost Man On Third", the lyrics read- "Jinx me something crazy/thinking if it's three, then I'm as smooth as the skin that rolls across the small of your back." Now if that's not brilliant lyrics, I don't know quite what is. And the booklet- while it is a bit hard to follow along with the lyrics, they are written amazingly- like a diary, so that they don't seem just like lyrics- they seem like some kind of journal entry. You can actually read the lyric booklet. Like some kind of book.

Listen to every song on this album. My personal favorite, "There's No I In Team", is a powerful duet of sorts, that stems from a dispute with TBS and the band Brand New. After all though, I'm somewhat new to this genre of music. But I know one thing- this album is so powerful, it will blow you away. However, if you are a hardcore punk fan, this probably is not for you. But there is no doubt that fans of bands like Saves The Day and Thursday will like this. Don't be fooled by the reviewers. This band is one in it's own. No band comes close to the kind of sound the TBS produces. Please, buy this album now. Do yourself a favor and buy it. Or at least listen to it.

How can you say you are new to a genre, and then say no one compares to a certain band in that genre? Horrible, horrible review.

Sick cd. It's a gem. I've been listening to it for a year and haven't stopped at all. The only thing I have against it, is that the guitars are all power chords and aren't difficult at all. Also they probably are going to break up because Adam was having sex with John's girlfriend I believe. They might just replace members

Why are you raggin on OLD PUNKER's opinions? First you can't call opinions retarded just because they're different from yours, that's just stupid. Second, he doesn't like NoFX, so what? I assume with the name OLD PUNKER he isn't a little kid, & alot of people who grew up listening to bands like NoFX end up growing out of them, it happens. I don't listen to a few of the bands I grew up with. I'm sure your musical tastes will evolve a little as well & you'll find yourself passing on cds that 3-4 years prior you would have died for.

Yeah, every time i turn on the tv and radio there they are, TBS exploiting themselves like a boy band....ummm no. TBS may not be one of those memorable bands that will leave their mark like the clash and the ramones (one band i don't like), but they did release a good cd that isn't a direct clone of someone elses cd like alot of people are doing

"Is everyone alittle pissy that NOfx style punk got incredible boring and these bands are taking over"

Hell yeah NOFX style punk is boring, you can only make jokes for so long before people have to realize they are not that amazing, especially live they do in fact suck

    My Score:

The only thing I have to say is, just because the singer of TBS sounds similar to the saves the day guy, everyone says they're a typical trendy emo band. Besides the vocals, the music is somewhat "emo" but that's where the similarities stop. No they didn't invent a new style, but they do what they do well and they write good songs.

original? every band is original in their own way. they do however sound remarkably like other bands in the genre.

good at what they do? sure, they know what they want to play and play it well.

a packaged trend band? yep, they'll be gone as soon as this emo-pop trend is over. enjoy it while you can, and then move onto the next best thing. thats the music industry.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, September 9, 2002 at 11:23 PM (EDT)
    My Score:

First of all I believe Thursday is closer to a post-hardcore band....not really hardcore...the similarities between TBS and Thursday are quite small, both share that post-hardcore sound...but TBS is poppier.

Their dueling style of vocals make them truly unique, that feature should set them apart from the majority of the post-hardcore punk/emo whatever crowd

There's a valid element of emo in the vocal style.

So the lyrics are a bit sappy, but they're very direct but not overdone like dashboard confessional that it's to the point of almost whining.

Their sound has nothing to do with JEW.

But I must admit the vocals in general get a little tedious as there is a real lack of variety in the recording...very similar to the problem that plagues saves the day.

I think that's about it for comparisons...

I love You Know How I Do, and Cute without the E

To the dipshit a few posts back: because someone says Thursaday is emo doesn't mean they are(you). That's the exact reverse of what you said you hypocrite. Besides if any of you fucks can prove TBS is a packaged band other than their CD insert, I'd like to hear it. So Victory sucks, this band is on their label and that's their decision. Victory may have know it would sell, but it doesn't make this band fake. It's sad you fucks can't even tell the difference. Like them or not, watch their live shows and read their interviews. They don't have the typical boy band pop-punk additude and style you think they do.

""And if anyone says these guys suck live then youre talking about a different band because Adam gets so into it that he starts swinging the mic around on stage and catching it perfectly almost everytime.""

Wow, thats really neat. You appearantly have never heard of Roger Daltry, never saw At the Drive In, and still haven't seen Thursday. Its passe and trite.

""Thursday said they think of themselves as a hardcore band.""

Thursday can think of themselves as a ska band, it doesnt mean that they are.

""And TBS is only packaged because they were done that way by victory.""

Are you really so blind as to think they had nothing to do with it? They really didn't want to pose for the cute-boy pop punk photos a la Starting Line/Midtown in the insert? They wrote the liner notes. They took the pictures. And yes, Victory did a fantastic job of knowing exactly what would get you meatheads on the line.

"They write good songs with good lyrics, eat shit."

You should go listen to the bands I listed in my first post. TBS can't hold a candle to those bands' lyrics.

TBS is not a terrible band. I would rather hear them over a nu metal band any day. Heck, they're probably really nice guys to boot, but I think they're terribly overrated and I want to encourage a little more thinking.

    My Score:

(before we begin, please note that I gave the record a 5)

    1) Everyone, Thursday is not a hardcore band. They are good, but definately not hardcore.
    2) Yes, Taking Back Sunday sounds like Saves the Day meets Thursday. They even went so far as to have the same producer who did "Full Collapse" record this record.
    3) They are as popularly stereotypical emo as Dashboard Confessional. Same cliched lyrics (borrow STD's melodies but not their dark lyrics) about girls and references to "shy moments" and seasons of the year, song titles, and even layout (anyone remember the 'Polaroid Picture' promo items STD did for Stay What You Are? take a glance in the TBS cd. the soft colors neatly bordered by white are also emo-rific and overdone.)
    4. Victory packaged them and sold them to you perfectly. You in turn are eating it up and proclaiming that it "stands alone" and is "original" which is very carried away. Is everyone in such a need for "the new, next or big" things that we'll latch onto anything with the appropriate parts?

Finally, am I the only one who pays attention???

Everyone should go buy the Sparta, No Knife, Bright Eyes, Hot Water Music, Pedro the Lion, Flaming Lips, Killswitch Engage, Thrice, and Piebald records. Those bands do stand alone and aren't coming to you via the emo assembly line.

He gets really into it.. Yeah, each song has it's own thing while keeping the same style. As much as I hate the trends of music these days, this album is one of the most intense and emotional albums I've ever listened to. The recording goes along way with that, but it shows in their awesome live show. Listen to this 5 times and tell me it's not atleast a good CD. I'll be the first to admitt that this reminded me of saves the day at first, but look past that and enjoy it.

Sorry, that's all I had time for at the moment tho, I am driving down to the beach tonight so I will have an hour in the car to listen to the whole thing, then I will give you my 2 cents.

you cant just listen to a minute of each song on this record. The songs build up and usually the ending is the best part

because all I ever hear is TBS this or TBS sounds like Thursday bla bla bla, I decided after reading this review that I would just stop taking everones word for it and go out and purchase the album. So 10 mins ago I did and I put it in my cd player and gave each song about a minute listen to (cause tower is only 10 mins away) and all I have to say is I expected more, much more. With all the hype that everyone says about TBS being the greatest, I expected this amazing CD but so far what I have gotten is something very ordinary and very weird. It sounds nothing like Thursday in my opinion, but anyway, hopefully it will grow on me because the vocals are good, the music is just, eh...different, give me a day or two and I will post again.
