AFI - Sheffield Hallam, NMB

The evening began with my dad taking us to the show by car. One hour of awkwardness awaited us as we got in. He, as I predicted, made some lame attempts at humour, maily concerning "punk rock". Needless to say, he wasn't amusing.

When we arrived in Sheffield, after some messing around trying to find the NMB, we got out and joined the queue. After waiting in the freezing cold (and I cleverly forgot to bring a coat, damn) for around an hour, we were inside. We took a look around, it reminded me of my local club at home, pretty small and squashed. I took a look at the merch area, was amazed at how full it was. After walking around a little more and watching a bit of the opening band, I decided to get some merch. I must've waited around 30 minutes to be served, but I got 2 shirts, so I was happy.

After that, we headed back into the concert area and made our way to the front of the crowd, sensing the second band were almost finished. Once they went, on came AFI's roadies to set up, which seemed to go on forever. I was wearing the 2 shirts I had just bought, on top of the 2 shirts I already had on (one short sleeve top over a long sleeved one) so I was already pretty hot. After a while, it was time for AFI to come on. The crowd were chanting their name, until the stage lights went out.

Suddenly, Jade and Hunter bounded onstage, followed by Adam. The crowd went insane. The band (minus Davey) started off with Adam playing a fast drumbeat while Jade and Hunter bounded around omstage like crazy. The crowd went wild again, and then Davey came on, then havoc (haha) broke out. Davey started off the chanting (to the uninitiated, it goes 'through our bleeding, we are one') which got everyone into a frenzy. After Strength Through Wounding, the band shot into The Prayer Position, which caused shouts of delight upon the opening riff. Everyone sang along, I barely heard Davey above the crowd, which was cool, but annoying. After that, Sacrifice Theory was played, which was when it got really heated.

Davey did some crowdsurfing. Right as the song was playing, the girl next to me (who, incidentally, had been jabbing my eyes with her 7 inch mohawk all evening) was beginning to pass out. I helped her, along with some other people. As we were trying to move her backwards, I felt the whole crowd surge forward and some hair and in my mouth (...). I looked up to find Davey Havok around 3 centimetres from me, with everyone around us going seven shades of mental. I ripped some of Davey's mesh shirt by mistake (I was pretty taken aback to have my favourite singer appear above me). In the confusion that followed, Davey landed on around 3 or 4 people, including me. As everyone was pushing to reach him, they forced the people next to me onto the floor. I could feel my knees digging into someone's side on the floor, and them shouting for help. Note that Davey was even closer to me at this point, and was actually below me, on top of these people. The next few moments were a little hazy, all I know is that Davey got out of there and had to haul myself up on someone else's shoulders, having to drag my body out from under two people's legs.. not fun, I couldn't stand up on my own. It was getting quite frantic by then, so Davey went a little easier for a while.

The band then played Over Exposure, which was cool, everyone sang along again. Then we got Girl's Not Grey, which sounded great live. I was proud to be one of few people in the crowd to join in with the verse and chorus. Then Ever And A Day was played, one of my favourites, so that was great.
A Winters Tale passed quite quickly, I'm not the biggest fan of the song. A Single Second created the most frenzied moshing of the evening, it was great, and the whole place was singing. This Secret Ninja was a cool surprise, and Morningstar was great. During the song, as tacky as this sounds, Davey looked towards me while I (like everyone else) was singing along. He stared at me, and I stared back, still singing the song, which was cool, it felt like we shared something in the song, which was cool.

Somewhere in the setlist (I cant remember exactly when), Lower Your Head And Take It In The Body cropped up, which was great, we were speculating in the car as to whether AFI would play any of the older stuff. The Despair Factor was good, everyone joined in one the 'one..big..dark...room' part. The Hanging Garden was cool too, one of the highlights of the show. Then we got Midnight Sun, which started pretty weird (I wasn't sure if it was or it wasn't Midnight Sun until the vocals came in) but it went down well, especially the Baudelaire part, which sounded cool, seeing Davey kneel at the drumkit to sing.

Then a rousing Days Of The Phoenix was played, which really had us singing again. Then the band left the stage, and some roadies came on for a minute. Then, of course, the band came back on to finish off with God Called In Sick Today, one of the best tracks, and of course, Totalimmortal (which messed up somehow, Hunter's bass went wrong and when Davey sang the start of the second verse, there was only him and Adam playing, but it was okay because Davey laughed and they continued on anyway). They left the stage, I got out of there and had the best Coke I have ever had in my life.

    Simple Plan? Look, Pop-Punk is the new pop. Avril Lavigne. Sum 41. Blink 182. Good Charlotte. New Found Glory. And the rest. It's for those chicks who think they're 'punk rawkers' to listen to, and the kids who follow the trends to suddenly think they're 'rockers' cos they like those bands. And of course, the labels (Drive Thru, etc) and the bands are milking the current trend for all it's worth.

    It means people assume if you have your parents at a show, you are not a "cool dude". This must be because parents are not k-rad cool people, and I disagree. I like my parents and am glad you and your dad have a good relationship. If my dad wanted to give me a ride to AFI, I'd be like FUCKING SWEET MY MOM AND DAD ARE GOING TO ROCK AND MY DADS GOING TO SNORT COKE OFF MY MOMS TITS! BEST SHOW EVER!

