We all know being the most talked-about new band of 2002 on nearly half the Jersey-based web forums is enough to make any band shake where they stand, and such was the case for My Chemical Romance - a band that combined the stylings of bands like the Misfits, the Cure, and Joy Division and added their own personal frustrations, tales of disillusionment, heartache, and dreamscapes into the mix with admirable poise. But where most would wither under the pressure of such high honors, MCR prospered, coming out with one of the most original and overall best punk-inspired albums of 2002:

The introduction to the album sounds like something out of Leitmotif (the first studio album from Dredg) mixed with an older western-type movie, and leaves the listener kind of bewildered. However, all feelings other than excitement exit as soon as the first chord of the second track bursts through the speakers - and from that moment the listener is hooked, and stays there for the duration of the record. Songs like "Vampires Will Never Hurt You" and "Skylines and Turnstiles" instantly mold themselves into your head with catchy lyrical schemes and guitar work that you end up humming for the rest of the day.

Now, after all is said and done, it's obvious this band shows a lot of promise. But the sad truth is that unless they get some decent label committment, you probably won't get a chance to hear them, considering their album is probably available in .01% of stores throughout the country and isn't even available to order online. I happened to get this after seeing them live at a WSOU-sponsored show here in Jersey, and I've been hooked ever since. I'm sure if you search far and wide you can find mp3s somewhere - and the band would want you to.

haha it is pretty funny that back then you couldnt find their music anywhere and know you cant not find it anywhere. as "mainstream" as they have become, as many goth mall kids that now listen to them, they are still pretty good. gerard way has a great voice.

this album is one of the most sad/amazing ever. before i ever really liked them; this was the album to stick in your cd player && just sit && listen to the nicely done lyrics. at points they make you want to go crazy on how beautiful life really is. this album when your down, you put this is, makes you change your mind about everything. im not fucking emo or shit like that but this album is truly amazing. on my list of top favorite cds ...&& an amazing band.

Some of their song on this album lack, but other are truly great. The songs have meaning, and are good overall. This album is way better than Three Cheers, no doubt about it. I've seen MCR 3 times in concert, and I've loved everyone of them. I hate seeing people only listening to them because they are 'oH sU HawT', and not their music.

Of course, people are going to jump in an say: "no they just suck shit lol i r so original". People are entitled to their opinion but assholes reading non-sensical bashing like that makes my retinas bleed. You call people "fucking losers" for making an attempt at a joke, and that's great. Next time you manage to coordinate yourself enough to manage a comment other than insulting anything that isn't underground or hardcore enough for you I'll make sure to let you know how stupid you will sound.

    this album is hype.
    the band are assholes.
they rip off parts from other bands such as avenged sevenfold.

my message to MCR: in this day in age of musicianship...there is a little more than stringing together four chords and raiding daddy's closest for anything he owns in black. fuck you very much. oh and btw...credibility from geoff rickly didn't really put me over the top. esp. on track number seven..i don't believe in filler baby. and that is about as shitty as any rhythm will every be. fuck off assholes.

i will reitereate what everyone who's actually met the band has said: these guys are super nice and adore their fans. i believe that if any band truly deserves recognition for their work it's these guys.
hey, i guess karma isn't all bull anyway.

This is the "girl from nashville" to the asshole from Cleveland...Did I really talk to you??? thats rather weird....
This whole thing has made us MCR fans seem mean. Really, we're nice....Promise!!
Look at it from our point of view....We love this band, and every member of it, even the tour manager and the merch guy. They are all the sweetest most amazing people in the world. They love their fans as much as they love them. They treat everyone like they are family. They consider their fans to be friends. We take offense to all of these comments because we know firsthand how awesome the guys are. And I know that not everyone will like them. Of course you are going to base your opinion on seeing them live. But what you don't see is how they really are. Onstage they are completely different. Offstage they will talk to every fan that walks up, and sign as many autographs as asked for.
If you don't like their music, fine. If you don't like their stage show, fine.
But please don't bash our friends, because I've seen much worse shit from other bands on stage.

I listened to the album. It wasn't bad. I couldn't really get behind the whole thing, but there are a few songs on there that kick ass. There are a few that blow too. For me they're a band that I'd see live if someone else that I liked was playing with them and there were no tough guy hardcore bands (The current fad here) on the bill. I'd probably buy the cd if I found it for under 15 bucks. Yeah. I haven't heard any "Hype" for them, other than when I played them on my radio show. Maybe that's because I live in the middle of nowhere. I dunno.

