Disclaimer: Against All Authority is a real punk band. Don’t be surprised I’m making that distinction because these days, there is so much fabricated middle school pop rock passing as punk, its disgusting. If you like real punk bands and are sick to death of songs whining about heartbreak, ex-girlfriends and elementary school humor, then read on. If not, then I suggest the Simple Plan or Blink reviews will better suit your interests. Against All Authority. The name says it all. They’re pissed, hard, and fast and they’re letting you know it. AAA is a political ska-punk band hailing from Miami Florida. These guys have been active in the Florida scene for years so its not like these guys recently popped out of nowhere. As the title suggests, “Nothing New For Trash Like You” is a collection of hard to find songs from old 7”, compilations and samplers. Being a fan of any band you love, you appreciate the bands efforts to compile everything into one neat package so you don’t have to spend forever trying to find everything they’ve ever released. And just in case you think the band released the songs as some sort of underhanded money making scheme, well, you’re right. They’re donating proceeds from this album to the Tooth Fairy Project- a research study that looks to link environmental radioactive pollution with cancer. What do they sound like? I would say this band is more in the vein of Choking Victim/Leftover Crack/Operation Ivy rather than say a Less than Jake as the punk and ska as well as the lyrics are much more darker and uncompromising. Combining snotty, combative, almost popeye-esque vocals (as mentioned in the other AAA review on this website) courtesy of lead singer/screamer Danny Lore, Joe Koontz’s hardcore buzzsaw guitar attack, and horn blasts a plenty, this band rips, attacks, skanks and slamdances their way through 18 tracks with reckless abandon and lightning speed. Faster than Michael Jackson going through his yearly facelift (ok, maybe not THAT fast, but fast enough so you’ll need the liner notes for many songs), Lore (with middle finger firmly planted in the air) spits out stories from such topics as police brutality, government injustices against Native American Indians, the ethnic cleansing tragedies in Yugoslavia, and gritty city life. The fact that they actually have interesting and informed things to say on a variety of topics helps separate AAA from other punk bands. And their songs for the most part don’t all sound the same which can’t be said for a lot of punk bands. Their songs can be incredibly catchy where one minute you’re gettin’ yo skank on, then the next minute they dive right into straight up ‘77 style hardcore punk. Right from the very first track “Just an Obstruction,” you’ve got classic AAA dropkicking your ass across the room with its harsh yet catchy ska-punk hybrid. AAA continues to surge forward, giving you only a few moments to catch your breath before decimating with you with their next track. Some standout tracks are “When it Comes Down to You” “Above the Law” “We Won’t Submit” and “Court 22.” But really, they’re all great. No skipping songs on this record. Throw in some badass covers of the 80’s hit “Angel in the Centerfold” and Propagandhi’s “Ska Sucks” and you’ve got an excellent release. The cd insert is very cool as well with lyrics and photos of the band playing live plus documentation of a little spat they had with the other AAA (American Automobile Association). But you may be asking, if this is a compilation of songs from various periods in AAA’s past, won’t the lack of flow and continuity ruin the album? I say the songs stand on their own so that this mixture of songs takes absolutely nothing away from the overall quality of the cd. Yea, these guys are that fucking great. I will say some of you may have trouble getting used to Lore’s snotty, confrontational vocals. But its all good. Besides, you don’t want to sound like Quentin Tarantino’s twin brother from New Found Glory and be in a band called Against All Authority now, would you? So if you like adrenaline pumping, fast as fuck, ska-punk with a political slant, then go get this cd (in fact, get all their cd’s because they’re all fucking good). Not only is it for a good cause, but you won’t stop listening to it for years. Decades even. Shit, your grandchildren will be talking about this cd when you pass it along. I guarantee when you put on this cd, you’ll immediately get the urge to start thrashing and dancing around like a lunatic and start spontaneously screaming oi! and hey! haha, oh i know this was a bad review. my new revised score. Great band, good album, bad review Quite unfortunatly you sound like a high school cheer leader. I'm prettty sure AAA don't need your highly "emotive" writing to fellate their ego. I don't like this album much, and I'm a fan of ska-punk in this vein (Choking Victim, Suicide Machines, Operation Ivy....). The songs blended together on this disc, without any really standing out, and it was hard to get past the singer's voice. When I saw them live, they were amazing (I was especially impressed by the bassist being able to sing lead while effortlessly laying down those intricate ska bass lines), but I've never really gotten into much of their recorded material -- especially not a B-sides collection. 