The Ataris / Sugarcult / Autopilot Off / Rufiolive in Chicago (2002)Tours Reviewer Rating: Contributed by: Megan (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on November 19th 2002
Due to an insanely long line to get into the venue, my friend and I arrived to the show in the middle of Rufio’s set, right as they were playing… “Like a Prayer” by Madonna? Whoa… I could be wrong, but I really don’t think that half of the audience had even been born when that song broke. Other than that, Rufio’s set blended completely into one continuous song. The sound was boring and typical of all the other pop punk bands today, kind of like Autopilot Off. I’m sorry, but I couldn’t tell the difference between APO and Rufio. The generic sound made me want to jump off the balcony in frustration. Please login or register to post comments. What are the benefits of having a Punknews.org account?
For emo that's been done before sooo many times, Rufio had something APO didn't seem to. Honesty. Their music had a tangible quality, you almost felt like you could touch it. Rufio thumbs up! I agree with the last post. Don't judge people because of the clothes they wear. I wouldn't want someone looking down on me because of the way I dressed - punk or otherwise. its not valid to judge someone by their abercrombie shirt. jerk. "They have made it this far without signing to a major label, even under their circumstances." the funniest part about these guys saying that the show was "dissapointing" is the fact that they actualy had good expectations to begin with. ataris suck. period. go cry somewhere else I went to the ataris show im minneapolis, and i was pretty disappointed. the first three acts, rufio, sugarcult, and autopilot off were so bland it made me sick. even worse was the crowd that came. the place was packed, needless to say, but my friend and i were two of the only people actually rocking out in the pit. the crowd sucked! it was all preppy suburbanite kids that pulled out that never worn old shirt they bought at the warped tour last summer. I even saw one kid wearing an Abercrombie shirt! Jesus fuckin Christ! Despite all of this, the ataris played a very good show. the shitty crowd and the bland as hell openers couldnt stop the elite few of us that actually came to see a punk show from having a good time. Although, there is a correlation between bands that only write about one thing-girls, and only play the expected pop-punk sound, that has been so embraced by MTV and pop-culture. The Ataris, i believe, will become even more successful in the future. But I am not worried about them, good luck to them. They have made it this far without signing to a major label, even under their circumstances. As for the other three at the show... lets hope the main-stream doesnt catch on to them. I would hate to loath a band that i paid good money to see as much as i do Blink 182 or Sum-41. i'm not much of an Ataris fan anymore, but i don't like to bash them because they were one of the first bands I liked. I think i stopped liking them because of End is Forever. "Music is about originality and expression, talent is always a good thing too, but the first two are most important." i met the rufio guys in texas when they came through with poison the well and strung out and they were some of the nicest guys i've ever met. really funny too. i can see how people would write their music off, but when you really listen to it, its a lot more technical than most pop punk. the drummer is really, really good too. All of these bands are complete crap, you might as well go to a fucking nsync concert, its all the same old shit; a couple of pussy guys who whine about girls and make shitloads of money... I wouldn't goto that show if someone paid me Whaaaaaaat? The Ataris closed their show with "San Dimas?" Wow! They NEVER play that song at shows! WoW!@#*@U$!)_#@$#* -Scott yea, u really can tell who the kids here. I can deal w/ the ataris but i can't stand how every one of their songs is about love and how they can't keep a relationship. If that is the only way to express themselves, then that is pathetic otherwise, i don't like the ataris that much I agree even tho i hold even lower standards for rufio then sugarcult but then again all the "kids" love the ataris, i personally think they are kind of bland. next band i'm in im going to write a bunch of cheesy stupid songs about girls and call myself a song writer and atticus aint cool ashtray monument has to be the best jawbreaker song and the casualties...at least they've got the nice big punky spike hair thing going for them??? O 1234 who's punk what's the score? Boxcar is my favorite of all jawbreaker songs, pretty much sums up everybody on this site in my mind. The Ataris however suck... a lot. You all know I enjoy a little pop-punk every once in a while... but seriously... the Ataris are no good, neither are APO or Rufio i kinda like Sugarcult but they arent good either. Anyway, what Im trying to say is... this was a worthless show.-BostonMusicGuy A jawbreaker cover is a great idea, and boxcar is a great song.... Does anyone else think it is awesome that they did a Jawbreaker cover? Especially since it is off one of the greatest albums of the 1990s... ok, someone down there said to check out the band, name taken. i am just gonna save everyone here from listening to that bland, emo-rock rip off. they are really a terrible band, and those guys think they are really cool and hip, and wear cool clothes like atticus. ummm...no. they suck. dont bother, and the lead singer is a pussy. "your just a dick who can't listen to any music if its not to his/her exact standards." your a fickin idiot. that show was good, you just have bad taste or your tone def. just because you think the sugarcult drummer's mohawk is "uncool" doesn't mean its gotta go. your just a dick who can't listen to any music if its not to his/her exact standards. Rufio did not suck , the cover to the madonna song was good and you need to think twice before submitting stupid comments about shit you don't know. I don't care what you guys say at all. I like the Ataris as much as i like hardcore punk like the casualties and other stuff like that, anyone person who says that the ataris aren't punk needs a life b/c people need to know that there are many different