I would have to say that when I first picked up this The Transplants I really had no idea what to expect. I refused to dismiss this side-project solely based on the fact that Tim Armstrong is the best at what he does. Also, Travis Barker is pretty good for a drummer; it’s hard to deny it. All I had heard was “Tall Cans in the Air”, and although I didn’t like that song, its infectious beat and somewhat ridiculous lyrics grew onto me. But that was only one song. I had heard many people talking about how the CD was completely different from “Tall Cans in the Air”. Those people were right. This music blows dandruff flakes away! My hair is now full and shiny! Its an okay album. What ruined the album for be was Rob Aston. There are some really nice mellow songs on there there that would be ten times better if they werent interuppted by his horrible screaming rap. I was really excited to hear this album when it first came out, but was pretty dissapointed. The music is great, I love the fusion of all the different styles, but the lyrics on most of the songs are just awful. I don't know where Tim Armstrong found this guy, but Rob Aston cannot rap worth a damn. His rhymes are crap and his voice is even worse. I hate how you can hear him sucking in air after every line. He sounds like that kid in the wheelchair from malcolm in the middle except much louder and more obnoxious. This album is freakin awesome. Anyone who doesnt like it cause its "too MTV friendly" or that people just like it cause of Tim Armstrong can eat horse crap. Travis barker maybe be a member of a pop-punk band but who gives a rat's ass? He is the best out there in this genre of music. Romper Stomper is an awesome song. Anyone who likes AFI will enjoy the song Quick Death which has Davey Havock on it. To all you idiots out there who gives this CD a bad wrap hey SR says it best on Track 2 of this CD. "..It's so funny how you hate my F*cking guts but at the same time love me..." Tim Armstrong can lick my ass. So can those Transplants. It is the kinda material which ruins the world. Die. i think that this cd is good but not great. um transplants are pretty damn good.i too thought that i was not going to like them but then i actully listioned to the cd and found out that there are more better songs than dimonds and guns( the single) i think that they are great except i really don't like the singers voice when i heard "dj dj" after hearing tim sing then hearing this guys really harsh voice it was different.anywho overall good cd good band.except travis i personily don't like him. he is a great drummer but i think he fills way too much..thats pretty much the reason why i stoped listioning to blink 182 after there origanil drummer left then travis showed up. anyway great cd i high sudjest listioning to this cd it might get some getting use to but u will like it i garentee it. I gotta give respect to FortyMinutesWest. This cat is on the nose. Transplants STINK. Rancid is pretty bad too. I think people only like this album because they like kissing Timmy's ass. And the rest are MTV idiots of whome only like it for the presence of Travis. I'm afraid now people r going to start dressing in leather and studs everywhere thus rendering the look uncool. Really, remember all those idiots with backwards caps, skateboards and hurley t's because that's how mark hoppus dressed? I see another Boxcar Racer here.. only more of a travesty. And whose idea was it to mix rap with punk? I never heard this album...but the review made me think about checking it out. Anyone looking for a good rock/rap hybrid should check out Shootyz Groove. The song "Faithful" is gorgeous. The CD isn't bad. To whoever saw DK and Social D...damn...I'd love to see those two bands. 36 year-olds type in caps. What 36 year old self-respecting man says shit like that? ".......I think an "oldpunker" should have seen bands like Black Flag and Minor Threat." Now perhaps it's just me, but does anyone else notice that Tim Armstrong flat out sucks? So this guy's in Rancid, an overrated band of epic porpotions. You might just say I don't "get" Rancid. But if you can "get" sloppy(say it's intentional, that still doesnt make them good)vocals over mediocre music, then good for you buddy. Aside from the bass skills of Matt Freeman, Rancid is a band that I would never listen to willingly. I bet if the US wanted to avoid this whole war thing they could just stream the last few Rancid albums over and over again. Either Hussein kills himself or becomes a fake street punk, either way he won't be much of a threat outside of smelling pretty bad from never showering. With our trade embargo Hussein will not be able to purchase the wood glue or Knox gelatin that is necessary to style a decent mohawk, thus plunging himself into a deep depression and and deciding that maybe he'd better make peace. But I digress. A few months back I heard that Tim was starting a new band, the Transplants. So this is rap-punk eh? Incoherent blatherings that sound like a walrus tripping on on acid have never been something