8. This AAA compilation kicks ass. The only song i don't really care for is "Bakunin". And the lyrics for "Just An Obstruction" really kick ass. I can't stand all the amerikan pride fucks screaming "love it or leave it", and "this is my country... blah blah blah". I'm sure the Native Americans loved this country... but we just killed them. And the majority (not all) of the U.S.-Pride folk do not even know what that flag they're waving stands for. How can someone with a confederate flag, with a shotgun and a pick-up truck (what's a stereotype?) be waving that flag??? Boggles my mind. yes, this was biased, aaa is my favorite band and i realize 10 is too high. i wish to correct myself and give it a respectably good 8. Not gonna bash the review, but you left out one other cover song too. In On Your Joke is a cover of a song by Christ on a Crutch. Also, the horns on 'Angel in a Centerfold' were not LTJs horns, they were the same exact horns on the entire Destroy CD, except the last 4 songs which were a sole trumpet player that left the band before the rest of the full lengt was recorded. This is an incredibly biased review. No, AAA album deserves a perfect score. Few albums do, but they put on an exciting, energetic show, so I'll give them that. i saw these guys play at sxsw, and they fucking sucked as much as they did 6 years ago... bands need to learn they need to grow a little, especially when they start in the fucking shitter "the ten is for destroy what destroys you. Ive yet to really like anything after destroy by AAA that grabs me like it did. Its so good. just insanely good. if you like any AAA, you'll go crazy over destroy." i stopped reading after "gettin' yo skank on." Every time I turn on my tv lately theres some new bullshit band like new found glory popping up, i'm glad there are still bands like AAA out there this cd is pretty fucking good for a compilation. i would start with destroy what destroys you (if you can find it) but getting this cd isn't bad at all. aaa is coming out with a new record soon too. "i've yet to hear destroy what destroys you" i thought all fall down was weak and repetitive save a few songs i met danny once and i didn't get any bad vibes from him...? what are you talking about...??? Hey CallingLondon, I'd probably go with 24 Roadside Resistance, but it seems like everyone has a different preference. Basically buy whatever you can find, they're all good. i thought being punk meant actually meaning what you sing about...cuz if so, aaa is definetely not punk...meet some of the guys (or just one in my case), you'll find that out really fast i'm guessing this isn't a good album to get if you don't own any previous ones. what would you suggest? I could care less about what's "punk" or not, but this album is pretty damn sweet. I just hope they don't phase the horns out on the new album. That would suck. the "Destroy what Destroys you" cd by AAA is sooo much better than this one, but this one is still good. AAA is the shit. I think my favorite song is 'louder than words' I'm pretty sure that the horns on "Angel in the Centerfold" are done by Less Than Jake's horn section i still think "24 hour roadside assitance" was a fuckin great disc. All Fall Down was good, but after listening to that you dont need another AAA CD ever again, they all sound the same. I have never heard a band rehash themsleves so many times.And not liking this band does not make you not punk. There are no rules and regulations on how to be a punk. Fuck, whats the big deal with being punk in the first place? Is it some sort of reward given as obedience to the scene? Well where your trophies proudly kids, you have listened to enough bad misinformed music to earn it. wonderful sense of reasoning there jackass. if you don't like this band, then you don't deserve to associate yourself with punk or anything related to punk. as far as giving this a pefect score, yea, it was definitely too high. i thought 'all fall down' and 'destroy' were better. Okay, this album's good, but not quite that good dude. No way you can give an album of b-sides and what not, with lets face it, pretty shitty recording, 5 stars. I'd save that for 24 Hour Roadside Resistance. That being said, this IS a pretty kickass album. Can't wait for a new album, and hopefully tour from these guys. was that last comment in english, or am i just too tired to get it? ideally, no one lame enough to slam you cos you missed something that minor likes aaa apologies for the "threat" song not giving credit where its due. ok. you may all start slamming the review if you wish. there is no band quite like against all authority. my favourite song by them is pestilent existence. its very bad ass. coverS, i meant to say its a cover cd rocks, but you forgot to count 'threat' among the cover. its from the aaa-pist split. outside of that, good review. this band sucks. they were never good and it's a shame that they're still together. |
