Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Since, as always, I'm waiting till the last minute to write this, and I'm struggling to come up with a tolerable opening, I'll circumvent that problem and talk about Every Time I Die.

When my girlfriend used to live in Hamilton, Ontario, there were a few decent record stores, but none as cool as the Sonic Unyon store. There, I met a guy named Chris, who had just started a fledgling hardcore label called Goodfellow. I was concurrently starting up Punknews.org, and he graciously handed me a stack of CDs. Among the pile of somewhat intense metalcore he was releasing, a lone EP stood out in my mind: "The Burial Plot Bidding War", the debut release from a Buffalo band called Every Time I Die

(Side note: Was there any chance that paragraph wasn't going to end with Every Time I Die?)

So anyway, it stuck out for me, my ears virgin to most of the more underground metalcore bands. Sure, I had my copy of Destroy the Machines and Progression Through Unlearning, but a lot of the more metal-tinged bands were completely unknown to me.

The EP was a totally messed up kick in the head. Dirty sounding, without any of the precise cleanly produced guitars of the Victory metalcore bands, as heavy and intense as any of them, and with a sense of humour that I fear most straight edge kids lack.

(Side note: I said most. I'm sure you spell your name with 'X's on the outside and that's funny, right?)

So addicted as I was to this one, I was there pretty quickly to pick up Last Night in Town, which was more of the same, but with an even more pronounced melodic - and sarcastic streak. But what really struck me was that it seemed like the band had a conversation a little like this:

Band Member 1: What's the best part of any hardcore/metalcore song?
Band Member 2: Why the breakdown of course!
Band Member 1: Right! So what if we start a band that's all breakdowns
Band Member 2: We'll make a zillion dollars! We'll be rich! I'm going to buy a boat!
Band Member 1: Uhm.... ok. You play drums. I'll sing.

So, now that I've satisfied all expectations that I (a) Know the bands back catalog, and (b) think it's great, I can handily discuss this new record. The main questions that you should ask yourself are the following:

a) Is it a major progression? Has the band grown and evolved as artists and creators?
b) Did they manage to push the boundries without compromosing their integrity?
c) Who gives a crap about a) and b). Does it rock?

In the interests of time, I'll go straight to (c). Yes, Hot Damn does in fact rock. It reunites every element that makes Every Time I Die work, and pushes it further. It's heavy, fast, and chaotic. It's lyrically sarcastic, and vocally caustic. It's the most accessible and catchy record Every Time I Die has made, but it hasn't compromised anything that older fans care about. And the breakdowns slay.

So, yes, Every Time I Die has returned with another head smashing record. It is dirty, dirty metalcore.

And it is awesome.

These dudes jam, that's all there is to it.

And yeah, they were oddly slower live, I thought maybe it was just an off night or something.

But hey, I love my fast stuff (Pig Destroyer, Spazz, Orchid, etc.) but one has to appreciate the groove sometimes as well.

Although I would consider myself more of a hardcore kid than metal or noisecore or whatever people call this band - they put out a really good album. I can't stop playing this in the car and singing along to all the sarcastic lyrics. The album is meant to be played loud and if you feel the need to dance...go for it as almost every song has great two-step and mosh parts.

the bled's "pass the flask" completely unseat's this album from the saddle of the #1 position where so many people are putting every time i die. maybe if every song on here didn't sound like the one preceding it, or sound like the one directly following it. saying of the year...

i can't believe you think this is better than 'pass the flask.' it's not even close ... it has like 2 songs that stand out from the rest on the album. i must say, 'godspeed us to sea' is pretty badass though.

I've only seen this band live, and they sucked more cock than a 13 year old girl from the suburbs (those of you not from the suburbs, 13 year old girls from the suburbs suck A LOT of cock; and no, I'm not a pedophile).

Maybe they're like These Arms are Snakes and they sound good on record, but are absolutely horrible live. Whatever.

This an incredible record. This doesn't sound anything like DEP and has it's place as a good technical band. But who even really cares if they're technical, it's good either way. Great lyrics, no tough guy or emo bullshit. It's a big mix of metal/punk/hardcore/rock and roll. It's a hell of a lot better than PTW, FATA, and shit like that. Best hardcore album of the year!

Every time i die broke jack osbourne out of rehab!

    but i jest.
Everyone seems to have a very extreme opinion on this band, either they absolutely love the band or they hate them. Usually a comparison of DEP or some other tech band comes in, too. I will be honest, i dont really care either way. Tech is one of those things that you can only take so much of, and then you want to listen to something insipid and simple, like a green day record, or bob dylan. i have heard tracks off of this, not the whole thing, and my impression of it was "sounds like every other ETID song." moreover, it sounds like every other band doing the techmetalcore thing.

Sonic Unyon is the only good thing that's come out of Hamilton.

Oh sure, the Bulldogs were the best AHL team, but what do you expect when you're drawing talent from 2 NHL teams? How are you going to do next year, when the Oilers take their minor-leaguers to Toronto Roadrunners?

And the CFL isn't even worth talking about.

I saw these guys last night with Thursday, This Day Forward, and Murder By Death. The three other bands made them look like a JOKE. They were like a less talented Dillinger Escape Plan. The highlight of their set was one of the guitarists playing rockstar and throwing his water bottle into the crowd, where it nearly hit a guy who threw it right back at the guitarist.
