Alot of bands put out records that nail their coffins shut. They might put out records afterward that reclaim what they lost, but they can never get back to where they were. The new record is often a plea to an old formula they hope will win back the fanbase they lost. Please login or register to post comments. What are the benefits of having a Punknews.org account?
this album has set the bar for me.. Best album... except for No Division. And ranks with Moonpies for Misfits. Best album... except for No Division. And ranks with Moonpies for Misfits. "Fuel for the Hate Game" is their definative statement, but this album is more accsessable without sacraficing qualitiy. If I wanted somone to listen to HWM, I would have them start here. Just like on "Fuel", the first 5 songs fire without a missed step. brilliant cd...brilliant band... I love this album....I decided to go shopping the other day for some clothing ( shopping is my own personal hell ).....after about an hour of agony I stopped in at a music store. Breaking the pact I had given myself at the beginning of the day not to buy any music ( since I had just spent 200 bucks on cd's) I choked and bought HWM - caution. One of the better decisions Ive made lately. I love this cd and it hasnt left my cd player since. Im left with no clothes and no money but a sweet ass cd collection. I give this two thumbs up a kick in the pants and a 20 on the ratings scale. a record for years, means you can hear it again and agian Right now, I love this record more than anything else that I own. An 11. I personally dont think music can get much better. Great album, great damn-ass review. this CD picks up where their last left off, minus the special tingles. if you want to hear this band in its prime, listen to 'fuel for the hate game' and skip over this trash. My brother just gave me this cd too...it's my introduction to HWM and i'm lovin' it...good stuff - bigjerk My brother just gave me this CD and it kicks some serious fucking ass. I didn't get into HWM until after "A Flight and a Crash" was released and their recent work has truly blown me away. I'm not a big fan of their older stuff (A lot of my friends dig "Forever and Counting" a lot yet I don't care for it). This is so, so good. To the guy who posted: "The Lagwagon CD is taking so long because it will probably be the last and I'm sure the band wants it to be their best work yet." Their? They're! excellent album....and an excellent review, this guy know how to write. What is the big deal about lagwagon? Never liked them. Wyzo, don't bother defending yourself man. You'll just get inundated by more Anonymous Fucks who think they know better but don't bother doing anything about it. This review was pretty damn good and I look forward to getting it Actually, Armchair Martian is better than Bad Asstronaut (I spelled Ass! Because that's what they are similar to: an ass!)) tisk tisk tisk, lagwagon never stoped making amazing music silly goose and next and last album looks to be as amazing as their last albums Lagwagon seemed to stop making interesting music some time ago, I'm more interested in the bad astronaut material. eh. im already giddy for the next wagon cd and bad as. comes out in a few days i made up this insult..... I like the harder songs on this album and the experimental ones, but....as usual, as much as i like this band, i just cannot get into the poppier stuff. But i'd still rather listen to HWM do poppy than New Found Glory. I agree, Black lag shoved out their best records between '84 & '85, 4 of them, their most creative and artistically expressive ones. Same with the Ramones and Husker Du. It doesn't matter what stupid 12 year old punkers who want everything to sound the same think, it's about the music and expanding it's horizen. To be fair I haven't picked this up, but the review is excellent and I like the band so its on the list for my next trip to the store BUT what I really wanted to say is waht up with "take a break" thing? When guys are on a roll, especially in the punk thing, the more the merrier. Flag put out records non-stop for a few years, Husker Du for years, the Ramones and dozens of other more modern bands. Yeah you get some filler, but you also capture something thats just perfect, that could only be played that good at that point in time. Waiting two years to record a tune like that, letting it waste away due to overproduction, mood changes, old age, whatever, defeats the purpose and is not what bands like HWM are all about. I applaud the fact they that consistently churn out records, it further distances them from most of the crap out there. wyzo, you just don't get it. I didn't say it was a big deal, just that you ruined the fun. Calling him Hank Chinaski was merely an "inside joke" so that I could feel hip and above the other guy since I've read his books just like lying to him on the other two questions did. Also, a pet name is if I would call you "pumpkin" or something, not if I called you "John Wilson." Got it, pumpkin? That does blow something hard that Black Sparrow's no longer around. I hadn't heard that before. Suppose I better get around to finishing off my Fante and Bukowski collections before they become RARE AND OOP! on Ebay. i like how scott thinks he knows everything about a band since he works on a popular punk site. i remember a year ago he was a scenester making fun of kids at jimmy eat world shows for singing the wrong lyrics. like I give a shit if I give someone an epitaph mailing list answer, the world apparently hasn't been