    My Score:

I really hope all the long comments sticking up for MCR are really written by different people, not one really bored fan. If it is a bunch of different people I have to say I'm very impressed, not that it takes a lot of effort to type a response to some stupid kids, but the responses are certainly better than the, "i like tis band a lot they r reely nice and have good songs you gys are fuckrs for badmouthing them" kind. Seriously, when's the last time any of you have read anything remotely as long and heartfelt as the few comments I'm refering to? Never probably, cause I know I haven't. They actually give me more respect for the band, knowing that they really are super nice guys and whatnot, which I'm sure most band members are. Anyway, just figured I'd give props to the few who wrote any of those long winded compliments about MCR. This is of course assuming they're not all written by the same bored person. By the way, MCR's cd was number 8 on my best releases of 2002 list.

ok, im the asshole from cleveland, so far down. to the person from nashville or whatever.. i think i even talked to you. its too bad that you're so narrowminded to think i form my own opinions on bands i see. i saw them in their hometown (well, close, the electric factory in philadelphia) and they put on a reasonable show, but not enough to win me over.

telling me this band is the "next big thing" isnt something is goign to make me like them ANY more, because i can see that they know it.

O.K for those of you making a comment on the lil comments Gerard makes.... He's JOKING! If you didnt catch that then obviously your dense... These guys are the greatest guys you will every have the pleasure of meeting... I am from Chicago and everytime they have been here they have been nothing but awsome.. My dad had a massive stroke 2 days after Thanksgiving.. I saw them a couple days later and I told Frank about my dad... that night they dedicated their set to me and dedicated a friendship song to me.. Our Lady of Sorrows.. it made me cry and after the show all of them were telling me they would keep him in their thoughts and giving me alot of love... then this last time they were here the 1st words out of Gerards mouth to me was "hey!! how's your pop?" I couldnt believe he even remembered let alone cared!! When I told him he was doing better he was genuinely happy and kept hugging me... I got to the show just as they were about to get on so I didnt get to see any of them before the show.. so after the show when Frank saw me he was like "did you miss our show??" and seemed upset about it..I told him I didnt and he was happy and asked how my dad was... I mean I have met these guys 3 times and I feel like they are friends of mine.. for them to care that much about me... then before we left they were doing an interview and Ray poked his head out of the van and was like "are you leaving??" when I told him we were he told me to wait a second so they could do the interview... When they were done they came out to say goodbye to us... when I was saying good bye to Frank he told me to keep in touch and he told me he was happy about my dad... then while saying goodbye to Gerard he just kept hugging me and telling me how happy he was about my dad and if he would have know before hand he would have said something on stage...he just kept huging me and he told me that he loved me and I said it back I was almost crying cause of the things he was saying... we also had some friends of ours with us who were in a band also (Detour) and each of the guys took their time to talk to our friends and even thought the music was different then theirs still gave them props ( I gave them a CD last time they were in town) and even suggested a show together...these guys are the best!!! and if you cant see that or take the time to get to know them and look deep into their music and realize the true message to it... then that is sad cause you are missing out on great music and great people... and don't compare them to anyone... they cant be classified!! They are MCR no one else.. and Phil!!!! Their " roadie" some one ripped on... he is also a sweet heart.. he felt left out and wanted pics with us and signed my cd LOL... he too is a great guy and he does his job well... those guys love him and so do all of us!!!!! We love you Gerard, Frank, Mikey, Matt and Ray and yes Phil and I believe his name is "Big Ruff" also!

