“We weren't the first but were holding our own; 10 years ago the seeds were sewn. A song in your heart gets you up when you're down. like the songs we play we love this sound, we're just like you standin' in the crowd.” - MxPx

Way back in the hey day of 1997 I ventured off for some fun with my new high school friends on a cold November night down to a little venue in Pittsburgh known as Club Laga. We arrived to a sold-out crowd of about 500 kids. Most of whom seemed to be the same people who where at the Suicide Machines show a few days before. I don’t remember too much about the opening bands or even who they where for that matter, but as the night’s end drew near a band named “MixPix” took the stage -- No, just “M-X-P-X”. Plowing through their songs of pop-punk bliss the band seemed to have everyone in the club dancing, bouncing, and singing along. I was clueless to any of these songs, but it was definitely a type of music that I enjoyed. Songs like “Chick Magnet”, “Punk Rawk Show,” and “Move to Bremerton” run in my head for weeks to follow. That Christmas I scribbled on my letter to Santa MxPx’s album “Life in General.” A record I think all of us have heard at one time or another. From there I was hooked, I went out and stocked up on their other records and have followed the band since.

MxPx holds a part in our scene as being one of those bands that have paved the way for similar bands such as Blink 182, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, and just about everything on Drive-Thru Records, but at the same time they maintained some credibility. The band hasn’t changed much since their high school days of playing snotty pop-punk tunes about religion, teenage troubles, politics, and of course girls. Aside from being picked up by a major record label and a natural maturity in their music and lyrics the trio has stuck to the same basic formula that got them where they are today.

Enter their new album “Before, Everything, and After.” My first impression of this album is that it’s terrible, pop-trash, and easily forgettable. However, I can’t submit that as a review and I know I am far more articulate than that and can explain something that I dislike to back my opinion. So if you care, read on…

The sounds that enter my ear from the minute I press play come off as a very different MxPx. The “pop” is scooted up to first class and the “punk rawk” is left in coach. The band has taken the route of the artists they helped influence and look hungry for that taste of fortune and fame -- As they have since appeared in Pepsi commercials and even in the special features for the re-release of “Animal House” on DVD. The first actual song “Play it Loud” is Mike Herrera professing that the band just wants to play music and essentially sings a very upbeat number describing the band. Although it is a tolerable song you can see the direction the band is taking. As things shift to “Well Adjusted” which is a very juvenile song that I swear Simple Plan wrote. Dragging on, “Quit Your Life” is their attempt at a soft acoustic tune, which seems would fit better on a John Mayer disc than here. “Kings of Hollywood” is that song you expect to hear in a Disney movie like Shrek, although they still claim “Left Coast Punk Rawk.” Classic MxPx songs are provided though, like “Brokenhearted,” “More Everything,” “The Capitol,” “You Make Me,” and “You’re Not Alone,” but even these songs just don’t feel right.

Out of the sixteen tracks, two filler, nine just seem out of place and forced for an MxPx record. I can’t hold the band responsible for wanting to take the route they did, it’s been ten years since they started out maybe a change was needed. Unfortunately it’s not something that sits well in my ear drums. For your enjoyment there is an enhanced portion of the disc containing wallpapers, buddy icons, and all those other usual goodies. In review, MxPx’s latest effort “Before, Everything, and After” is a very forgettable set of tunes that I can almost guarantee will not be spinning in my CD player past today.

    poor mxpx.

they were god, for all those other albums, why did they have to change their entire genre? they even had benji from Good Charlotte(more like BAD charlotte) in two of their songs. besides, the album was just plain mushy, like, i think he was getting married, cause they were all love songs. as a personal hater of wannabe punk (good charlotte, blink 182, simple plan, etc.) i think this album was a real dissapointment. goodnye, MxPx. im sorry to see you go.

loved this record. i was a bit suspicious at first because i heard it was a big leap from their other stuff, but then again, MxPx have always have been consistent in never making the same album twice. after the pop hooks made me me want to listen to the album in the first place, i am still enjoying the album after many months later on its merits of being a quality collection of songs. i have no time for the punk purists or any of those people who dismiss this on grounds of "not being like old MxPx" or "sounding like Simple Plan", this album is good-time, happy, feel-good music. true, some tracks are weak-ish, such as The Capitol and More Everything, but the first 8 tracks are pure bliss. nuff said.

I agree the article is very biased. Someone who hates pop-punk shouldn't be reviewing it.
I like to think I have a very open mind about music in general and I try to keep it that way.
However, MXPX have churned out lots of albums and I can't see any difference between them. They all seem so similar.

