"This band doesn't play hardcore anymore, they suck now."

Shut up. Just shut the fuck up. All this constant, incessant whining about the hardcore scene and how it's going to shit because hardcore bands add other musical elements to their sound. Just stop it. If you don't think this new CD by Philadelphia's This Day Forward kicks some major ass, then you are not listening to it loud enough. In Response, out on Equal Vision, shows yet another leap forward from this band. Their first two CD's were crunch/scream fests...and as impressive and amazing as the first two CD's are...the last two, Kairos, and now In Response are that much more impressive. The CD starts off with White Picket Defense System which showcases their new style...lyrics half spoken, half sung that builds to a heavy scream filled breakdowns that pack a punch. It's almost like a heavier, more angry At The Drive In. In fact the first 4 songs follow this structure, yet, each one sounds different and unique. the second song One and One is an amazing track followed by The Breath. On the fourth track, # In the Past... On the Ground, they play this almost trippy, meditative intro. And just as you are about to sit down, close your eyes and begin to drift away...the song explodes into "Now it's time! Time to Fly!" and you are shaken by the ferocity and power this band has.

Yes, they do have a few odd, experimental tracks on In Response and these track will leave fans asking questions about just what the hell the band is doing...but make no mistake, This Day Forward can still bring the mosh with authority. Tracks 8,9, & 10 Abandon the Abbreviated World, Nouveau, and Voice are all complex mashes of melodic hardrock and pure emotional hardcore complete with mind blowing screams from Mike Shaw and huge bombastic breakdowns by the band behind him.

This CD kicks ass and there's no need to press the panic button just because a band doesn't scream their ass off on every song. Creativity, power and passion reigns supreme here and This Day Forward are clearly an incredible band who have a very bright future ahead of them.

    This is a great album by a band that left us too soon.One on One is the best song on the CD IMO.

    This is the first album I've heard by "This Day Forward", and as such I had no preconceptions about the album. I personally thoroughly enjoyed the 2 quiet tracks as they prevent the album from becoming too repetitive. That said, this album is far from repetitive anyway. Filled with punchy bass and drum onslaughts, and a singer with a well utilised and balanced voice, I found this to be a really entertaining album. As far as people saying its nothing like their old stuff, which apparently was heavier, yeah sure its not all that heavy...it has its moments, but never in the leagues of Spitfire for example.

    oh also scott, could you change your 5 stars for green day "warning" while your at it? honestly, i think its the same case as this. you love green day, so you give it a 5, even though that cd is far from amazing, at least to me.

    this review seems to deserve more than 3.5 stars on the rating. why does everyone think that this cd isnt allowed to have 5 stars? what if it is deserving? i havent heard it yet so i cant say, but theres nothing wrong with rating a cd high. if its anything like the "kairos" ep i think it deserves 5 stars.

    I agree with the man below me. Too much ass kissing and reviews from people who are in love with a particular band. I'd love some reviews that break down the songs and let us know what to expect. That way we can figure out if we're interested or not. I swear this should be common sense, but common sense ain't so common anymore...

    One of the most overrated bands ever. This album isn't great. I'd go as far to say it isn't even that good. Its just ok.

    Nothing new. Nothing that hits you just right. So they used to play metalcore? Every band that decides to stop playing metalcore and tries something else isn't transformed into some sort of indie god.

    They're just decent, plain and simple.

    Lets see someone actually review here. Seriously. Do you know what the word review means? It doesn't mean "Blow your load everywhere and eat the bands asshole."

    I know music is subjective, unless of course the words "Vanilla" and/or "Ice" are in the artist' or song's name, then it always becomes objective. That being said, they are always highly opinionated, and thats to be expected... but seriously, lets try and really REVIEW something from now on. You can like something, but it shouldn't prevent you from reviewing it well.

    i'm seeing apparent pressing needs of filling the review archives w/ this day forward releases being filled out...2 updates, same band. ahh its cool filling out the discography is fun and this is a new cd anyway

    I know they sound nothing like At the Drive In you dope! I threw that line in because it's the golden rule of review writing...If you don't know how to descibe the music, just say "At the Drive In" and everything will be cool...

    I got this in the mail the other day, and while I've never heard their older stuff at all, I dug this album. A lot of it reminds me of Glassjaw [circa-"Worship and Tribute"].

    Wow, that was a good effort trying to throw in an At The Drive-in reference, props to this guy. I wanna make a new rule right here, no one is to use an ATDI reference in a review, unless its for the Mars Volta or Sparta. Speaking of which, TMV 24th June, Fuck Yeah!!! Hope someone good reviews it.

    You're a complete moron. i haven't even heard the whole record, but after hearing "white picket defense system" i don't even want to. the new shit is so weak. not to mention it sounds absolutely fucking nothing like at the drive-in.
