Its a funny story really. I walked into Hastings one night looking for a good record. Hastings mind you is the only store in our pathetic town that carries decent cds. Anyway I walked in, and began browsing the cds when I rembered Bad Astronauts new cd was coming out on Tuesday. I raced over to the computer to look it up not expecting to find it since it was a week before the much anticipated debut full length was released. Holy moth balls there it was. Two copies. The only problem was that it sat in the back where no employee went for anyone. After a few complaints, a sneaky move, and a cup of free coffee I held the soon to be realeased cd in my hands.

For those who are not familiar with Bad Astronaut the lead vocalist is the ever great Joey Cape of Lagwagon. Now keep in mind before purchasing this record, its not another Lagwagon. In fact it would be a crime to compare the two for they have a distinctly different sound. This record is slow. With that said its a good slow *most of the time.* The lyrics of "Single" provide the cheezy nerd rock romance while songs like "These Days" and "The Passenger" are more in depth. The lyrics are thoughtful yet understandable to listen to. Something that everyone can relate to is the theme in most of the songs. The music is pretty much along the same lines as their E.P. Consisting of melodic guitars sometimes accoustic, electronic synth, and keyboards galore. Accept songs like "Solar Sister" and "Off the Wagon" bring the record down because of the dullness and lack of interesting music. I'll tell you what everytime I hear "Off the Wagon" the beginning reminds me of...

Ah I can't say it. Alright since you insisted. It sounds scarily like Dave Mathews Band. Ouch. Not a good move in my book, but to each their own.

Its a funny story really. How ironic is it when you work so hard to get a cd its not what you expected. Its not dull but at the same time its not much different from their previous effort. Yea I know it sounds harsh, but all in all it still is an enjoyable release with the heartfelt lyrics and vocals with music that is tight and different. Its a funny story really. Kind of grows on you...

If a cd aint lighting a fire under your ass after two listens max it fucking sucks. Since when did listening to cd become a long drawn out process. If you have to put that much effort into listening to a cd it is fucking lame.

The first listen, you think 'bland, non-descript,weak,banal,run of the mill' etc..etc...But wait....the fifth listen, you think 'mmm, not bad, pretty catchy, good vocals, good guitar....you detect a tad of synthesiser, various sampled sounds,multi-layered understated guitar work, backing vocals, harmonies...etc..etc...Now the tenth listen and after....You don't just THINK,you KNOW this is a great fucking record...Awesome song structures, brilliant emotion charged vocals, layer upon layer of tremendously powerful (at a kind of subliminal level) music, great thought provoking lyrical content....it just keeps growing on you, sounding better and better....If you don't have a copy of this cd...GET ONE SOMEHOW, you won't regret it.....Totally encapsulating, enchanting, emotional excellence. this review is shit. off the wagon has probablyt he best lyrics of any song this year. the whole song is about joey's battle with alchoholism, told from teh viewpoint of alchohol. its hard to explain but as a lit minor with a focus in poetry its absolutely amazing.

Well onto the album...I loved "Acrophobe" so much that I worn out disc and I had no choice but to put it in the trash can. I think "Houston..." will suffer the same fate. Great fucking band!

they did a split with armchair like last year or something. Like 3 songs each covering eachother? could be wrong but I just added those songs to the end of Acrophobe and it almost makes it like a full length. Even though Acro seemed like a full length, I think it was an ep?

i dunno anymore. A cd could be 3 songs long and seem like a full length (especially Bad Astronaut). The kids these days, and their wackey "space music"!

The song is called gregs estate, not hello lester. Pay attention to detail jerky. By the way, the album is great. Everyone who liked break your frame should check out armchair martian and buy all their cds. You will be a better person because of it.

you are a complete retard! i just wanted to clarify that. "i like the direction they were going with hello lester", that's great. this album still rips. "break your frame", a ripping cover of armchair martian but done in Bad Astronaut's own interpretation. that just rips in itself. again best album of the year right in front of Hot Water Music's "Caution".

punk news, please get rid of this music reviewer.