destroyed. It seems to be kind of irrelevant with all this useless comments below but, Good review Wyzo! Bukowski didn't have shit on Ginsberg or Burroughs. Wyzo, you idiot. If you noticed, people were saying not to answer his questions. I answered them sarcastically. Hank Chinaski is hardly a pet name. 1984 was just a year I threw out (also a literary reference) and the Little Dog Laughed is a fictional fictional short story taken from the novel Ask The Dust by John Fante, the man that Charles Bukowski derived most of his influence from. Christ. Quit trying to be such a smartypants, asshead. the guy below the guy below me is funny and the guy below me is an asshole Comment below me lacks intelligence quotient required to continue breathing while pressing a key on the keyboard. Too bad we survive for two minutes without any oxygen flow to our brain or the world would be a better place. NO Lagwagon can't break up there the greatest band alive and i've only got to see them once. They have so much more to offer. I like bad Astronaut but Lagwagon is way better. and also i heard awhile back that rancid is/was going to break up after there next album? Thanks to the two guys who gave me some more info on Lagwagon. Sucks they will break up, but I guess it is better to go out while you are still ahead. Fuckin' Epitaph. Hank Chinaski must be spinning in his grave. He died in 1984 and he wrote a book called "The Little Dog Laughed"" To the guy 2 posts down, I can guarantee that this is the last Wagon CD. First, the band has accomplished everything they possibly can with the pop-punk style and they realize this. Second, Joey wants to do Bad Astronaut full time because it allows to him to do something new and fresh. lagwagon almost broke up a few years ago, but decided not to.they almost decided to make 'lets talk about..' their last release. the reason the new album is taking so long is cuz of that, joeys label he tried to run, the gimme gimmes, warped tour, and joey's side band bad astronaut What the fuck? Lagwagon's LAST Cd? Where did you hear about this and is it true? Fuckin' Epitaph. Hank Chinaski must be spinning in his grave. He died in 1984 and he wrote a book called "The Little Dog Laughed." If you don't know those answers you are an idiot. Don't answer that guy! He's just trying to get the answers for the Epitaph newsletter contest. Who wrote the book that HWM got their name from? "To the person who asked who the other Punk band who released an album entitled caution, you're probably going to be really embarrassed that you couldn' t think of it. The Lagwagon CD is taking so long because it will probably be the last and I'm sure the band wants it to be their best work yet. Very true. They stopped for awhile but now they're back on track. Their new ones practically done and they just put out Maladroit this year. I guess what I'm getting at is why it takes these bands so long to put out albums. I mean where in the hell is the new Lagwagon already!!! Too bad Weezer has only put out 4 albums in 8 years. Some bands put out a record once every 3 years. You tour for a year then take 2 off. I don't know about you guys but I have to be at work everyday...no 2 year breaks for me. Making music is their job. With the exception of Weezer, HWM are the only ones around putting out albums once a year. Its called hard work. The new album is incredible!! I love fuel for the hate game as much as everyone else, but they must move on. Let this album stand on its own. Everybody has their favorites, I don't see the need to compare it to everything else they've done. If its good its good. Leave it at that. do they still have beards? Haha, now who's embarassed, jerkass? I don't even like Operation Ivy but I knew that they never released any records called Caution. OPIVY is worse than No Division, and that's saying a lot. Operation Ivy had a song called Caution, but not an album. Their album was called Energy and their EP was called Hectic. Speaking on the subject Built to Spill is from Idaho another place more bands need to play hot water music sucks ass actually i think op ivy had an ep titled caution. anyway, this album is very kick ass. def.more cohesive than "a flight..", and the production, especially vocally is tighter than ever, but not overproduced. great vocals. nice harmonies. its not as great as everyone was hyping it to be, but its a step up from a flight, but not a huge step. everyone was way to hard on a flight. i'm rambling. Wrong again. Energy was the title, sucka. To the person who asked who the other Punk band who released an album entitled caution, you're probably going to be really embarrassed that you couldn' t think of it. 'untitled' is 'the sense' umm what track is "Untitled"? haven't heard it yet What a disappointment. What happened to this once incredible band? great album..no "fuel for the hate game", but nothing really compares to that record. BUILT TO SPILL IS NOT DEAD this cd rocks. but more importantly, built to spill is dead? when did this go down? I think the reviewer is mixed up about one detail. If you're referring to the Green Day album, it's "Warning:" and not "Caution:". Yup, Built To Spill is no more... Jimi - i agree. i think this cd is overall really good but does have a few fillers, only like 3. the production on the cd is the best they've ever had and i think the best thing about the record is the vocals. ive always liked their vocals but they just sound especially good on this one. its kind of hard to explain, for instance listen to the backup