after reading all these posts i can say i am pretty fucking homicidal. half the people on here don't know what the fuck you are talking about!! i will restate what has been said already because it just NEEDS to be said again. mcr are five of the nicest guys i have ever met. they actually care about their fans. its crazy like that. they talk to us online and hang out with us at shows and treat us like friends not like we are their paycheck. how many other bands do that? that guy that wanted to kick your ass? he should have you fucking loser! frank is one of these five incredible guys. he is a truly nice and caring person. and he probably wouldn't have beat the shit out of you although we all know you deserve it you asshole. and as for phil. all i have to say is that guy rocks more than any of you could understand. he saved my life. he cared enough to save my life. he cared enough to threaten loser hacklers like you jackoffs. he is a great guy and isn't even part of the band so should not be brought up here. i saw them on sunday at the chicago show where all the songs were about "killing the head cheerleader to get a hardon." its a joke. so you're not informed of how or why it is a joke. just know that it is and appreciate the music. now who was the fucker who said they had no stage presence? are you blind? and even if you are you would still be able to feel the amount of stage presence these boys possess. they can get even the smallest fucking crowd or the most boring crowd riled up to the point where they can stage dive in a bowling alley. that has to say something about the band. i don't know if any of the people who only had negative things to say ever bothered to go to the site and read the lyrics, but you might want to do so before you post again. they are geniuses. they write poetry. they write beautiful emotion and express it through music. and then they are even nice enough to let us listen to is. and all fuckers come on here saying bad things about them?! these guys have saved me with their music alone. just playing their cd, their wonderful underhyped beautiful cd, and thinking happy thoughts of the fireside has been whats kept me alive for the last few months. in closing, my chemical romance are gods to me and friends to me all at the same time.

I saw these guys opening for Taking Back Sunday in Boston a few weeks ago. Pretty good stuff, and their singer has a good presence and spazzes out a lot. He also swears a lot in between songs. The band gave me a strong AFI vibe, both in terms of music and the singer's appearance. "Vampires Will Never Hurt You" - just the name has AFI written all over it. But I like AFI, so its all good. I wouldn't mind seeing these guys again.

    My Score:

To the guy who thinks the MCR guys are assholes....
I was at that show. My friend and I drove from Nashville to Cleveland to catch that show, and ONLY FOR My Chemical Romance. This is the only album that has stayed in my CD player for more than 2 hours. It's been in for about 2 months.
And as for them being assholes, you are so dead wrong. They are the nicest guys I have ever met. When we didn't have enough money to get home, that guitarist that yelled at you, Frankie, gave us 20 bucks. Keep in mind they only get about 5 bucks a day to eat on, and touring bands don't bring in the big dough.
As for Gerard wearing his own band's shirt, why the hell not? It's an awesome band, a pretty kick ass shirt, and he probably only has 3 outfits to wear on the road, so give him a break. You should have taken notice that the guys in the band later were wearing Fairweather and Piebald shirts.
As for him signing autographs, it's not like he walked up to people and said "Hey, want my autograph?" THEY came up to HIM. I was there the whole night by the merch table, where people just KEPT coming up for ALL of their autographs and buying SHITLOADS of CDS. Now if that 45 minute set, which isn't even all of the album, they left out quite a few songs, can convince 20 kids to get a CD, then I guess they aren't too bad, eh?
As for "This song is about suckin' off the whole football team," yeah he said that for every song. And in Detroit the next night he said it was about "Eating a whole bag of pills and jumping throught a plate glass window." That's an inside joke, and they do a new one at every show. If you took the time to get to know these guys, you'd realize they were the funniest, nicest people in the fucking world.
So maybe you need to re-evaluate everything you've said.
Since they've been a band for about 8 months, have a record, a record deal, a tour (one of many they've had and will have to come), and die hard fans, I think they're doing pretty damn good.
The next time they are in Cleveland, why don't you go up to them and talk to them. I'm sure you like the Used and I'm sure you'll be at that show.
Better yet, go to Columbus on 2-16 and come up to ME and say that. I'll be there. Short girl, brown hair. Fuck it, here's my email toolxfadelikeasigh@yahoo.com and here is my SN: Erasethemorning. Drop me a line and we can pick a place to meet, so I can prove you as wrong as you are.
Thank you all, and good day.

one of the best fucking bands i have ever heard.

and i was at the cleveland show where everysong was about "sucking off the football team" yeah it wasn't meant to be shocking, i'm sure. they could do better than that, i'm thinking it was an inside joke or fuck just something they wanted to do. opinions are great, and you're entitled to one, but why so hurtful? yeah frank was about to kick somones ass on stage, but obviously they were too pussified to get up and do anything. we had a lot of really great people at that show, but a few asshole hecklers. no, i'm not in the band, but i did drive with my friend fucking 10 hours to see this awesome band and our awesome friends in it. they are the most hardworking people i have ever met and i truly love these guys AND THEIR POST-FRAT BOY ROADIE PHIL. who is one of the nicest people i have ever met. these guys assholes? i think not. great musicians (they've only been a band for less than a year, let me add and look how far they've come) yeah they're awesome. and they'll be real big soon so you'll be sure to sport their buttons, mesh "i'm so hardcore" hats, and shirts that will go along very nicely with your "i got these old jeans at a thrift store, how cool am i?" shitty old jeans and worn in track shoes. YOU'LL BE THE ULTIMATE FASHIONABLE HARDCORE KID!

do me a favor...... don't like them when they get fashionable. they'll do just fine without you. they have a huge support/fan base. these guys will go far.

