I haven't seen the inside of the cd case, but the cover artwork doesn't look that bad... Reminds me of the Jade Tree website.

I posted the last comment, I just wanted to say I'm not telling you how to do your job. I'm just saying that the label guy has a point in saying the review may be a little unfair. Also, I noticed the criticism of the band name too, which is also irrelevant.

I must admit that kicking the review off on a negative note, by referencing things that have nothing to do with the music, is a bit of a cheap shot. I'd emphasize the mediocrity of the album rather than the "boring art work", and "name-dropping" Leave the comparisons if you like, but throw in minor stuff like art work and producers at the end.

I don't see the problem with this band putting out their album on a european based label.... so there is an ocean in between, so fucking what? isn't it all just about the love for the music???
I'm into the support your scene stuff, and i don't care wheter a band is from the USA, Japan or Europe, the music is what makes the scene not geograpics

On this occasion, I'm backing Marijn for sure. Scott, you just use completely lame and irrelevant arguments to prove your point. Once again, you can like it or not and that's you case, I respect that. Just treat those guys and the label with some dignity and not piss them of because of simple artwork and name. The Netherlands have some great bands and I'm sure Marijn and his label ad quality to the current crop of music coming out of our small country.

I think we could talk about it for a long time and maybe I can't really make my point because of my sucky english but I have a hard time with the way the review is written, I have no problems with you not liking the album, the album totally turned out the way the band wanted it to be and we're not a label that signs the most populair bands around, we just sign what we truly love, being european based or US based.

Anyway, thanks for responding. I don't think we need to talk further about it, both our points are clear and luckily enough everyone has a different taste.

Next time I will try not to response on reviews ;-)

And to the guy 4 comments down, who said I've mentioned my Top 10 list or something in "damn near every review" I've written this year-
I've written 25 reviews so far this year. After re-reading them all, I found the following references:
From Rainer Maria's "Long Knives Drawn" review: "I can say with assurance that this will be in my Top 10 of 2003 list"
From Rufio's "S/T" review: "this won't make my Top 10 list or anything at the end the year"
From This Afternoon's "If We Gave Up Now" review: "will probably end up making my "Punknews.org Mixtape" at the end of the year."
From Ted Leo's "Hearts Of Oak" review: "If this was any other year, this record would be a lock for a spot in my Top 10"

...and that's it. 4 reviews out of the 25 I've written this year thus far. If that is equivilent to "damn near every review," then shit, what would 20 out of 25 be?

Okay, I have absolutely no hard feelings towards you guys at Emplane Music. Marijn, I've talked to you before on IM, and you're a stand-up guy. I didn't say your label sucks, nor did I say the Netherlands as a whole suck either. Please don't put words in my mouth. It's just a bit unusual for a band of this style to be from the US but to have their debut come out on a European label. I think it's cool that you're trying to spread the music beyond the ocean, but the whole situation is a little unorthodox.

This being said, I review things based on what I feel about them. I feel that this band is largly mediocre, and that was my main goal of the review. However, I do think that "Stop-Sign Racing" is amazing, and I want people to at least download that song to get a taste of the band's potential for greatness. I think these guys have it in them, but it's just not there this time around.

Marijn, it really bothers me that you say I don't like your label. When you first IMed me and asked if I would review your releases, I said that I listen to and review everything fairly, and you said that's all you ask. Well, it's what you got. This isn't the worst thing to come out this year, and it certainly has potential [which I've already said]. But why should I praise something that I don't feel warrants my praise? Wouldn't that reduce my credibility as a journalist and a reviewer, and turn me into more of a shill?

I suppose let this be a warning to anyone who wants to send us stuff for review: just because you give us free CDs doesn't mean we'll give you good PR. We call it like it is.

Dear Scott and the few people that posted a comment.

My name is Marijn and I am a co-owner of Emplane Music. It's not ussual to expect a comment of someone who's involved with the label of the band that's reviewed but I just wanted to respond on this piece of writing. Also we're the smallest label around and Scott doesn't like us obviously so what the hell, we don't have a reputation to risk or anything, also this is just a personal writing by ONE of the co-owners.

anyway, basically everything I would like to mention is already mentioned in the post below.
I would like to thank Scott for reviewing one of our releases. We're just a small starting label and we're working very hard to get our name out worldwide, yes Scott, we're europe based and our bands are from the USA, sorry about that. Altrough I didn't expected anyone to use it as a critical point.

Like I said we;re small and working to get our name out, we can only send out a small quantity of promo-packages because of our budget, that doesn't mean we send out a few promo-packages but it does mean that we're not able to send out the quantities that most of the establed labels can do. The result is that we hope to get as much positive feedback as we can get out of the stuff that we've been sending out and lucky enough most people DID like it, sadly enough you didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped and there is nothing I can do to change that. It is something I can respect, also as a starting label we shouldn't be afraid for some critical reviews.
BUT
This is a site that is visited by tons of people that hear about our band and our label for the first time and I'm kinda sad that your review is their first impression, not because of your view on the band but because of the way it is written. You're pointing out some things that quite amaze me.
You're the first to complain about the bandname, once again that's your view and I have to respect it, altrough I do not understand it since there are tons of bands with worser names if you ask me.
Another complain is about the way the promo-sheet is written, you have to blame the label about that, cuz I wrote it, it is something the band can't help. Just like they can't help that we're born in the Netherlands.

Anyway, I could go on for a long time, but I just want to end with wishing Punknews.org all the best. This is one of my favorite sites.

Jees, how frustated are you when you're gonna complain about the fact that the label is Netherlands based?
Also what can the band do on the fact that the label mentioned the recordingcredits in the promo-sheet?
This is the label's second release from a quite unknown band and I guess they put a lot of time and money in it, isn't it quite possible that they are very proud on this band and the way it is recorded?
And yes, like Kurt said, you have to take the time to listen to it, it still grows on me everytime I listen to it and they fucking rock.

Even when this is not your favorite release I wished you showed some more respect to the people that work very hard for this, I've been talking to the guys from Emplane Music and they are fucking dedicated, would you have the guts to release some of your favorite bands as a 19 year old kid and based on the other site of the world?

I was mailed this a few months ago...I kind of enjoy it. Yea, it's not uber original, but it's good. It'll grow on you Scott, it took awhile for me, but before I knew it, half the choruses were stuck in my head. Stop Sign Racing is quite the song I agree.