and lead vocals during the chorus in "remedy" and the same during the bridge in "the sense". it just has an overwhelming awesome feeling to it.... like i said its hard to explain. i also think the sense is one of the best songs on the album and they were really fucking good live in athens and thats really all i have to say about it. later Great album, lots of good songs and only a few ok ones. SCOTT IS THE MAN!!! This is definitely better than A Flight and A Crash, but fuck, what happened to the band that wrote Where We Belong, Loft, 220 Years and dozens of other fucking amazing songs. Forever and Counting was their best. No Division was decent but definitely not as good as their first three albums. Jesus Christ guys stop putting out these shitty albums. Why does everyone like Trusty Chords so much? Am I wrong in hearing the lines "I hate this place/I love these chords"? That's some terrible and cheesy songwriting right there. I don't understand how something THAT cheesy could be such a crowdpleaser. Maybe I'm an ass... probably. Also, Fuel For The Hate Game could beat the shit out of you. Show some respect, assheads. Finding The Rhythms is also way better than most dorks give it credit for. Well I just got back from a Sunrise Records up here in Canada and they were selling "Caution" for 27 dollars. I've got a fan....yah! "most of wyzos views i dont believe in. but good review of a good cd" what big name punk band put out a record called "caution"? can't think of any. I saw HWM live on Sunday and HOLY SHIT! Wait until you see some of these songs live...I loved the CD before but after seeing Remedy and Trusty Chords live I was completely blown away. These guys truly are a force to be reckoned with. To all of you who say they should take a break...FUCK YOU! How can you complain about a band coming out with too many albums? Especially when all of them are so damn good. I say keep up the good work HWM! I really didnt mean to start a bash scott fest. I just think that this has distinctly different characteristics than their previous records, like cleaner vocals, less vocals with both chris and chuck, and their most polished sound yet, some people might right it off. My point is dont write it off, but adjust to the changes they have made, enjoy the cd, because it is inspiring music, and support them, because theyre hard working nice people. By the way, this review bashing and the infamous "Viva Death" bashing reminds me of AOL. Funny stuff. This CD is way better than "A Flight And A Crash" but i still believe that "No Divison" is the best overall. "Caution" is full of great songs like that mountain song, "Remedy", "Trusty Chords". HWM should take a 3 year break cuz it seems like they are putting out a record every year. most of wyzos views i dont believe in. but good review of a good cd right on jimi way to tell em...kill em jimi go jimi wo0o0o0o0o0o...don't ask me why i do it jimi i'm just a fan scott Who is wyzo talking about when he says "Caution:" was the name of another punk bands cd? He could be talking about Green Day, but that was "Warning:". good review...but goddamnit.... New album released today and they are playing here in RVA tonight....oh shit. Someone's gonna get tore-up tonight... goddamn scott, i couldnt agree with you more. without a doubt, no division is their best, front-to-back. this new album is "ok". like HWM said, same shit different record. exactly that, shit. just like their last album. Their - someone's filler.....? i have never associtaed that word with HWM. 'untitled' is 'perfect sense', but you probably figured that out already. Cheers to 'untitled' songs! Scott weren't you going to bed? Also: I can't wait to get my greedy little fingers on this. Too bad my bank account statement reads "-$20.83." Goddamn, I really want this CD. I love it when the comments sections turn into a "bash Scott" fest. First off, Kudo's on the review. Very well written, unbiased and informative. Unlike a fellow reviewer by the name of Scott whos reviews are as band as his opinions on music in general. Scott, please stop posting comments and writing reviews... Let Wyzo do them for you cause he does a hell of a lot better of a job sorry, my info for the last review: Uh, no offense to Mr. Punkrocks.net staffer, Scott, but if you really think that this album had more filler than previous CD's you HAVE to be listening to a different CD than I did. I have enjoyed this CD more than any other this year, including other favorites by thrice and pedro the lion. This CD is a change, because of a cleaned up vocal style. However, the choruses are written incredibly well, the song structure is awesome as always, and there is more energy in this release than I have heard in a long time. I really dont see how anyone could ever say that this CD isnt amazing, let alone accussing it of being filler (unless you're narrow-minded, and never allow the freedom to expand and improve their sound, forever condemning them to a restricted and pigeon-holed existence. Good review! I saw these guys at warped, never really listened to em, but when epitaph started streaming the album on its site I gave it a listen and was really blown away, this album kicks ass!! I agree. It's really difficult to get into a band with so many releases. I go to a HWM show owning 2 of thier cds and I know one song they play. I love the cds I have by them but sheesh, they have quite a collection of discs. I'm in college my wallet can't afford it. What, no Calvin and Hobbes comic? good review, picking this up tomorrow |