I enjoyed, so I wasn't surprised that this was terrible. No big deal, I figured that no one would buy it, thus making this nothing but an unfortunate blip on the radar of punk rock. Wrong. Seems kids are actually buying this, and liking it(because of who's in it), somehow. This CD sounds like a bad joke that only I don't get. Perhaps I'm not hip, or with it. Or perhaps I require a little more substance to my music that Tim's uninspired ramblings about how hard he has it. Sorry for the rant and I know I'll probably get bashed for this, but I had to say it. this is good stuff. i really like 'tall cans in the air' Oh yes, I completly agree!! Accept I think "We Trusted You" is the best song...haha They rock. i absolutley love this album, but tim armstrong's vocals just aren't as interesting as they are with rancid (save for california babylon (ma man)). Hey, try a little harder. You might be onto something here, but not just yet. It still feels like its in the development stage. At least you got the sound, now try going for the structure and feel. Thats all i have to say about the New CD. I'm always interested. good album. doesnt suck. its preety good. oh yeah...why do u all fuckin idolize tim so much?~! yeah yeah hes produced so much good stuff. but its juss too much idolization. like one of the songs from the distillers..IDOLESS! not really but yeah.. back to the transplants. theyre ok. to all those who don't have anything nice to say, SHUT THE FUCK UP. this album kicks ass.you can't do what tim can and you're critisizin his shit. sad really. keep em coming tim! bang up job! "MY FIRST SHOW WAS AT THE METRO(NEW HAVEN CT.)BACK IN 79'-DEAD KENNEDYS a friend of mine at film school once told me that he had a tape of armstrong filming the set of a porno, with some embarassing shizer bloopers. I have the CD where Tim blows into the cider jug and yodels. A truly breakthrough performance. Damnit. That last comment was me. Why the hell did I have to log in again? On the what constitutes an 'oldpunker' topic, how about someone who was into punk before Green Day and Offspring? That would be fair in my opinion... well for this site anyways, as I don't think there are too many of us. Or maybe pre-Pennywise and Nofx would be better? Just throwing some thoughts out there. I think that if the band had ACTUALLY PLAYED California Babylon rather than using electronics it would have been a cool reggae jazz song with great vocals. But, yes, it does come off as kind of weak with the protools and the electronics. But the rhymes are still good. I like Romper Stomper cause I think Eric rules and the song has a consistent, if artificial, beat. I really want to know if these guys only use instruments live or if they have a DJ, I really wanna know. Quck Death is okay too. Wow these guys put the suck back in Asuck. And they spent 2 years on this crap!? Haha at least Rancid and Blink 182 havent been putting out anything new bc the core of their band was doin this... I don't understand why people like "Califonia Babylon" so much. I thought I was listening to fat boy slim the first time I heard it. The beasties dont suck-oldpunker- I like the Brody comment Ha!! Brody Ono I listened to this at RPM in Newcastle and this was to say utter balls There are so many special guests on this album, they should call it "Tim Armstrong and Friends". HORRID....SHITE...10 STARS!!!! This is digression, but DREAM is definitely a Wu-Tang homage. Not great, but far better than i expected, I like "Romper Stomper". This album is a guilty pleasure for me. i love this album. there are a few clunkers on here, some really good ones too. i like rob's yelling/raping voice and of course tim's voice is great as usual. its not some of travis's best drumming but hell its still a good cd. They wrote about 40 Transplants songs. I truly expect a sequel to this album... I haven't heard this CD yet. Judging by I haven't heard the album yet, but I think that this review was really well written... so that's cool... I'm actually kinda excited to get my paycheck so that I can get it. Tall cans in the air seems like a funny song, that's the only one i've heard. And to the dude that said something about "brody negatively effecting lint".... well I doubt it... it's kinda hard to effect someone... and in any case the distillers are awesome and I can't wait to hear what else tim, lars or any member of rancid puts out... whatever... take care... good review... Oh please, avoid this "Brody is ruining Lint" crap. Its as if Tim is some fictional character in everyones mind that does only their favorite sound and everything else he does is somehow "not really Tim." These are Lint's songs, like them or not, don't try to blame them on someone else. The first time I listened to this, I thought it was the worst album ever put together. I promised to never listen to it again. I have since listened to it and come to this conclusion. It's alright.1/3 is really good.1/3 is alright, and 1/3 is horrible. Any band that has Tim has potetntial.And it helps when Vic Ruggiero is in about