Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

I’ve got a feeling that all the teenage girls will be screaming over these guys soon, if they aren’t already.

This record is polished pop-punk with hooks up the wazzoo, in a cardboard case plastered with pics of the band showing off their tattoos and Converse low-tops. And with lines like “I want to hate you / half as much as I hate myself” even the young “emo” girls may fall for them. Check the back of the CD to find titles like “The Pros and Cons of Breathing,” “Sending Postcards from a Plane Crash (Wish You Were Here),” and the Most Über-emo Song Title Award goes to “Reinventing the Wheel to Run Myself Over.”

Here you’ll find a sound reminiscent of Midtown as well as Chicago peers Knockout and Starstruck, with a dash of Taking Back Sunday style lyrics. Seriously though, these guys have some good tunes if you can get past the unoriginality. Warning: the song “Dead on Arrival” will have the lyrics “This is side one / flip me over / I know I’m not your favorite record / The songs you grow to like / never stick at first / so I’m writing you a chorus / and here is your verse” stuck in your head, whether you like it or not. These guys follow the tested formula with hooks galore, studio-polished vocal harmonies, and the uptempo-breakdown-uptempo roadmap, all with production up to the par with some major-label pop punk records.

Some of the better tracks include the old Saves the Day style “The Patron Saint of Liars and Fakes” with that one squeaky high note leading into the sing-able chorus, punk ballad “Saturday” (despite the out of place thunderous screaming in the background), and the aforementioned “Dead on Arrival.” All the tunes are decent, they just all give me déjà vu.

Even though they are at no forefront of anything, these boys will go far with their tight and catchy pop punk, played from behind an emo attitude. Despite the pleas of many of you who I’m sure will comment on the board, Fall Out Boy may be making it big soon.

    My Score:

this is a great pop-punk (or whatever genre you'd prefer to call it) album. lyrically, it stays honest and emotional without the pretension of some of fall out boy's more recent work. musically, it's straight ahead with memorable licks and hooks. the guest spot with the dude from mcs is a nice touch too. overall, a great (and fun) album. definitely a grower

Posted by KlaymanKavalier on 2007-12-23 13:31:31

I will give it to them. They have really good hooks for those not looking for any bit of depth in music. But musically I get dissapointed. The song "Thanks for the Memories" sounded like a commercial song to me at first making fun of them. The chorus is a bit catchy, but please, honestly, dig through your stack of cds and find My Chemical Romance's album "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" and listen to "To the End." FOB totally ripped the vocal melody straight from them and the string orchestra sound is as if they took sheet music from MCR, changed keys, and didnt distort it. That is all. Goes from passion to fame so quick and easy doesn't it?

Although i'm not a big fan of the whole 2000's mall punk thing, i liked FOB. They are fucking sellouts, as the shitty last album demonstrated, but they are (were?) very talented and this album is very good.?One last thing about some comments: you guys that say that this band is gay because they sing about girls are just stupid. The emo culture is plain shit, but has also dumbed some people down.

OK.... I'm sorry... this is my personal opinion... normally I don't like to rag on other people's favorite bands... but... Fall Out Boy SUCKS they are POSERS Pete Wentz is a FAGGOT with a huge ego, they have NOOOO talent, they name their songs gay-shit stuff that has nothing to do with the actual song, they AREN'T EMO AT ALLLL they aren't even pop-punk, they're like total POP-SHIT and I HATE them!! Everyone thinks they're emo and moody and brooding because they listen to fuckin' FALL OUT BOY well maybe you should get you HEAD out of your ASS and find some REALLY GOOD MUSIC. The GOOD music hardly ever gets played on the radio anyway. So.... sorry for offending anyone... really... but, there's much better music out there. Sorrry.

Seriously. People have got to stop just dismissing bands because they are considered "emo" or "pop-punk". It's not about what slot they fall into but the music, it's about what the music means to you. This album is full of great catchy songs you will be singing for days, and it's not just that the lyrics are catchy they are actually well thought out and writen. I am pretty sick of all you "hard-core punk" kids putting down anything that doesn't sound like The Clash (although they were amazing) they are long gone now and things are different. This band deserves to go far.

It seems that people cannot get enough of an ego boost than when bagging on an up and coming band. Personally, I think that most of the songs on this cd rock. I think the lyrics are kind of funny and cool. These guys probably have the best sound when comparing other bands that are in the same category. I don't know about this "pop-punk" or "pop-emo-punk" crap, I just know that when you stop putting labels on everything and comparing it with bands that you think have never sold out, you will find more bands to enjoy and not sound like such a whiny bitch.

humm.....Pop Punk Emo....I think those are kids who go to Hot Topic and dress like the fashionable "punk" and listen to Pussy Punk (aka Pop Punk) that suck, not even GOOD pop punk (if that even exists) and then just act like complete pussies when any kind of "emotion" comes along and drag the whole bloody thing out....I know someone exactly like that....Its sick...