I saw this band open for piebald, elliot, and koufax reccently and they were easily the worst live band I have ever seen in my life. There was absolutely nothing redeeming about them whatsoever. Their sound was totally boring, unorginal, and really derrivative. To me this band represents everything that is wrong with all this nu-emo bullshit. If you have never heard this band think of any reccent band that is slightly punk or emo in any way, and take that sonically and make it ten million times worse you have this band. To go along with their total lack of talent and unorginality they have no stage presence. At the show I was at they had some kind of technical problem and their lead singer, who is so ugly I'm not sure if he's a girl or a guy, was all like: "geez, I better tell a story or something" while his guitarist fixed something, and he just kinda stood there, in total silence for a good 30 seconds and didn't say anything, and then he goes "well I guess I don't have one" and laughes like an asshole. This makes my friend yell, SHUT THE FUCK UP, and this loser flips my friend off and goes "this is for you asshole" and starts playing this really boring song. Oh yea and I forgot to mention they have this roadie that wishes he was chris carraba except he's too much of an ex frat boy, what a tool, he was like beckoning on the hecklers. If this band is opening for a band you like go late to the show, I wish I did, and if you see this band you will wish that you did too.

I just got this album from Interpunk so you can get it there. I find this record as a little hit or miss as well. Do remember that this is their debut. They can always get better. It'll most likely stay in my rotation for awhile. Catchy melodies and pretty good lyrics keep me interested.

    My Score:

i had the privledge of seein them live recently, with fairweather and piebald. the lead singer wore one of the shirts that they were selling.. and he was like spitting water on the crowd and signing autographs like he was on a major label or something.. it really bothered me.

that and the fact, as a statement, he explained the song they were about to play was about "sucking off the entire football team". keep in mind this is like their third song. thats cool you konw, a little cynism.

then two songs later, on purpose or not, he did it again. then he did it for every single remaining song. (like half of their set, about 4 more).

they closed with that totally out of charater song, and he danced around the
stage like geoff, the guy from thursday.. cause it sounds like a thursday song..

    i dont like them.
their guitarist thought it was me that yelled "did you steal that from thursday or poison the well" i should have. i didnt. he seriously beckoned me upstage and then made like he was going to come after me.

    these guys are assholes.

Say what you will about them, but I really like these guys. I got into some of their songs (especially Headfirst for Halos) and then saw their live show... they really worked the crowd well.

Please don't compare them to Finch... MCR does not possess Finch's pseudo-angst, nor the long, drawn-out "SHUTTTTTTTTTT UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP" over a string section. Ew.

I like their song "This Is The Best Day Ever" but I then listened to their song "Vampires Will Never Hurt You" (or something like that) and I didn't like it at all.

But, I'd still take them over what's mostly out on radio right now.

I saw these guys opening for Piebald the other day. I was unimpressed. The singer obviously felt like the song about "letting old guys watch you jack off for bus fare" was supposed to be shocking, but the crowd sure didn't.

Ya know, it's not fair to call a band like this overhyped. They are a good band and they had some good songs, and it raised a buzz. That's what happens in the music industry, it's not a crime. They got people excited, then delivered their attempt at a CD.. and I like the CD a lot. I think it lived up to the excitement, and I definately enjoy it.

I like this album, but I don't understand the hype everyone pours on it. The songs are very hit or miss for me. I think the first three songs are the best on the album, I dig the vocal lines and the guitar work. After than, the middle part of the album is kinda boring, I only like "Headfirst for Halos." "Early Sunsets..." is the low point for me, it just wanders. The last 3 tracks finish out strongly, but it's hard to listen to an album when the middle half is just blah. Still, I think they show promise, I like the singer's voice and and the spastic squeals they through in once in a while.

When i saw them, though, i along with the majority of the crowd (keep in mind this was at a The Used show), didn't know who they were when they got on stage, but at the end of their set, i was surprised no girls threw their bras up there or something... they had like the whole crowd in their hands.. it was crazy.. but then again.. god the crowd at that show was stupid.. good thing it was only $1 for the show.