half the album. I don't like Rob at all though. The only song he does a good job at is DJDJ, and some of the lyrics are downright stupid, and really hurt the album. I wished Tim would've put more effort to the Silencers. I think my first punk show was Bad Religion in 89'. I saw ZZ Top in 87'. Word. Im 36 sickboi,and sure,if you think 23 constitutes be "old", then yes-ha ha oldpunker- What makes one an "OLD PUNKER"? By today's standards I would assumeranyone 21 or older (based on the fact that the scene probabaly has a mean age of about 17) I'm almost 23, does that constitute me being an "OLD PUNKER"? I picked this up on this past weekend,even after everyone (or so it seemed)trashed it,but it is actually one of the only cds that puts everything in but the kitchen sink,which is what makes it good.. And california babylon is the standout(along with dj dj)-oldpunker- Its funny how you people care so much as to argue pretty much everything that is wrong with "the scene" is shown in many of the posts below. the way you people talk about rap and techno and whatever and call it all shit...its so laughable. i mean we all know nelly sucks, but is that a reason to hate all things rap? would you be ok with it if someone said "punk sucks. just look at good charlotte." id be pissed if someone said that, because they are disregarding years of amazing music (clash, fugazi, etc etc etc) that has been boundry-pushing and influential in many areas of music. you are no better by saying shit like "rap and techno sucks." stereotyping is what gets us all in trouble. form your own opinions before you start letting such bullshit pour from your mouth. Davey should be ashamed for the sh*t he contributed to this amateur sounding CD. Horrible. this reviewer is clearly biased sures some of the cd gets annoying, and the rap cliches are a bit much, but its at least fun and interesting. im not huge on hip hop or any of that, but i mean, psh who cares? this isnt a cd for things to come or any of that crap, its just tim having fun. just let him have his fun, and try to have fun with it. p.s. eric ozenne is the bomb diggity if i should go so far true this cd is different, but i still think its good. its got a unique sound and thats a good thing in this age of all the same music. i took it for what it is an experiment and it's great it has elements of everything and is very fresh in an age of very stale music If I had heard the whole album first, I wouldn't have bought it. Tall cans and Diamonds and Guns definately cool though. But not a buyer. The best songs on this album, "California Babylon" and "Down in Oakland" are completely Tim's. Everything else, Rob manages to ruin. "Line 'em all up/And gun 'em all down"????? Great, what a fantastic thing to listen to. I don't care what kind of New York Crew Mr. Rob aka the H20 roadie is from, being hard is NOT cool, even if you are from the hardcore scene. And Davey's song is by far the worst song on the album. praising worthless mediocrity written by a dinosaur. if you want good experimental stuff from tim, get life won't wait. if you want mediocre to shitty experiemental then this is your cd. Some of the songs don't work as well as they could but tracks like "California Babylon" "Diamonds and Guns" and "Romper Stomper" were great in my opinion. Ripping off Wu-Tang is high treason I haven't heard the album yet, but Tim Armstrong is awesome. I've heard "Romper Stomper" and "Tall Cans In The Air". I have to admit i liked "Tall Cans In The Air". It was kinda funny in my opinion. I can't wait to hear "Quick Death", Davey Havok (and AFI) rule. california babylon is by far the best song I bought this cd the first day it came out, and is still in my cd player today. I don't care what anybody says, this album rules. anyone else catch the Wu-Tang Clan ripoff D.R.E.A.M (Drugs Rule Everything Around Me) I love it. I won't flatter this album's originality too much, but this album is flat out great. Every song has grown on me so much and hit me so hard. Romper Stomper, Sad But True, One Seventeen, We Trusted You... You can't knock on this. Rob Aston is truly a star of this show - without Tim the Transplants wouldn't be, for sure - but without Rob's hoarse vocals and evil rhymes, Transplants would be boring. Don't deny the Transplants. Better than expected......Romper Stomper and Quick Death happen to be my favorite songs, but the rest is ok....i dont like tall cans in the air, and the album sounds a little artificial, but there are some worthy songs. At least its way better than Travis' other side band Boxcar Douchebag. He should just rejoin the Aquabats. He looks so sexy in that geek bat uniform. What about all the other great songs on this album such as Coalifornia Babylon, which sounds oddly like a Beck song. Every song on this album is different and a little more description should have been used. But this album is definately worth picking up for anyone who is a fan of music in general. based on the first listen... Can't say it's bad but I didn't like it as much as I thought I would |
