Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)

Due to an insanely long line to get into the venue, my friend and I arrived to the show in the middle of Rufio’s set, right as they were playing… “Like a Prayer” by Madonna? Whoa… I could be wrong, but I really don’t think that half of the audience had even been born when that song broke. Other than that, Rufio’s set blended completely into one continuous song. The sound was boring and typical of all the other pop punk bands today, kind of like Autopilot Off. I’m sorry, but I couldn’t tell the difference between APO and Rufio. The generic sound made me want to jump off the balcony in frustration.

Sugarcult played third and I held very low expectations for them because each time I’ve seen this band over the past year and a half they’ve progressively grown worse. They couldn’t even measure up to my dismal expectations. The playing wasn’t up to par, the vocals were off, the execution was sloppy. The eye makeup and the mohawk need to go. What’s up Good Charlotte? The set list, for those who care, was: Saying Goodbye, Debbie Was a Lesbian, Killing Me, Hate Every Beautiful Day, Stuck in America, Daddy’s Little Defect, Pretty Girl (with a breakdown of Nelly’s “Hot in Here” gag me please), How Does it Feel?, and Bouncing off the Walls.

Thank God for the Ataris, because my hatred for this show was growing beyond control. The band took the stage to an audio clip from A Bronx Tale and they made this entire show worthwhile. The band’s performance was totally on. It’s a shame that it seemed like most of the fans were there for Sugarcult. The band ripped through their set with precision and consistent energy. Their performance totally blew me away and I’d definitely recommend checking them out on this tour if you get the chance (don’t bother getting there early though, you’ll save yourself from some horrid music). Make sure to grab their new disc, “So Long Astoria” when it comes out in the spring as well.

The Set List was:
Your Boyfriend Sucks
Takeoffs and Landings
IOU One Galaxy
I Won’t Spend Another Night Alone
Fast Times at Dropout High
1-15-1996
Teenage Riot
Unopened Letter to the World
Summer Wind was Always our Song
Boxcar (Jawbreaker cover that totally rocked me)
Make it Last
The Last Song I Will Ever Write About a Girl
My Hotel Year
San Dimas High School Football Rules

    My Score:

I like all these bands. This would be like a dream tour. They are all among my favorite bands, The Ataris being the least. They are good though. the guys in Sugarcult are hilarious. How can you not like a band named after a group of lesbians? Autopilot Off is amazing. Their new album Make A Sound blew me away. Rufio is awesome. Their vocalist has a good voice its just kinda hard to understand. Rufio got started because they were tired of seeing their friends feel so down so they wanted to help them and this is how they did it. Through their music. Music is such an influential thing.

    My Score:

For emo that's been done before sooo many times, Rufio had something APO didn't seem to. Honesty. Their music had a tangible quality, you almost felt like you could touch it. Rufio thumbs up!

APO...hmm...where to start? Just don't see them. Period.

Sugarcult, not a emo or pop punk band get points for being cool. They jelled well with the crowd, getting people interested, and played ROCK. Not emo, not pop punk but rock. It's been a while since I've heard a rock band (last time was Midtown) and Sugarcult revives my faith in the genre.

Ataris? What can be said that hasn't already? Kris Roe is a awesome guy, the band is amazing live and they also jelled with the crowd. No pits, but then again, this wasn't much of a circle pit concert.

All in all, well worth the 13.50

I agree with the last post. Don't judge people because of the clothes they wear. I wouldn't want someone looking down on me because of the way I dressed - punk or otherwise.

Punk rock makes you elite? A better class than everyone else? I'm confused... Who's looking down on who now, snob?

Uh... hate to break it to ya, but if I recall correctly, they signed to Columbia about a year ago.I might've actually been disappointed had I not grown out of The Ataris' mediocre pop-punk shit a long time ago.

the funniest part about these guys saying that the show was "dissapointing" is the fact that they actualy had good expectations to begin with. ataris suck. period. go cry somewhere else

    My Score:

I went to the ataris show im minneapolis, and i was pretty disappointed. the first three acts, rufio, sugarcult, and autopilot off were so bland it made me sick. even worse was the crowd that came. the place was packed, needless to say, but my friend and i were two of the only people actually rocking out in the pit. the crowd sucked! it was all preppy suburbanite kids that pulled out that never worn old shirt they bought at the warped tour last summer. I even saw one kid wearing an Abercrombie shirt! Jesus fuckin Christ! Despite all of this, the ataris played a very good show. the shitty crowd and the bland as hell openers couldnt stop the elite few of us that actually came to see a punk show from having a good time. Although, there is a correlation between bands that only write about one thing-girls, and only play the expected pop-punk sound, that has been so embraced by MTV and pop-culture. The Ataris, i believe, will become even more successful in the future. But I am not worried about them, good luck to them. They have made it this far without signing to a major label, even under their circumstances. As for the other three at the show... lets hope the main-stream doesnt catch on to them. I would hate to loath a band that i paid good money to see as much as i do Blink 182 or Sum-41.

i'm not much of an Ataris fan anymore, but i don't like to bash them because they were one of the first bands I liked. I think i stopped liking them because of End is Forever.

What the hell? If I made a concept album of the sound of my shit hitting a snare drum, then by your definition I would be a great artist. Its original and its an expression of the release in my bowels. Sign me to a major!

i met the rufio guys in texas when they came through with poison the well and strung out and they were some of the nicest guys i've ever met. really funny too. i can see how people would write their music off, but when you really listen to it, its a lot more technical than most pop punk. the drummer is really, really good too.

yeah, sugarcult looks like they just got back from a fashion show. their music blows too.

is that guy in autopilot off bald?

aside from a few mediocre songs, the ataris are boring.

Now maybe my grasp of the english language isn't as good as yours (I didn't realize "your" could be used in place of "you're"!), but I think the definition of "standards" is a level of quality you expect from something. So if something isn't up to your standards, that must mean you don't think it's very good. So why would she listen to something that she doesn't think is very good? I swear, the posters on these boards are making me lose hope for the future of the human race.

The guitarist is boring, the singer is boring AND annoying, the lyrics are pathetic and on top of it all they have zero energy. Bad Music. It doesn't matter what kind of music it is. This isn't some "I'm Mr. Punker" comment, I just think this music sucks. Just as I think the Exploited suck. Music is about originality and expression, talent is always a good thing too, but the first two are most important. Now let all the little kids come on here and tell me how I think I'm a super punk and all kinds of shit I didn't say. Like what you want, but I find this the worst kind of music, well, country is pretty bad too.

Sugarcult suck and the Autopilot Off stuff I've heard isn't bad or great. The Ataris don't sound like AP or Rufio and how can you not like a band that has a song named after a line in a Bill and Ted movie ?

oh well, the Ataris made it worth it. Even though deep down I hope they fail and go to Fat Wreck or something, I gotta wish them luck on their major label debut. The two songs they played sounded really good, seems like it's gonna be alot like Blue Skies (although I wish it was more like End is Forever, which I believe is their best album).