At least they should change their sound a bit, encorparate new ideas and sounds in but no. And the fact their music is generally poor means this band is going no-where in my estimation.

This is a somewhat biased review. I think mxpx is still more credible than most of the pop-punk shit out today. They still rock.

    My Score:

This is without a doubt the most mature effort from this great band. The whole album is very upbeat and lighthearted. Even the classic songs about heartbreak (take "Brokenhearted" for example) have a very positive vibe. Musically they're exploring a whole new territory. They still sound as tight as always, but the addition of keys and strings on a few songs make this album very rich in texture. The song that most clearly shows the band's growth in this sense is probably "Quit Your Life," and the background vocals create a very overwhelming atmosphere.
Although the sound is new throughout the whole album, there are tracks that resemble the more traditional MxPx style, like "Well Adjusted," which is a very catchy tune full of energy, "More Everything," and "You Make Me, Me." And of course, the first single off this album, "Everything Sucks (When You're Gone)," deserves much credit as well, for being a very well crafted song with a nice and catchy melody.
All in all, this is a very solid album, and I have no doubt that we'll continue to enjoy great music from this ever-evolving band. Congratulations to MxPx on another job well done.

    My Score:

After 10 years of defining the pop-punk genre, MxPx releases Before Everything and After, an album that changes the pace a bit. Even if it is not quite what their fans are used to, this album is so much fun that you will forgive them for departing from the formula.
With flashier producers in the mix this time around (Tom and Chris Lord-Alge), the signature MxPx sound gets tweaked and enhanced, bringing some unusual but welcome variations to the standard punk fair.

Starting things off, we have the rallying chorus of “Play It Loud” and the playful and hook-heavy “Well-Adjusted,” which many fans will recognize as the song from the Diet Pepsi commercial. These are followed up by some slower (by punk standards) tracks, but Mike Herrera knows how to craft songs that will resonate at any tempo.

“Brokenhearted” is sure to elicit both sympathy and grins with lyrics like, “You said you never really felt a thing, you said you didn’t like the way I sing… I’m not crying, I’ve got something in my eye.”

“First Day of the Rest of Our Lives” is a romantic confection with a chorus that’s sure to get stuck in your head, and it’s followed by “Everything Sucks (when you’re gone),” a theme most people can relate to. The punchy rhythms are accented by a funky guitar riff that almost sounds like it could’ve been borrowed from a country song. But don’t let that scare you! This won’t be showing up on CMT anytime soon.

“Quit Your Life” features acoustic guitars, piano and even strings as an accompaniment for this completely sweet song that could be considered a grownup sequel to “Move to Bremerton.” Even though this is the slowest song on the album, it’s my favorite from this album. Just the perfect love song. The piano resurfaces on “Don’t Walk Away,” another ballad.

“More Everything” is about wanting “more kissing in the car, more staring at the stars, more color outside the lines, more undivided time,” no doubt inspired by life on the road that takes the band away from their loved ones. “You’re Not Alone” promises that “The time is near when I won’t need this phone,” further establishing the difficulties of long distance relationships.

However, “Kings of Hollywood” proves that life on the road isn’t all loneliness, with a killer bass groove and lots of energy as it tells tales of crazy nights on the road and on the town. “The Capitol” keeps things moving as well, and sounds like it could’ve been a b-side from the Ever Passing Moment sessions.

The album closes with “You Make Me, Me,” the kind of song everyone wishes someone would write about them. The punk vibe we’ve learned to expect from MxPx comes through as a backdrop to the lyrics “You make me laugh, you make me cry, you make me live, you make me die.”

This is definitely MxPx’s most mature and varied effort to date. It’s clear that they put a lot of work into the album, and diehard fans should be just as pleased as new listeners.

Make sure you check out the enhanced portion of the CD for some humorous and enlightening features, including behind the scenes video footage and the music video for “Everything Sucks.”

I have been listening to MxPx for years, and I recently bought their CD at one of their concerts, it was like the third time I had seen them live. Maybe I expected too much from them, because I was less than impressed the first time I heard "Before Everything & After." Yeah, "The Ever Passing Moment" was a little poppier than I was used to, but this album is pushing it. They did a great job and put on a kick ass show though, so what can I say?