kinds of punk, not just one. To me, all punk is good punk. Later As much as I think the Ataris still belong at the bottom of the bill, I'm happy that they have their own shows, so they don't play others like when they opened for Lagwagon. Fuck this stuff....it doesn't matter what kind of music it is....it just sucks terribly. The guitarist is boring, the singer is boring AND annoying, the lyrics are pathetic and on top of it all they have zero energy. Bad Music. It doesn't matter what kind of music it is. This isn't some "I'm Mr. Punker" comment, I just think this music sucks. Just as I think the Exploited suck. Music is about originality and expression, talent is always a good thing too, but the first two are most important. Now let all the little kids come on here and tell me how I think I'm a super punk and all kinds of shit I didn't say. Like what you want, but I find this the worst kind of music, well, country is pretty bad too. the ataris always play san dimas...they always have someone from the crowd come up and play guitar for it. unless times have changed...I might go to this show when it comes to orlando...(minus 10 punk points from me and give them to the person that stole a sugarcult pen for afi autograph)...you're so punk. "The Ataris closed their show with "San Dimas?" ahh ok, i agree with everyone else. you like the ataris...and not rufio? i really dont get it. i met some of the guys from rufio at the trocadero and they were awesome. really nice guys in general. the ataris arent bad, if youre in the mood for depressing break up songs, but i doubt theyre the best of all those bands. but whatever, your opinion. OK, I wasn't gonna comment on this, but I have to. I agree that Rufio's singer couldn't sing his way out of a paper bag, but the music is great and the guy said that about the riff to "Above Me" by Rufio, you're gay. Sugarcult suck and the Autopilot Off stuff I've heard isn't bad or great. The Ataris don't sound like AP or Rufio and how can you not like a band that has a song named after a line in a Bill and Ted movie ? i think its funny that every review that Megan writes, the commenters always manage to think she's a guy. Yeah, I don't know how the hell this guy can hate Autopilot Off and love The Ataris. The Ataris are one of the worst, overrated bands in punk. All they do is bitch about girls, I mean jesus christ, what's that one gay ass song they have? Something about dreaming about disney land? Man that song is fucking gay. Ewwww! I agree with someone below me that Sugarcult are a bunch of egomaniacs. I aw Tim and he kept blowing off his fans, they come off as bastards. However, I think that Autopilot Off is quite good and they are the only reason I attended that concert. I don't know, I just don't understand how you can hate all those bands, and like The Ataris, they have the same sound. So in conclusion, I agree with the majority on this board when I say you are one fucked up mo fo. This reviewer is a dumbass. I don't see how he can bash Rufio and APO and then love The Ataris. They are one of the most generic, boring bands I've ever heard. The guys from Rufio are good musicians who deserve more respect. I dislike all these bands, I have seen them all before except for the Ataris, whom I ignored at the warped tour. All very generic, all sing about girls too much. I stole a pen from Sugarcult to get Davey Havoc to sign something once...fuck yeah. Even though I don't care for their music, Rufio are really nice guys. The Ataris are whack. to the anonymous person a few below...it is quite common for a band on a tour to open their set with the same intro before they dive into the music, it isn't a "new" thing. Line-ups for tours really don't get much worse than this one. i saw sugarcult in rockford too....they fucking sucked How do you hate Rufio and autopilot Off yet still shit yourself over the Ataris. They are all some lame and derivitive of every other popular "punk" music out there now. It's bullshit. Go suck a donkey's dick in hell. I think the Ataris played the exact same set when they were in Denver with the exception of a song or two. Even the Bronx Tale clip was the same. And for the post below me, the Rufio lyrics are "you're graceful, you're grace falls, down around me in my eyes, you're lovely, you're love leaves, so easily in my eyes." i'm ok with rufio because they have better guitar stuff and bass lines than other pop punk bands that have three chords and invisible basslines.. so i give them props for that. that singer's gotta go though. I'm not huge on Autopilot off... and Sugarcult... they have some HUGE egos from what i could tell when i saw them in Rockford in august... As for the ataris, i wanted to see them. And actually, i had a ticket to this show. And i sold it. So i guess i didn't miss much by not going to this show. god i can not fucking stand rufio.. they are getting pretty bog in vegas and this shit needs to stop. i mean, i can put up with shit music everyonce in a while, but listening to rufio makes me want to kill myself. they're lyrics are so corny and nasally sounding i want to end my life everytime my friend puts in perhaps i suppose and i hear that shitty riff from above. come on, here is a little peice of rufios lyrical capabilities "your grace falls, your grace falls, down around me in my arms, your lovely, your lovely" and it goes on. imagine those chipmonks singing that to a fast punk rock style beat and thats what rufio is. complete shit. I wish they would play "My So Called Life." That song is so good. No one born when that song broke? HA! Those kids must be only 12 years old, shit. Atari's are pop, they suck ass, can't stand their whinney voice. The others are just ok. Whaaaaaaat? |

I like all these bands. This would be like a dream tour. They are all among my favorite bands, The Ataris being the least. They are good though. the guys in Sugarcult are hilarious. How can you not like a band named after a group of lesbians? Autopilot Off is amazing. Their new album Make A Sound blew me away. Rufio is awesome. Their vocalist has a good voice its just kinda hard to understand. Rufio got started because they were tired of seeing their friends feel so down so they wanted to help them and this is how they did it. Through their music. Music is such an influential thing.