    My Score:

Alright people. First off i said that one song sounds like Dave Matthews Band. The beginning of that song for that matter. Somehow it got blowin up from the first couple post to the post 2 down from me. So I dont get how people are coming up with me saying that the whole album sounds like DM. Sorry if you thought that. Second it seems that people are just get so defended because I dont like this as much as their first release. Cries of well you dont have an open mind, or you dont have good taste in music really show who the intelligent readers are here. With that said as you noticed the last part of my review ends with "Its a funny story really it kinda grows on you" And to tell you the truth it has grown on me a bit but I still think its way overated. I like the direction they were going with Hello Lester. That is a hell of a song.

good cd, and to tell you the truth, not a bad review at all. I liked it, it kept you interested because it wasn't all boring shit explaining the cd, you talked enough about the album and then added fun commentary in the middle of it. good work, but I disagree with your opinion

    My Score:

Yeah, the reviewer just didn't seemed to be more focused on the fact that he was writing a review rather than actually reviewing the band. Bad call.

In terms of the Dave Matthews band sound alike, I totally say baf to that. My girlfriend said she kinda liked the album, but said that it sounds more like Foo Fighters than anything else.

I disagree, but I'm not a big Foo Fan. Although, I'm sure there are some connections between to the two bands, Bad Astro and the Foo, I totally dig Joey's commitment to expressing the pain and anguish that obviously travels alongside being a genius.

I heard "The Passenger" off the fat wreck.de site, and immediately had to get the rest of the album. That song is freaking incredible. Everyone I know, even non-ex-punx love it (What am I saying, of course non-ex-punx would love it) The whole album is really good, even if it's a little long. Solar Sister and If I Had a Son also catch me everytime.

The reviewer should give it a listen a few more times, cause it took me quite a while to get into Bad Astronaut when Acrophobe came out. But since i knew what I was getting into, and had an open mind, I ate it up from the very beginning.

For those of you who can't figure it out, "White Trash ..." was a referece to "White Light, White Heat, White Trash" Common people. It's just a typo.
Jesus Christ, "White Trash, Two Heebs, And a Bean" isn't exactly Fat Mike's best work.

    My Score:

incredibly great cd. i get the feeling that it's a little to unaccessible to some, but it's actually a huge improvement over acrophobe. dont get me wrong, acrophobe was a great cd, but listening to HWHADP puts it to shame. this cd shows a much more mature band, and a different sound (although some traces of acrophobe remain). oh and i thought that "off the wagon" is a great song, and it doesn't sound at all like dave matthews (not to be redundant, but i mean come on).

I think it's a great album. "These Days" "the passenger" and "if I had a son" are all amazing.

It's probably going to take me a while to get into all the songs, but I think thats part of what makes an album good sometimes.

Dave sux guy! anyways, i dig this cd a lot. I've had it for about a month and a half and everyone who listened to it said they were going to buy a copy. Ya, there aren't enough 'grey suits' for me, but the slow stuff is still pretty rad. joey borrowed a lot of Grandaddy's sound on "these days" and it sounds great! "Another dead romance" and "killers and liars" are top notch tracks, especially the last 56 seconds of 'killers'. And "the passenger" is a haunting song dealing with sept 11th. When joey sings the 'falling airplanes' line, it gives me chills everytime. Anyways, buy this album. You won't regret it. late

your review sucked "ouch not a good thing in my book". and man it just sucks when a band trys something new and original for a change, its even worse when they are amazing doing it (cough cough bad astronaut). i think this album is a great step forward for the band. they develop a sound not as "accesible" as acrophobe, which is why some of you lesser listeners may have trouble dealing with this cd as a whole--emptycauses

Gotta agree with the person a couple spaces down. Definately the album of the year. I haven't taken it out of my car yet. Amazing hooks, tremendous flow, and moving songwriting make this album damn near perfect. Joey Cape does with HWHADP as Mike Ness did with "White Trash ..." While the reviewer is entitled to his opinion, I think he (she) needs to give the album a few more spins.

First off id like to say that it took me a year before i realized that "acraphobe" (BA's first album) is easily in my top ten favorite albums of all time. So ill give it at least that long before i have a solid opinion on this one. But as of now, its just not as good. But what i do know (right now) is that the live dave mathews band album eats cock. The studio dave mathews eats cock. Anything dave mathews even looks at, indeed, eats cock. Last but not least, the person that made me write dave mathews name 4 times in this review about one of my favorite bands, shall rot in hell for all eternity. If youve never heard any Bad Astronaut, go buy thier first album, "acrophobe," if you dont like it... you know what to do. Go out to the record store, and spend 20 dollars on your precious college wuss rock. While your out there you might as well pick up all the TOOL albums you dont already own.