    My Score:

I have been a fan of the Pokinatcha Punks, AKA Magnified Plaid, AKA MxPx for several years. I own most of their albums, except for At the Show and a couple of their EP's. I am on MxPx's email mailing list and found out about BE&A from their site. As a devoted fan, I bought my copy and LOVED it. MxPx has done some great albums in their time, and this is one of them (-! The first and last tracks are snippets from the rest of the album, sort of samples. Then the Punkin' kicks in, with lyrics such as "Lock me up in a mental penitentary" (one of my favorites) and, of course, "Everything sucks when you're gone." "Quit your Life" is a good song, although I'm surprised to see them do an acoustic song in the middle of the album, and I think it would have fit better as a closer. All things considered, MxPx's "Before, Everything, And After" is generally good punk.

MXPX is getting better every time I hear them. They are really maturing with their music and lyrics. Driving beats and lyrics that really make you feel and understand. I started listening to MXPX 5 years ago. They are the reason why I listen to punk music today. When I first listened to "Before Everything & After" I didn't really like it. You have to love Mxpx. They're so amazing in their ability to wow you. I love their new sound. I think it is throwing some old MxPx-ers off, but don't be alarmed. This new sound is a good thing. Being a big fan myself, I wouldn't push their album if it sucked. For your reassurance it doesn't suck. Buy their old albums, Life in General or Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo, if you want to hear MxPx is all their glory (which they rightfully deserve.)

Ok i'll admit the first time i heard this cd i was a little disappointed that mxpx had somewhat a news sound. but now after listening to it a few times, i realized that they changed for the better. there sound has really matured, and although their songs arent as fast as before, now they are better written. they also appeal more now to the punk pop demand out there, with benji madden from good charlotte and jordan pundik from new found glory featured. mxpx is a great band with fun to listen to music about all different topics ranging from past girl friends to their faith in god. over all, i think before everything and after is a great cd, and i would recommend it.

I can say that I liked the sound on their older albums such as "Slowly going the way of the Buffalo, or "The Ever Passing Moment" a lot better than this one, but it still gets an A in my book. I give them props for venturing off and attempting a new sound, even if us old school MXPX lovers still jam to their earlier albums.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 19, 2003 at 12:06 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

The thing that sucks about people who think they like a band that's obscure is that they resent it if they change or become "un"obscure. I respect anyone's opinion based on the music itself, but you can't dislike a CD because it's a) different than the ones before it or b) sounds a little more like something you may hear on the radio.

The new MxPx record, Before Everything & After, rocks harder than any other MxPx record - and I have 'em all! The music is still the same "left coast punk rawk" that has indeed influenced many young bands. And, yes, including Simple Plan and "just about everything on Drive-Thru Records." But isn't that what it's all about? Every band has Web sites and does radio shoes and has a bunch of merch printed up to sell at shows - all to get more well known.

I enjoy bands like The Starting Line, Home Grown, New Found Glory, and Allister from Drive-Thru Records as well as other bands like Good Charlotte - who I saw working their butts off on the east coast before they were signed. I personally say "HOORAY" for bands that rock out and get popular. As long as they don't get like Blink-182 - whose Cheshire Cat CD was the soundtrack to my high school years - who are STILL playing songs for 17 year olds.

MxPx's music has matured along with the band, and all the fans who've been driving around listening to their CDs with the windows down and the radio all the way up since, well, forever! Listen to "Move to Bremerton" on Life In General and then listen to "Quit Your Life" on BE&E. It's the same subject matter, but handled in such a different way that it's obvious that the band are all grown up.

Don't listen to music obscurity snobs who are jealous and possessive over bands they think are "theirs." If you truly like anything, you want to see it be a success!

This is definitely the perfect CD to add to your MxPx collection!!!

The reason why I got this was because of their new single "Everything Sucks." I definitly think you should check out the video. It's hilarious. You may have heard their song "Well Adjusted" a while ago on the diet pepsi commercial, you know, about a kid finding his parents in the mosh pit at an MxPx concert. They've got some of your other favorite rockers like the Halo Friendlies, Benji Madden from Good Charlotte, Kris Roe from the Ataris, and Jordan Pundik from my other favorite band New Found Glory. people change and mature as they get older. as are mxpx and their music. there is absolutely nothing wrong with experimenting, adding new things, and making old things better. just because they don't sound like they did on 'life in general' does not mean this new album sucks. if you want all your music to sound the same, more power to you. but don't rag on something you know nothing about. not all songs on this album are a 10, but name one that is. the fact that you want all their albums to be replica's of life in general, show that you can't deal with change, and that you aren't a true fan. like a fine wine, mxpx gets better with age.

