As I write this, hurricane Isabel is bearing down on the east cost. It promises to bring thundering rainstorms, powerful gusts of wind, and coldly quiet interludes in the eye of the storm before the thundering resumes as it passes. And as the rain begins to fall, it seems oddly poetic to be writing about Thursday's newest record War All The Time.

Without becoming too abstract, the record shares many parallels with the imminent storm; the barreling guitars, the immediacy of the lyrics, and the oft imitated but rarely matched vocals. The structure of the record also resembles the aforementioned storm; exploding into view with "For the Workforce, Drowning" and building into explosive energy, then suddenly crashing into the gentle "The Song Brought To You By a Falling Bomb."

As before, Thursday's most striking characteristic is Geoff Rickly's anguished wail; while many acts have dabbled in his vocal stylings, Thursday never allows it to turn into another rhythmic device, delivering genuine catharsis with every scream, something most of the Thursday imitators would be smart to remember.

After all, since their 2001 breakthrough, Full Collapse, the band has proven to be one of the most blatently copied acts around; while they certainly didn't invent the mixture of singing and screaming on that record, they certainly proved the most influential manipulators of it. Often forgotten was the strong songwriting, and excellent musicianship, which is probably why so many of the Thursday-lite's just didn't get it. The screaming was never the point. It wasn't about contrast, or a juxtaposition, or an irony. It was the emotional climax to the lyrical and musical content, and if you listen closely to a Thursday record, and their nuanced use of the sound, you can clearly hear what so many other bands are doing wrong.

I think Thursday was aware of the fact that their trademark dynamics was getting the attention instead of the songs themselves, and so the leap in songwriting prowess is apparent. In many of the tracks, things are more toned down, but the dynamic range is clearly larger. Take the first single "Signals Over the Air", it opens with a straightforward drum pattern; the clean guitars enter, accompanied by Geoff's whispering vocals. The song gradually builds into a heavy crescendo, before returning to the softness from before.

In the same vein is the likely crowd favourite "Asleep in the Chapel" which opens softly as so many Thursday songs do, but continues to grow, shifting back and forth from the bombast of the sing-scream interplay, and then hits a anthemic chorus. But many of the tracks veer sharply from the expected path; like "The Song Brought To You By a Falling Bomb", which has minimal vocals over a piano.

While the band is frequently lumped into the so-called "screamo" vein, there is very little in common with the maligned genre on this record; neither musically, nor lyrically. If you get past the "hook" of the band, you'll find emotionally complex, aggressive and forward moving music that you cannot miss.

the comments here make me very sad to see how few kids actually know ANY of the history behind the screamo genre.

I mean, people actually said this band was an "early" screamo band and an "influence" on modern screamo.

    Like....wow.

I went back to my Thursday cd's after finding an old Thursday t-shirt in my room. However crazy and ridiculous the immitators and the whole shitty screamo thing gets, Thursday is still good. I feel that these guys actually mean it.

Somehow I just see them going more arty and abstract in the future. With any luck, Thursday will become the next Radiohead -- a band turned off by their own popularity.

War All the Time isn't Full Collapse, but I still think it's a great album. Some songs just passed like wind though my ears (and that's why I did not rate 5 stars). The music itself do not describe the emotion as much as Full Collapse, but the lyrics are still amazing. I actually do wish that "This Song Brought to You by a Falling Bomb" was sang more emotionally in the album (because I can't help loving both the music and lyrics).

I have to almost completely agree with the person who wrote the previous review:

"i'm honestly very disappointed in this record. i wasnt a huge fan of FC, but i respected it. this record seems rehashed and trite. same loud/soft dynamics in every single song, same vocal patterns in every song, same bad screaming in every song....so much of that stuff that it seems monotone to me. and dont even get me started on that piano song...wow, thats bad. it coulda been an amazing piece of the record, but it comes off so contrived and powerless. i dunno, maybe i dont read enough bad highschool poetry to get into this..."

possibly with the exception of the highschool thing. I really liked all the songs from their first album and Full Collapse. They felt real, this feels so forced. Music comes from when you have an emotion... I can't see these guys hanging out, and honestly being compelled to write a song called "This song brough to you by a falling bomb". sad.

I can totally see little Bobby Jones at his computer, hands down his pants, huffing and puffing with a tear trickling down his cheek as he spends an hour getting fatter and defending his favorite "emo" band, Thursday. At the same time on the other side of the country, young Jim McGee is simply foaming at the mouth, equally intense in his defamation of said band, armed only with a bag full of the ever-so-articulate "suck asses" and "go to hells."

Meanwhile, all I can imagine is one side going "raaaaarrhhhh" and other other responding "waaaaaah" as I spend five minutes typing this message and thanking god that I just spent a day that started with a game of soccer in the park, followed by a quick bout of house cleaning, an hour or so with the latest issue of the New Yorker, a trip to the record store, diner at El Cancun, drinks with friends and finally ending with a passionate romp in the sack with my girlfriend.

So which side are you on? The "raaaarrhhhs," the "waaaaaahs" or the people that stopped reading this after the first line because they thought it was a complete waste of time and would much rather be having crazy sex with their significant other?