    And most clubs are 110 degrees in the dead of winter, so if your not sweating in a club even if your standing in the back in a tank top under a ceiling fan, its not a rock and roll club. Its a "venue". We (the monarchial punk rock we) do not approve of said clubs, but occasionally wallow amongst the musical plebes if necessary. Clubs have big motorcycles behind the bar, and flames, and book bands based on name alone, and the walls are painted black which make it ten times as hot but it has to be black cause black is rock and roll.

    I cant remember if im talking about punk rock or stoner rock anymore so, yeah, AFI's no bongzilla, but uh, yeah, you didn't pick the venue. But make sure to tell davey to quit booking shows at places where you can spot goth chicks drinking zima. Zima is never goth. Quote me on that. Zima is never goth.

    What the? This kid went with his dad?! I mean, I'm 22 and if my dad was into punk rock then I'd bring him.....since that's not the case I don't need to worry though (lol),....but shit, this kid must be 13 or 14 years old. It's cool to be into a band at any age, but chances young kids won't take bands seriously and look at it as more of a fashion show than real music.

    hey listen, jackhole. It isn't up to you whether I watch the support or not. If you acually care, Sworn In sucked, their sound was poor, and Face Tomorrow were quite good, melodic and had some nice tunes. If it wasn't for the fact that I wanted merch (which took 30-45 minutes to get) I would have watched their set.

    As for this bullshit: "Now you have nothing to change into after the show, and you look like you just rode a log flume ride. Great." Well, thanks for the advice. I just don't remember asking for it. I already explained why I didn't want to just hold the shirts, and, once I left the show, I wasn't particularly sweaty. If you sweat so much that you look like you rode a log flume, maybe you should see a doctor or something.

    As for the not wearing a band shirt at the show of said band rule, your not only lame but impractical. The shirt you have on during a show gets soaked in sweat and cigarette smoke, slam dancing or not, thus why you save the new shirt so you can change into a fresh one after the show when you need one. Everyone knows this, its common sense. Of course, none of you were there to dance were you? And i dont mean mosh, i mean dance, have fun, get close enough that if you dont dance, other peoples sweat cling to your shirt.

    Now you have nothing to change into after the show, and you look like you just rode a log flume ride. Great.

    i didn't think it was that a bad a review. sure he could have at least mentioned who else was on the bill as that is customary when reviewing any show. but overall, he did a good job of describing the atmosphere, the setlist, what happened during the show, much better than a lot of other show reviews on this site.

    Okay, this was my review.

    I didn't actually take him inside. He waited in the city. The venue was two hours away from my home, and I can't drive, I'm 16, hence me needing a lift. I couldnt afford the train.

    I don't idolize Davey like that, it was just a cool moment. Some of the people here take things too seriously, hell, if a band you like has more than 7 fans then you'll accuse them of selling out anyway, so what the fuck? I'm allowed to enjoy myself.

    yeah, I know about the whole 'not wearing the shirt of the band you're seeing' "rule", but seriously, around 75% of the people there had AFI shirts/hoodies on. I would have held them, but I didnt want my arms down by my sides the entire night, and I didnt want to risk dropping them, I'm not particularly tall (5"11) so it was heavy going.

    The coke, I meant Coca Cola, of course..

    The opening bands; First were Sworn In who I missed because I was getting my shirts - the main reason for getting them was because shops round here don't sell AFI shirts, the punk scene sucks here, so I got them while I could - and the next band were Face Tomorrow, which I didn't bother mentioning because:
    A)I havent heard of them before so I have no idea if they played their songs well or not
    B)I only heard half their set and wasn't really paying attention to them anyway.

    What? Surely you're contradicting youself? Unless you mean cos I didnt mention the other bands. Listen, it was an AFI show. I didnt go to see the support. If you want fucking Sworn In reviews or Face Tomorrow, go find them, and dude, they'll be under 'Face Tomorrow', not AFI, there's a hint.

    the new afi is wierd. I wont say its horrible, because its growing on me, but it is basically the same song 12 times, its just a mature rock song instead of a hardcore song 12 times. It has its moments, but theres alot of filler. Basically theres no one kickass song, theres no standout tracks, so they tend to blur into AFI group vocals, davey, clean strummed guitar break, davey going "oh" back into the chorus 8 songs in a row.

    I'm assuming this kid has got to be 14 or 15 because of the following facts:

    1) He actually dragged his dad to the show. We all know his dad hated every second being there.

    2) He stared at me, and I stared back, still singing the song, which was cool, it felt like we shared something in the song, which was cool. 'Nuff said.

    3) He wore 4 shirts, two on top of the other two he was wearing. There's nothing wrong just holding your shirts while up front...unless you're too scared to lose it. hahahaha. *ahem*

    4) No mentioning of the opening bands which makes this whole review even worse.

    This score gets a 1 not only for the review but for the band as well.

    That guy sounds like he wanted to rip off davey's shirt, interesting review. Actually pretty crappy review seeing as it left out alot of other things.....it kind of scares me to see what AFI shows are going to be like. I haven't seen them play in a small venue for a few years...that time was good but each time i have seen them latelly they have sucked

    How old is this reviewer, 15? If so, it's rad that's he's into writing and reviewing and all that stuff. If not, it's pathetic that he got his Dad to take him to the show.