Old sound or new sound it's still mxpx. At the core, the guys that love music, write great music, and I love everything about it. No matter what Mxpx still rocks and they put out music that I love!It may take time for everyone to warm up to it but you'll get there and you'll be happy you did. and to the guy who said they should go back to the hardcore sound of renaisance ep: renaisance was not hardcore and not oldschool.

The MXPX boys are back, alive and kicking with their newly released album ‘Before Everything and After’. Over the past 11 years audiences all over the world have screamed, moshed and even crooned with the ever maturing, now men of MXPX. This album is the 12th studio recorded release, and it doesn’t look like Mike, Tom or Yuri will be slowing down any time in the future.
Released on the 16th of September, we see a lower midriff shot including Mike’s tattood arms, his hands in his pockets and a belt buckle sporting the MXPX logo, but that’s just the cover. With songs like ‘you make me, me’, ‘well adjusted’ and ‘brokenhearted’ we see and hear them grow as a group. This album (as many others) stick to the genre of newly aquainted love, broken hearts, loss and squandered youth, but with a style all of their own, MXPX make it sound like they invented adolescent issues. It will be no surprise that this record will soon be in the hands of every teen that has ever been hurt by love.
MXPX, have not only grown as people, but as musicians as well. We hear them in ‘Before Everything and After’, and notice just how much they have developed into a more rhythmic, melodic and tight group of musicians. They are to be commended for their efforts. From Tom’s introduction to MXPX on February 11th 1995 to Mike, now fully grown from his days as a larakin punker, MXPX are now better for the lifetime friendships they developed. It shows on the album.
Grab a copy while you can, and enjoy the ever developing, always maturing sound of MXPX. See you in the pit.

This album is really good. Mxpx, has made quite a few great albums... this doesn't have quite as hard of a sound... but MXPX has never been hardcore and their fans know that. People say they have sold out... they have really just started to grow up a little, which is not a bad thing. BE&A is easy to sing along with, or just to rock out to. If you don't have it yet, GET IT! Trust me, it is one CD you want in your collection.

I don't know how anyone can disagree with this album. This album is amazing! There are few albums out there that have the sort of sound that keeps you listening through the whole thing. You know what I mean? The only reason why I didn't give this album a 10, is because the first and last tracks aren't really songs. But otherwise, this cd is in my player all day everyday, and has been for the past couple weeks. Don't let anyone tell you different. Go and buy "Before Everything and After"!!!

Mxpx's new album "Before Everything and After" is one of their best in my opinion. When you hear it then listen to some of their other albums you realize that their sound seems more mature and has great substance this time around. From the song "Play it loud" to the lovely song "You're not alone" It's just really great to hear them back again in full gear. Even if you don't like them or think they're just a bunch of 'Punk Posers' I'm pretty sure you'll find at least one song you'll like. Even if you don't want to admit it to your friends.

At first I was worried like everyone else that this was going to be the cd, that mxpx was going to sell out. All the other bands are doing it so I figured their time had come too. Then I heard the new disc. I was amazed. mxpx has been making phenomenal records for almost 10 years now and some how they keep managing to out do themselves each time. Every new disc is more amazing than the last. I was impressed with the new razor sharp, cleaner sound and high energy on this cd. The new effects make this album unique but they still have that classic sound that is strictly mxpx. The guys from mxpx have done it, they have stayed the same yet put together an album that has some brand new sounds blended nicely with old flava’ and energy. Mad props.

I've seen some reviews of this album that range to "This is the best MXPX cd ever recorded" to "I hate it"

You, more than likely, will love it or hate it. It may not be as good as some past albums but that, to me, is the band maturing in thier genere, with or without some fan's tastes.

I love this album. The lyrics, albeit a little emo, are amazing. Open the booklet, read them w/ the song.

I think the best songs on the album are as follows...

    Well Adjusted
    Quit your life
    It's all right
    King of Hollywood

    I love it.

MxPx has been around for 10 years and their style of music is continuously changing. They are one of the only bands that can actually keep it together for 10 years and they are still goin! Before Everything & After is a good example of the bands continuous change. It isn't as "edgy" or "loud" as some of their old stuff but it is definately just as good!! so EVERYONE should go buy this album TODAY!!!

    My Score:

I'll admit, this album is a little slower than their earlier years. But the music quality is much better. Instead of plain old common time they mix up the time signatures alot and play in so many different keys. Their old punk stuff, sure it's fast and fun to slam dance to but its all major notes and generic walkups and walkdowns. This album really shows their quality as musicians as well as poets. Buy the album because you like them and their music, don't sell out to the same old fast ga