I think Thrice is a group of intelligent, well-read, and generous individuals... while Thursday is a group of self-pitying bastards. The only guy I like is the 30-something guy who is always ignored in videos, interviews, and promo pictures. I think he is the lead guitarist. Anyway, he rocks. The rest of the band blows cock.

I do feel sorry for that old guy who is ignored though... just because he doesn't fit the "emo" stereotype...

And hey, why should I have to go online to get the lyrics? What the hell is the point of having a lyrics booklet then?

And the resaon you can read most of this booklet in particular is because it's not one of the worse cases of this particular brand of album art. I was really trying to talk about the practice of this style of art on lyrics page, and that in some cases it is unreadable.

And I know a lot of people do this, so let me just get it out of the way-

Take the extra second to type out the "yo" in "you". I'm not your mother, and I'm not your grammar/english teacher, but it looks stupid with just one letter. I hope people agree with me because this has gotten way out of hand.

Best hurricane CD: Alkaline Trio - Maybe I'll Catch fire. It's a great CD to be really bored to.

That said, does the song War All The Time kind of piss people off? Just throw in a crapload of effects until it doesn't sound like their song anymore and THAT's the final song? I had the same problem with Artist in the Ambulance.

And...Conversation topic: did Full Collapse change the state of emo? I would certainly say so. It went from like Promise Ring to From Autumn To Ashes

I can't say this is a bad CD. I can't say it's the greatest either. I guess I was expecting more...

I am glad they did something they wanted to do, without it sucking ass. No, they didn't do as much screaming and stuff, but who cares? It's a solid release. Geoff still writes some great lyrics and the music doesn't suck. I guess I was expecting something more along the lines of 'Jet Black New Year' from the EP.

I think the more and more I listen to this, I will find more things about it that I love.

    Hey Heidi, consider this:

Let's say I have a school projec to make a poster detailing information about various wars that go on in the world.

Would it make my poster better if I covered up all the text with pictures of blood and guns? Would I get a better grade because the pictures fit with my theme? No. If I put pictures of blood and guns AROUND my poster, it will enhance the poster, making it more attractive to an observer. If I cover up the text, I stop people from reading the information I assembled, which was the WHOLE POINT OF THE PROJECT.

And we who complain about album art never said it was a bad album- so don't jump the gun.

I have jumped on the Full Collapse bandwagon last year and adored it. It was my audio bible. That being said, I had ho-hum expectations for WATT. Don't get me wrong, I didn't think that it was going to be bad, but I knew it wouldn't even touch Full Collapse.

Needless to say, I was right.

That's not to say that this album sucked, it was great, amazing, but no masterpiece. They start off with a bang in For The Workforce, Drowning, and it continues until after War All The Time (except for Signals Over The Air and Marches And Maneuvers), but the last two tracks were duds, and not the way I wanted the album to end. Look at Full Collapse... their second to last song, How Long Is The Night, was so powerful.

"I'm falling down, I'm falling down, and you're not here to break my fall. I shut my eyes when you're around. I hold my breath to kill the sound (of your voice)."

I'm sorry if the lyrics aren't exact, but it ended with me saying "Woah...", and then the ambience-type music as the last track, much like the last track of Waiting, "Where The Circle Ends", which felt like the music you hear from film movie theatre when the credits begin to roll.

I didn't need the melodic-ambience music. If they did it, they would just be copying the formulas of their first to albums, but I wanted something to end it off that will leave me with my jaw dropped.

All in all, definately buy this album, no question about it, just don't expect Full Collapse: Part 2.

And if the same people did Thursday's and AFI's artwork, those people really need to come up with new ideas for cd art.

okay, as someone who does album artwork for bands, i feel the need to comment on the whole reading lyrics thing.

i for one think the art is amazing. one may notice similarities to AFI because the SAME PEOPLE DID IT. just read "artwork done by..." and it's morning breath, inc.

yes, there are parts where you have to strain to read the lyrics, but if it's not worth it to you, then don't. if everything were so blatant and plain, then artwork for albums would be pretty boring. i think the packaging for this album, thrices artist in the ambulance and afi's special edition are among the top albums of the year as far as artwork is concerned.

yes, the finch album artwork sucked, but then again, there weren't too many meaningful lyrics there that needed to be read anyways.

To the guy three posts below, the spilled blood and randomly highlighted words and randomly capitalized words is not a new thing at all, and AFI certainly did not come up with the idea. This is oldest and worst trick in the book, even though I love this album. I love the artwork, I love the music, but the lyrics pages are stupid.

What the hell is the point of having lyrics to be read if you have to strain yourself to read them sometimes? Why are half of the words blocked off? If you didn't want me to know the lyrics, why don't you just not put them on the album.

Like I said, this is an oft-copied formula for album booklets, and it should be stopped immediately. I don't mind really cool artwork, as long as it doesn't get in the way of actually being able to read the booklet.

Just an example of another band that does it- Thrice's Illusion Of Safety booklet is stupidly hard to read. Big white cross outs on the page, blocking half of the words. Not that this also wasn't an amazing album.

    You get my point.

by the way... does anybody besides me see a very large resemblance between the interior of this cd jacket and that of the afi sing the sorrow one? you know with all the weird highliting and putting stuff in bold and the spilled blood look and the wierd lines and faded pictures? uncanny too me. smells like thursday ripped somebody else off for a change instead of being ripped off of.
