I'm the wrong person to be reviewing this record. I have never listened to Give Up The Ghost/American Nightmare/American Nothing/A.N./Canadian Daydream/etc. before. Not a single song. All I know about the band is how badly they've gotten fucked with lawsuits, and how they've had to tour their asses off as an unidentifiable band for well over a year.

I also knew they were a hardcore band. I don't listen to very much hardcore.

So when I put this CD into my stereo time and time again, enjoying it more and more, I became confused. Since when do I like this band? This isn't Rainer Maria! This isn't Mates Of State! THIS ISN'T ON POLYVINYL!@#*)&##%

But We're Down Til We're Underground became the little engine that could over here, always showing up in my stereo at home, or in my car on roadtrips, or even in the Macs I so carelessly used while I was at work. In the thirty-one and a half minutes that this album takes up, I can barely find a second of filler. The clever opening track [complete with acoustic guitar] dupes you into a false sense of security before Wes shouts "1 2 3 4!" and GUTG comes screaming out the gate with "Love American." The album continues at a breakneck pace, with the band's intensity never faltering. The breakdowns are more inventive, the melodic parts are more creative, and the singalongs are more potent than almost every other hardcore band I've ever heard.

I know a lot of GUTG's fans are upset with this album, saying it's not as intense as past efforts. While I've never heard their back catalog, I can say this is plenty intense for me. And while you may say "that doesn't take much," [and you'd probably be right], it's still a damn good album. One of the big surprises of the year for me.

I know there are a lot of people who are naysayers about this album.

Sometimes I wonder if you people listen to the music for music or just for the killer breakdowns.

This is one of, if not THE, most groundbreaking hardcore albums released so far this decade. Maybe if some of you would put your hoods down and stop acting like tough guys for two seconds you could actually hear that.

"[which at one point almost caused the break-up of the band]."

It sped it along quite well, though.
If not for the lawsuits, we coul've gotten at least two more records before the breakup.

    My Score:

as far as their history goes when it comes to the name... not too long after the release of 'background music', they were contacted by the lawers of a boy-band currently going by the name american nightmare. it turns out that they had that name first so, wes and the boys had to change the name. not wanting to have to drastically change their moniker, merch, etc. they settled on american nothing< a> [which allowed them to keep the 'a.n.' title and such]. within months of that switch, they were once again contacted by another party and told that said name was also being used... so once again it was back to the drawing board. eventually the name give up the ghost was brought to light for what wes says to be 'no particular reason'. they were just sick of the ongoing drama [which at one point almost caused the break-up of the band]. so this is what you now have.

now onto what i think of the album... it is very impressive. it's true that it isn't as hard hitting or 'catchy' as previous released work, but it's seemingly different path is by no means bad. wes has seemingly lost a bit of his vocal intensity but it works for this. definitely a worthwhile listen.

Am I the only one that found Background Music to be very repetitive? The first few tracks were outstanding, and after that the album ran together. This new album doesn't run together, maintains the same vocal intensity, and has a very original style to it. Great album, great improvement.

    My Score:

I enjoy this album very much, the songs are well written, but for some reason the cd lags a little bit towards the second half. In a way, it's kind of dissapointing, because I was expecting Wes's vocals to be alittle bit more raw, like AN's previous releases. This CD is pretty good and worth buying, but I think thier EP "The Sun Isn't Getting Any Brighter" is thier most impressive representation of who they are.