Oh yes and getting back to the band:
    -Kind of Boring
-All the music kind of sounds the same
    - lame lyrics

but besides that, their not that bad...they do sound Emo though...

    • Project Rocket Spilt, as well as the;
    • Fall Out Boy demo.

...I will continue to comment on Fall Out Boy as I buy and wear out their albums. And yes, I highly recomment this pop punk album.

Wow, can't understand you all. This is by far, the best pop punk album out. It is not "pop punk emo." What in gods name is that? Don't start creating your own genres.

As a matter of fact, it dosent get much more pop punk than them. New Found may be a bit more but they are right behind.

After listening to this album once, every song stuck in my head. It is just too good. I saw them live too, they are wonderful.

Oh, and why are people so against pop punk reviwing pop punk albums? Its rediculous. This reviews are so biased they are almost sickening to read.

FOB is getting big and fast. The album is good but seeing them live is what makes them so popular. I saw them last november opening for LTJ and Yellowcard and they had a mediocre set but, I've seen them twice since and they've become more amazing each time. I just hope MTV and other shitty radio stations don't catch on and ruin them. Emo girls are one thing, that's all good but, when the stupid ignorant chicks hear bands on mtv or kiss fm and come to concerts they're a real pain in the ass (see: a Dashboard concert)

Then I read this review and got to thinking that this song might just be the standout hit song and that the rest of the cd is gonna suck. does anyone have this cd, and if you do, can you tell me if "Dead on Arrival" (or either of the 2 other songs on their mp3.com page) is representative of the album? So far I've heard everyone say that this is a shitty band (but what else should I expect from this site). so keeping in mind that I actually like pop punk and I like one of their songs, can anyone convince me to buy/not to buy this album?

FOB is simply good too. its as if anythin wentz is involved with is good. all the creeps in fob are fucking amazing, they all play there instruments so well, and they can all do it while jumping, spinning, and going crazy. just because you other kids arent part of a band half as good as fob, you talk shit. support chicago, support fob. get good then talk

The word on the street is that a majority of this album is written by Sean O'Keefe.

Oh, and the fact that the cd sounds NOTHING like them...

Its a great studio album, but its just proof that FBR is going downhill.

I mean they signed August Premier..

What the fuck, the worst band in Chicago. I wonder how much Skippy from Allister had to do with that one.

This band's lyrics are not good, nor did any band member play guitar or bass on this record. That is a fact. If you like this band you are a complete loser. And by the way, who the fuck puts their first and last names on the cover of an album?

if you dont have anything nice to say dont say anything at all. i for one am getting sick of all the shit talking about any band. im pretty sure while fob, ko, spitafield, and many other chicago bands are making it, you will still be sitting in front of your computer screen thinking of who to bash next. until then why dont you fuck off, and go walk around the damn shopping mall.

    My Score:

To anonymous down below....The band that FOB played with in January and stole their album title from was Divide by Zero. Before that show, FOB's album was supposed to be called "evening out with your girl" or something along those lines. That's what I was told. But after that show, it was "take this to your grave" which is a DBZ song. It was obvioulsy stolen.

There are NO good pop-punk bands in Chicago. FOB, Knockout, Startstruck all suck. FOB sounds like New Found Glory. These guys sell out the Metro because there's a huge scene for little girls who listen to Good Charlotte, Blink182, and smaller bands like Knockout. They're completely seperated from the rest of the scene around here, for the most part. There's a huge crowd difference from almost everything else and the "pop-punk crowd" around here. I figure that's how it is in other cities too.

Someone should ask this band (or Spitalfield, who might've been the culprits) why they felt the need to steal a bass cab from a poor DIY venue in Provo.

im sorry to say but.. this is one of the best pop punk bands to come out of Illinois. Why do you think they sold out the metro? There also isnt that much of a poppunk scene here.. We have like 4-5 awesome pop punk bands.. Falloutboy, mayfield, firstclass, 7thgradeunderdog, and starstruck. i dont even like the last two.. but these bands.. they are all i hear about.

To the anonymous guy 2 posts down:
There's currently 33 reviews in the queue. I try to post live reviews right away so they're still topical, and as for new releases, the reviews that are of CDs that are mailed to us *for* review get precedence on posting. Dischord doesn't send us stuff to review, so their stuff doesn't get bumped up front. Take it up with them.

Your review will be up sooner or later, just be patient.
