Reviews

Teaser EPs are a common necessity for many labels that need to hype some band who already has an upcoming album that everyone is already looking forward to. They're not bad ideas either - sell a few previews of the new disc and perhaps buy a couple new fans in return. My only gripes with teaser EPs are the fact that many times, these EPs come out just a month before the album anyway, especially as of late (see: Rufio - s/t, NoFx - Regaining Unconsciousness). I understand the fact the EPs are just a marketing tool used by the label, but we're going to be hearing the new batch of songs soon enough anyway. However, the labor of the upcoming No Motiv (say it like "motive") full length has only just entered its third trimester. Several months is a reasonable amount of time to savor the miniature dosage of tunes for the time being.

One of the most underrated bands on the scene today (the lack of a review on the EP's release date only validates this point), No Motiv has been playing good honest emo rock for a good eight years now. Their departure with Edge Recordz also found them leaving their stripped-down, emo-tinged, by-the-numbers skate punk for a more mature, relatively more downtempo, but also full sound with Vagrant Records. Trevor Keith's production work helped metamorphose the band into what they are now.

What they are now leads me to a confused state that questions why they haven't yet jumped to a major. Whether the majors haven't come calling or No Motiv just isn't interested (the latter reason would befuddle me considering they left Edge for Vagrant), to me, either reason bypasses logic at all costs.

Lola finds No Motiv picking up where they left off - in a way. The sound seems to comprise a more-than-solid hybrid of ...And the Sadness Prevails and Diagram for Healing, and this time around they've added some cool riffs to boot. "Grey Notes Fall," set to appear on the upcoming Daylight Breaking, is an amazing reminder why they are so good, with the vocals, perfectly raw, kicking in the intro. The catchy "tell me" line has plenty of band members making their contribution with either their version of said line or of course filling the potential hollowness with a solid core of melodic-yet-grinding power chords to keep the pace going.

An acoustic guitar helps bring in the closer (demo version), ironically titled "Keep it Going," with the six-stringed silhouette acting as a backdrop for the entire song as patience does prevail with the electric version of the aforementioned kicking in soon enough, giving it the fullness it conveys throughout.

The timeline of No Motiv's career has included a change in sound that resembles the change in seasons. And when the autumn comes, there will also be a season of change when this group should finally receive the recognition they deserve.

I've been grinding my fucking teeth over "Daylight Breaking", I can't fucking wait. This EP is awesome, I've been a fan since I heard them on the first "5 Years..." Vagrant comp. "Diagram..." is a great album, too. I don't think they're that emo, I still consider them a punk band, no matter what.

this is one of those bands thats been around for awhile and just always been solid. I think people recognize their "underdog" tag and then they finally get their due credit. So Im glad to see it happening for this band, they're good guys in a good band.

Lola is short, sweet, and right 2 the point. Can't wait for the full length from No Motiv in the fall. Class act all the way around. Viva No Motiv!

    hey dipshits

no motiv hasnt put out an album on vagrant in two years. in other words WAY before the interscope deal. and since they did just re-sign to Vagrant. Obviously, somebody--everybody---is happy with the relationship.

as for the EP. the way i heard it, Vagrant decided about 3 weeks ago to do it so that the band would have something to sell on the road with Rx Bandits. idiots.

I saw No Motiv with RxB and the crowd loved them. As for the "drive thru crowd," most of the kids there were either ska leftovers or 17/18 , so that point isn't really valid, either.

    wyzo,
what do you mean diagram was possibly christy? the song "savior" is about his girlfriend and "born again" is about his parents choosing to stay together rather than divorce... are those the songs you are talking about?

Eh, RxB doesn't draw the "typical" drive thru crowd though, at least not the times I've seen them. But it is true about No Motiv being put on the strangest tours. I saw them with h20 once.....

    NARDCORE!!!!

Just yell this at them the next time you see them and see if it'll still get a reaction...

Saw these guys a few nights ago. Got a chance to talk to a couple of them. Nice dudes. This new ep is fucking great. "Grey Notes Fall" is a solid reminder of just how talented No Motiv is.

    My Score:

you were seeing the Rx bandits and the crowd didnt like no motiv, no kidding. The drive thru crowd wouldn't. No motiv is always paired with the wrong bands. No motiv is a rock machine, there more akin in spirit to the current equal vision bands. did you listen to how hard 'shells' rocked?

well, in that very same interview they told me that they had just signed a contract which would put them on vagrant pretty much the rest of their careers. But I dont know how hard Vagrant would fight if they wanted to leave, hopefully they try to.

these guys are pretty solid... i really liked diagram, and sadness was cool too... i haven't had time to check this out but i will.

    My Score:

Without a doubt No Motiv should find a new label, and after the upcoming LP I believe they will have satisfied their contact with Vagrant.

As for "why aren't they on a major," Interscope owns a large chunk of Vagrant, and does a lot of marketing support for them. Yet, No Motiv is still getting screwed over. Who knows, maybe when Vagrant sold to Interscope No Motiv thought they would get a better chance.

No Motiv rocks. Nice age guess homo (35?) - they're in their 20s. I guess a 24 year old looks 35 to a 12 year old, huh? Plus, they're more genuine than you'll ever be.

I saw these guys with Rx Bandits and holy shit did they fucking blow. A bunch of 35 year olds still whining about girls. It was sad to say the least and the crowd seemed to agree as everyone just stood there staring as if to say "what the fuck?"

they're not an emo band they're a rock band that's it and they're great at what they do.

didn't layaway plan break up like 2 years ago?

After seeing the video for the song "Brand new day" on that Vagrant dvd I thought No Motiv was headed for bold new territory. Well after hearing this ep they are clearly not....just boring emo. I sure hope Brand new day is on the new album though.

oxnard boys, sadness was great, as was cynical even though they kind of disavow those songs. Diagram was a bit less filling, but if the demos are any indication, this should be a good record.

i interviewed these guys last summer, really good guys. I felt bad cause they are kinda down on themselves because they aren't as big as their counterparts, but they should be. I really really hope this album does well for them.
